GRAPHING CIRCLES
PRIMARY STANDARD ADDRESSED (TEKS) 111.33. Algebra II b5 (B): sketch graphs of conic sections to relate simple parameter changes in the equation to corresponding changes in the graph. OBJECTIVE The learner will be able to produce a graph of a circle given an equation or its center and radius or diameter, as well as determine the equation of a circle given its graph or center and radius. MATERIALS NEEDED Pre-Test (check for completing the square graphing linear functions, distance formula) Conic Sections Reference Sheet Activity Sheet

DURATION 1 - 50 Minute Class Periods ANTICIPATORY SET Handout Conic Section Reference sheet and introduce conic sections. Give the students a minute to discuss with elbow partners where circles, ellipses, parabolas, and hyperbolas can be found in nature, architectural design, etc. Then share with the class. VOCABULARY, SKILLS & CONCEPTS Conic Section Circle Ellipse Hyperbola Parabola

DIRECT INSTRUCTION & MODELING A. Introduction: Show how the standard form of a circle is derived from the distance formula.

B. Instruction: Ex. 1: Standard Equation of a Circle with Center at the Origin Ex. 2: Write an equation of a Circle Ex. 3: Standard Form of Equations of Translated Circles Ex. 4: Given the equation what is the center and radius? Ex. 5 Rewrite the equation of the circle in standard form with center (h, k) Ex. 6 Rewrite the equation of the circle in standard form with center (h, k) via completing the square C. Modications and Accommodations (as needed): Specic modications and accommodations provided in the students IEP. Extra wait time between asking questions and calling on a student for the answer.

Frequent, short conferences with the student to check for comprehension Assignments will be broken into segments of shorter tasks Make a positive, personal comment every time the student shows any evidence of interest Use physical proximity to help student focus Use manipulative, hands-on activities whenever possible Provide copies of notes Reduce the amount of copying from text and board Assign a peer helper to check understanding of directions

GUIDED PRACTICE AND MONITORING Graphing Circles Activity Sheet - Complete 1 problem from each section as a class

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE With an elbow partner complete the Graphing Circles Activity Sheet.

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING & ASSESSMENT During Instruction/Guided Practice: Calling on students with Popsicle Sticks - If student says I dont know The teacher will say Im going to call on someone else and then come back to you for the next one and keep asking them until they give an answer. The teacher will also check for signaled answers by keeping an eye on the students eyes After answering, students will be asked Explain how you got that. During Independent Practice: The teacher will monitor individual students/groups and ask questions Assessments: Pre-Test: Given during the week prior to beginning this lesson. Activity Sheets and Quiz CLOSURE Exit Slip: (on a piece of paper) Complete the Square to nd the equation of the circle in graphing form and then graph. What is the center? And the Radius?

x + y -- 10x -- 6y + 18 = 0
