Summer Experiences
Yes, summer is about relaxation.
But relaxation is not just about doing
nothing. Relaxation is about escaping
and escaping needs sometimes more
the action than a repetitive routine, be
it a holiday routine. I always thought
that discoveries make things move,
they change your perception. There is
always a risk that the outcome of your
exploration will not be a match for your
higher expectations. Even though it
may not have the exceptional results
you were longing for, still the whole
experience offers you something new.
Yes, sometimes we have to disagree with
the routes dictated by our tourist guide
or by our typical routines. As you enjoy
the sea in the islands, as you sunbathe
or taste the local specialties, take an
unplanned walk, discover some lonely
beaches, listen to new music, discover the
culture beyond the mainstream touristic
suggestions. Even if it doesnt work, in a
magic way you can say that you took a
step further.

This was the year Hollywood rediscovered the power of fairytales serving them in a new shiny
wrapping. The studios realised the magnificent ease by which these archetypical stories speak to
our inner selves.
The island of Kea (or Tzia for the locals) keeps the art of storytelling alive throughout the years
by organizing an annual Folktales Festival. This year on their special 10th year anniversary, the
festival hosts a large number of events, also addressed to the international audience. So if you are
on the island from 26 to 29 of July dont miss it!
The festival opens on July the 26th with the art exhibition The conspiracy of natural elements
with rare material collected since the beginning of the festival, including some of the most
interesting Greek artists of our days (Cultural Centre Stylianos Restis). Also for the opening
night, an assemblage of musicians From the four cardinal points will take us to a magic voyage
with their sounds, accompanied by a collection of stories. Antonio Chincoa (Spain), Bedioui Lamia
(Tunisia), Daniel Gorney (USA), Kristin Groven Holmboe (Norway), Panagiotis Koulelis, Loukia
Konstantatou, Konstantinos Baltazanis, Jiannis Psimadas, (Greece) will create an amazing mosaic
of sounds and stories.
The main program of the festival begins with the Storytelling Circles where everyone is invited
to share a story, adding it to a storytelling maypole. You may also discover different forms of
expression of the storytelling procedure: Stories on the Beach (27/7 from 20.00), or a more cinematic storytelling like Odyssey, Book 24: The land of the dead, The field,
peace at the Grove theatre (28/7). On the 29th of July, the program continues with a tribute to Brothers Grimm, starting with a photographic exhibition and at 20.15 at St.
George Birgit Lehner will introduce you to folk variants and songs of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, some truly grim tales with a blend of comic and tragic elements
(English and German).
And above all dont miss the closing ceremony and the 10 year celebration, full of music. Dance, wine and snacks at Vourkari (Kinder garden) at 22.30. Also don t miss
the painting exhibition Like a Fairytale with various artists from 7 to 31st of July at Vourkari (Gallery Art s.a.). So even if you are not around during the days of the festival,
