Birdie Buddies

Briefing for volunteers

Introduction

Community Advocates (CA) is a CCA which advocates for social issues through meaningful projects
As such, CA is collaborating with MINDS for Birdie Buddies to create an opportunity for you!

Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS)


MINDS caters to children of IQ 50 and below, and who are independent walkers

Timeline

Structure

15 volunteers will buddy 15 MINDS kids (1-to-1 interaction) 1 teacher will accompany 3 MINDS kids

Volunteers must always consult the teachers and CA members for any emergencies or decision-makings that do not adhere to the pre-planned programme

Funding

Costs include:
Admission tickets Tram rides Food

Total actual cost: $34.50 Although this is a self-funded project, volunteers only have to pay $15

Suggested Packlist

Money Water bottle (at least 1 litre) Cap/Hat

Personal medication
Poncho Insect repellent (optional)

Behavior

All MINDS kids are different, so, you need to know them better to be able to interact with them accordingly Remember you are like their big brothers/sisters, so, always set a good example

You will be responsible for their safety throughout the trip


Lastly, do not forget to MAKE FRIENDS WITH THEM!

Safety
Follow all instructions from the CA members and MINDS teachers

Stick together as one group as much as possible


Always stay with your buddy, do not let the MINDS children wander off by themselves Always go in pairs to use the washroom, and inform the teachers beforehand No running at all times Keep to one side of the walkway as there will be trams driving past Always inform the teachers and CA members before taking any decision

Post-programme

At the end of the programme, we strongly encourage participants to participate in post-programme evaluation

After the entire programme, volunteers can stay on in the Bird Park and have fun!
