The Sinking of the Titanic When you think of the Titanic, you probably think of the love story

between Jack Dawson and Rose Dewittbekator, but what the Titanic really is, is a British passenger ship weighing in at 63,000 tons and 882 feet long. The Titanic was said to be the biggest and most luxurious ship of its time, next to its two sister ships named Olympic and Brittitanic. Olympic and Brittitanic were built and owned by the same company as Titanic, The White Star Line. There was another ship named the Lusitania. That ship was built by another company named Cunard Liners. The Lusitania made its voyage from New York to Plymouth in 5 days and 17 hours because of its miraculous speed. So the Titanic wanted to be the headlines of the newspaper by making its voyage to New York from England in less time than Lusitania. The Titanic ended up having unsinkable features including a double bottom, watertight subdivisions and built of iron. Many people did believe that Titanic was unsinkable because of its 16 watertight compartments. Even if two compartments filled up, Titanic could still stay afloat. Titanic left its docks on April 10th 1912, but the night that tragedy struck was the late night of April 14th 1912. A North Atlantic iceberg sideswiped Titanic and made many scratches, holes, dents, and scrapes. The collision happened below the water line and that made sea water all rush in. The crew aboard sent out distress signals and raged to see how much damage was made, but it was too late. The Iceberg had already filled up five watertight compartments in less than 10 minutes. The lifeboats on the Titanic were only enough for about half of the passengers. It took about 2 hours for the whole ship to sink and around the last 20 minute mark the vessel broke in half.
