A Quick Guide To Patient Empowerment

Before seeing your doctor, ask yourself these questions and share your answers with your doctor: What are my symptoms? What medicines am I currently taking (include prescription and over -the- counter medicines, vitamins, and supplements)? What chronic conditions do I have? What other concerns or questions do I have? When did the symptoms start to manifest? What drugs am I allergic to? What are my religious/cultural beliefs that may affect my choice or refusal to undergo certain medical treatment(s)/procedure(s)?

Ask your doctor at every appointment: What is my main health concern? What do I need to do and why is it important to do that? What lifestyle changes should I consider to improve my health? Ask your doctor about any prescribed medicine: Is there an over -the -counter medicine that I could try first? If the medicine is branded, what is the generic name? When, how often, how much and how long should I take this medicine? Should I take this medicine with food or even with an empty stomach? What should I do if I miss my dose? How will other drugs (including herbs and supplements) affect me while I am taking this medicine? Are there any restrictions on activities while I am taking this medicine? What is the cheapest preparation (branded or generic) available in the market? If your doctor recommends treatment or surgery, ask: What is my diagnosis? What are the risks and benefits of this treatment or surgery? What are the likely outcomes? How will this treatment or surgery improve my

condition? What is the cost of undergoing this surgery? What are my alternatives? What are the benefits and risks involved in each of the alternatives? The likely outcome of this alternative? How long will it take for me to recover? What complications, pain or side effects might I have? Which doctors, hospitals or surgery centers are qualified and experienced in this treatment or procedure? What happens if I dont treat my condition right now? If I choose to get a second opinion, whom should I see?

If you are a PhilHealth member, ask: Am I going to be admitted? Is the hospital where I will be admitted accredited by PhilHealth? Is my attending physician/s accredited by PhilHealth? Will I require an operation? Is the procedure covered by PhilHealth? How much is the professional fee/s of doctors? How much is my PhilHealth benefit? How much will I pay the doctor/hospital after my PhilHealth benefits are deducted? Are the drugs prescribed/ordered by the doctor included in the Philippine National Drug Formulary (or reimbursable by PhilHealth)?
