2)Interproximal spaces formed by proximal surfaces in contact

Interproximal spaces are created due to :-

1)contacts of the proximal surfaces 2)narrow at the cervix mesiodistally from the facial and lingual aspect . Under normal and healthy condition ,these spaces are filled with gingival tissue.

INTERPROXIMAL SPACES BETWEEN THE ANTERIOR TEETH

-Long four sided pyramidal in shape.

-Base of the pyramid is the alveolar process -apex of triangle is apical to contact area

INTERPROXIMAL SPACES BETWEEN THE POSTERIOR TEETH -Shape of a tent (due to wide contact areas buccolingually) -Base of the tent = alveolar process -Top=apical to contact area
Form and size of the interproximal spaces varies with -the form of teeth in contact -relative position of contact area (example = narrow teeth at cervices give wide interproximal space)

IMPORTANCE OF THE INTERPROXIMAL SPACES

1. Prevents the accumulation of food around the teeth . -This is because the interproximal spaces is filled with gingival tissue . - this gingival tissue with their attachment epithelium will give protection from invasion of bacteria 2. Allow sufficient bone between teeth -that give support and stability of teeth -give nutritional supply -and innervations of the teeth and periodontium.
