When multiplying out (x + h)^3 or (x + h)^4, use Pascals triangle and the Binomial Theorem rather than repeated foiling. If youre not sure how to do this let me know.

Full statement of the Power rule. If n is a rational number then f(x)=x^n is differentiable and f(x)=nx^(n-1). Thats the statement from your book; we can expand this theorem to n being any real number, so our examples and problems will reect that fact.

The proofs are simple and in the book. What is important about these rules is their usage. We present a number of examples on the next slide.

As a result of these rules we can differentiate any polynomial or power function.

We will move to trigonometric functions in the next presentation.
