Joe Higgins logic
Dear Editor: I, too, was struck by your article on miracles but my reaction was slightly different than Joe Higgins. I was applauding the boldness of even discussing and sharing someones reaction to a miracle. I, too, have had miracles in my lifethe birth of my son is just one such miracle. While I will not take ink space to refute the idea of Jesus and Mary as mythological characters, I will say, Mr. Higgins, you sound angry and hurt; and more emotional than rational. Believers and non-believers in Jesus will continue to have disagreements but as a believer, the second greatest tenet in my faith is to love my neighbor as myself. I pray(ed) for you Mr. Higgins that you will experience Gods love and care and, possibly, some amazing/crazy miracle! We know that God is love even though we cant taste, touch or always test this love.

recover from the fiscal crisis that has left education shamefully underfunded in our state. Once first in the nation in per-pupil funding, California is now ranked 49th. It is important to remember that any school system, no matter how distinguished, is only as good as its teachers and budget reductions should not be resolved at the expense of our children. Claremont citizens have always placed a high priority on intellectual development and social awareness. Lets continue to support CFA and CUSD in their effort to work together to uphold those things that make Claremont the wonderful place that it is. Lets support efforts to keep teachers in the classroom so that our community can continue to thrive and soar above adversity.

Supporting our teachers

Dear Editor: After an especially difficult year for all concerned, I would like to praise the Claremont Faculty Association and the CUSD bargaining teams for reaching an agreement that protects instructional days and keeps teachers in the classroom. In the current political climate, teachers are unfairly blamed for the problems in public education, and I want to offer my thanks to Claremont teachers for making a substantial sacrifice for our children. Unlike many faculty associations that have agreed to cuts that impact students such as furlough days and teacher layoffs, Claremont teachers voted to increase their health benefits contribution by $1500 per year in order to keep teachers in the classroom and protect instructional days. We should never lose sight of the fact that an excellent public school system is one of the most significant attributes of a strong community, making it a good place to live and raise children. We must protect our schools in order to preserve our city for present and future generations. It is our responsibility to support our teachers. Labor unions, like the CFA, were borne out of a need to protect employees from exploitation, and are as necessary now as ever. It will undoubtedly take many years to

Retirement savings advances

Dear Editor: Governor Arnold Schwarzeneggers proposal to impose a fee on skilled nursing beds in multi-level retirement communities has passed the Budget Conference Committee in the California legislature.

This fee is a de facto tax on the retirement savings of retirement community residents; many living in Claremont area facilities. The Governor proposes adding $11.16/bed/day to the bill of nursing home residents who pay out-of-pocket for their nursing home care. We can still prevail in this debate, but we have a lot of work to do to persuade Sacramento that taxing seniors is not the solution to the states budget problems. The issue is now in the hands of the socalled Big Five who largely determine the fate of California budget proposals.Three are on record in favor of the new fee: Governor Schwarzenegger; State Senate President Pro Tem Darryl Steinberg, D-Sacramento; and Speaker of the Assembly John Perez, D-Los Angeles. The 2 Republican leaders in the Big FiveAssemblyman Jim Nielson, RBiggs, and Senator Bob Dutton, R-Inland Empirehave come out against the fee. In addition, 2 senators, Lois Wolk, D-Davis, and Alex Padilla, D-Pacoima, have written to the governor asking him to revise his proposal to make it fair to MLRC residents. Slowly but surely, elderly residents and their families are beginning to understand how pernicious the Governors proposal is. In any event, the issue is still alive, and the urgency of its defeat is still as important as ever. Write or call your state Assembly person and Senator urging them to oppose this tax.

Tragic accident takes life of longtime Claremonter

atherine Shelton, a well known Claremont real estate agent and friend to many in the community, was tragically killed in a traffic accident on Wednesday morning on First Street in Village West.
Some questions remain unanswered about the nature of the accident that caused her death. The Traffic Division of the Claremont Police Department is currently conducting an investigation. Around 10:40 a.m., several 911 calls came into the Claremont Police Department about a traffic collision in the area. When police arrived, they found Ms. Shelton, who was badly injured, and a crahsed vehicle nearby. Paramedics rushed Ms. Shelton, 42, to Pomona Valley Medical Center, but she did not survive her injuries. She was pronounced dead at 11:20 a.m. The motorist involved in the accident, Brenda Monahan of Claremont, was one of Ms. Sheltons closest friends and roommate. They were attached at the hip, said Chas Seward, Ms. Monahans boyfriend. Shes been living with us for the past 4 months. During that time their relationship grew even stronger. She was like a sister to us. Witnesses on Wednesday afternoon said Ms. Monahan was hysterical after the accident and during her interview with police. Mr. Seward said she is completely devastated and will be seeking counseling. Were just trying to take it one day at a time, he said. Many of the details about how the accident occurred are still under investigation, Claremont Police Lieutenant Shelly Vander Veen said. Ms. Monahan was interviewed by police at the scene and later released. Lt. Vander Veen and Mr. Seward described the sequence of events that led to the tragedy. The friends headed to Village West in Mr. Sewards vehicle, a black Infiniti QX4. Ms. Monahan was driving with Ms. Shelton in the passenger seat. Ms. Monahan is the owner of boutique gift shop Three

French Hens. The store is scheduled to re-open in the coming weeks at a city-owned location at 456 W. First Street. Ms. Monahan pulled the vehicle into a parking spot just in front of the location and was planning to do some work at the store. Ms. Shelton was going to borrow the car for the day, Mr. Seward said. Ms. Shelton got out of the passenger seat and walked around the vehicle toward the driver seat. As she passed in front of the vehicle, the car accelerated forward. Tire marks along First Street show the vehicle continued to travel eastbound on the sidewalk. The vehicle knocked over 2 light poles and a bench, finally crashing near the entrance to Bua Thai Cuisine about 90 feet away. No other pedestrians were on the sidewalk at the time. Ms. Monahan sustained minor injuries during the ordeal, but was not transported to the hospital. Police continue to investigate what caused the car to accelerate forward. Were unsure how the vehicle got into drive, Lt. Vander Veen said. But we believe nobody was in control of the car at the time [of the collision]. She added that there was no indication that Ms. Monahan was under the influence of alcohol or drugs and that she voluntarily submitted to a blood test at the scene. A resident of Claremont for 13 years, Ms. Shelton touched many lives through her community involvement. She was a former member of the Disaster Response Team of the local chapter of the American Red Cross. As a mother of a 19-year-old son, she served as a board member of Claremont schools PFA. She was also very active in the business community. She worked as a real estate agent for Coldwell Banker Town & Country and was an active member of the Claremont Chamber of Commerce. Those close to her describe Ms. Shelton as a warm and caring woman who had many circles of friends in the community. She was an all around beautiful person and someone genuinely concerned about the wellbeing of others, said friend Mick Bollinger. I believe shes one of the greatest losses to this community for as long as Ive been here. Over the past few years, Ms. Shelton rallied together a group of friends that socialized at local restaurants and bars each Thursday night, calling themselves The Thursday night crew. She put a whole group of friends together, explained friend Mark Bollinger. She was the glue to that group

and catalyst for everything that we did. She will really be missed by all of us. Ms. Monahan is also active in the business community. The former Chamber of Commerce board member was set to become the citys business concierge under a recently signed lease agreement with the city. In the role, Ms. Monahans shop would double as a Visitors Center for those seeking out business information in Claremont during Chamber of Commerce off-hours. Everything was starting to fall into place, Mr. Seward said. Catherine was doing well in her business and putting some deals together. Brendas store was about to open at the new location. And then this. Its the worst possible scenario. He added that the community and Ms. Monahans friends have offered a tremendous amount of support during this difficult time. We really appreciate that, he said. A candlelight vigil was held for Ms. Shelton on Wednesday evening, and flowers have been placed at the scene of the accident. The COURIER has not received formal notification regarding memorial services.

Itemized project list released for CUSD bond measure

measure cl

more detailed project list for the upcoming $95 million Measure CL bond measure was approved on Thursday by the Committee to Support Claremont Schools.
The current plan for the $95 million bond is to apply the funds in 4 main categories: repair and modernization ($48,412,886), technology ($22,189,862), sustainability ($14,395,562) and debt elimination ($10,000,000). The numbers are approximate figures representing an ongoing plan of spending. The money from the bond measure doesnt all come to us at one time, said Bill Fox, a member of the Committee to Support Claremont Schools. It happens in chunks over a 15-year period and they have to be spaced out. A resolution to place the bond measure on the November 2nd ballot was passed by the Claremont Unified School District board on July 22nd by a 4-1 vote. Board member Steven Llanusa opposed the vote because he did not believe enough of the community had expressed their views to the board regarding the bond. Under the technology category, all CUSD K-12 schools are slated for a technology upgrade indicated by 3 phases. The specific items include teacher and student laptops, wireless access, mobile laptop carts and technologically enhanced libraries. Claremont High School will also receive science room upgrades. With technology, were setting it up in the form of an endowment over 15 years where every few years, money will be spent for upgrades and improvements, Mr. Fox explained. Technology becomes obsolete in a few years. For the first phase, we want to immediately touch every student with technology and want every teacher district-wide to have a laptop. The other phases will be more for improving infrastructure. Some of the items in the repair and modernization category include CHS theater and music classroom

modernization, replacement of more than 40 portables throughout the district, new playground equipment for all elementary schools and El Roble Intermediate School, and roof and plumbing replacement. CHS and El Roble will receive physical education field and facility upgrades as well as new solar heating systems for their swimming pools. According to Mr. Fox, the CHS theater is a key focus for the repair and modernization category. The $48.9 million Measure Y bond measure project list also included plans to renovate the theater 10 years ago but the project did not materialize. We have money allocated for the theater that allows us to fully modernize it and match the $1.5 million grant from the state, Mr. Fox said. That means things such as new sound and lighting systems, more storage space and an air-conditioned lobby. The sustainability category includes window and door replacement, upgrading heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems to be more energy efficient, the installation of solar panels wherever cost effective, exterior lighting at CHS and an irrigation central control system at all of the districts K-12 schools. Window and door replacements for all CUSD elementary schools were also included on the Measure Y

project list. Mr. Fox said the while Measure Y funds were used to do some of the work, Measure CL would help complete the projects. Vista [Elementary School] was the only school to have their rooms fully modernized under Measure Y, Mr. Fox said. You may see checks by schools that still need work done [even after Measure Y] but it doesnt mean that the Measure Y money wasnt spent. It means that there is still work to be done. We have a lot of the doors done but with window repairs, we still have a lot of work to do. Theres about 125,000 square feet of windows that still need to be completed throughout the district. Ten million dollars will go towards eradicating an estimated $1 million in annual lease and debt interest payments and free up classroom funding. The elimination of the debt will allow more money to be available in the districts general fund. Estimates for individual items on the project list were unavailable. Mr. Fox said the estimates for each section were based on looking at the needs of the Claremont schools. A estimate of each item would be done after the bond has passed, he pointed out. There would need to be architects and project managers that would have to be hired by the district to come out. That is a very costly step and the district would have to use part of the bond money to do that. According to the district document containing the bond measure resolution, the projects on the list will be completed as needed. It also points out that the final cost of each project will be determined as plans and construction documents are finalized, construction bids are received, construction contracts are awarded and projects are completed. A disclaimer indicates that some of the projects on the list may not be completed or may be delayed due to the final costs.

Incoming freshmen get a taste of CHS life

COURIER photos/Steven Felschundneff A group of new freshmen tour Claremont High School during freshman orientation on Wednesday. The incoming class was divided up into small groups that were shown around by upper class members called CHS Fresh Start Mentors.

ore than a hundred freshmen will be more than ready when school begins at Claremont High School next Tuesday.
The incoming 9th graders became more familiar with their campus while meeting other students and learning the ropes from older students during a 2-hour orientation at CHS on Wednesday night. I think overall this helps them and we want them to be more comfortable here, said Ruth Ojeda, CHS Wolfgang advisor and one of the main organizers of the orientation. Sometimes they can feel intimidated when they come here. The first wave of freshmen arrived on the CHS campus at 4:50 p.m. on Wednesday. After going through an arm bridge created by more than 130 mentor volunteers, the freshmen were led into the central quad. CHS senior Devin Brusseau volunteered for the event as a mentor because of the opportunity to get involved when help was needed. I did it last year and Ive also done some volunteer work with the American Red Cross, he explained. I also have incoming freshman friends and I just like being able to help out. Within the next 20 minutes, the 9th graders were split up into groups to take tours of the campus, the Youth Activity Center (YAC) and learn about school decorum. A separate orientation was held for parents in Taylor Hall with CHS Principal Brett OConnor. Freshman Kevin Wang feels more knowledgeable about the campus that could possibly be his home for the next 4 years. Its been pretty cool, he said. We just walked around campus and now I know where all the spots are. Following the tours and information sessions, the CHS band, CHS cheerleaders and CHS Wolfgang hip-hop team performed on the stage near the band room. The freshman class student council was also introduced. The final activity for the orientation was a dance with a live disc jockey in the 500 Quad. The mentors then ac-

companied the students to the parking lot to meet their parents 45 minutes later at 7 p.m. Freshman Rahul Rangnekar used the time during the dance to hang out with his friends. He also saw familiar faces throughout the orientation. This was pretty good, Rahul said. I saw some of my friends during the band performance. The only thing I think it was missing was they didnt tell us about what would need to do for registration. It was definitely still fun though. As a member of CHS Wolfgang, freshman Christin

Rickman played dual roles during this years event. I got to walk around the school [with everyone else] and then I got to perform in front of my peers, she said. While Christin enjoyed the event, she had some suggestions in order to improve orientation for next years class. There needs to be a lot more water, the CHS freshman said. And when we were in the central quad meeting up with our groups, I think that it could have been a little more organized.

The story of a satisfying revisit

by Jan Wheatcroft

kopelos, one of the Greek islands north west of Samos, was the second island I revisited on this trip. Eighteen years ago after spending 2 weeks on its island neighbor, Skyros, I came on a Flying Dolphin boat, a catamaran which rises out of the sea and skims the water very quickly, to the beautiful harbor town of Skopelos.
I love towns which have beautiful, working harbors and fall in love immediately. So I stayed for 2 weeks. I met a wonderful family there and over the years I stayed in the Grandmothers house when I visited and they all (5 of them) came to Claremont and stayed 2 months with me one winter. You can be sure that Grandma cooked great Greek meals. Skopelos has no airport and no direct transportation from Athens. One has the choice of flying to its other neighbor, Skiathos, and then take a boat from there (very expensive now) or, as most islanders do, take a bus from Athens to the port of Agios Konstantinos about three hours away, and then wait for a ferry to Skopelos, which took us one long and tiring day. My theory is that the people of Skopelos are not anxious to have their beautiful island flooded with tourism and powered by the greed of fast money. They want to preserve what is precious and special about their island and so they welcome visitors but dont provide them that easy access which increases the number of tourists. When I first visited I loved the harbor which was filled with fishing boats, yachts and ferries. Today a newer ferry harbor has been built toward the center of the harbor which remains empty most of the day and is rather unobtrusive. Small shops, restaurants and hotels still ring the harbor. The quality and variety of craft is quite high and many of the shops are still owned by the same people they were 18 years ago. I remembered them, and they remembered me. Some became friends. The tavernas and restaurants are not crowded together. Some have fancy chairs but many still have the small tables and stiff wooden chairs of old. When business is quiet, the shopowners still sit outside in a neighboring caf chatting and drinking coffee while keeping an eye on their shop. They jump up when patrons enter and scuttle back to the caf table when the shop empties. Neighboring shops and businesses keep an eye out for each other as well. It was all part of a sort of non competitiveness I noticed. Skopelos was the main island where the movie Mamma Mia was filmed. I was worried about revisiting it thinking that the aftermath of that experience would produce great changes in crowds, building and the texture of the town. Everyone told me about the pleasure of that experience and how gracious the film stars and the crew were. It was surprising to see only a natural increase which would have occurred in any case over a period of 10 years, the time when I had last visited. Even the tiny hotel where I had always wanted to stay was no different than it had been when I stayed this time. It was small, clean, and very rustic with a lovely patio overflowing with trees and flowers. Grandma still lived in the same house and cooked us a meal of my choosing which tasted just as I remembered it. Delicious! The family took us on a drive through the countryside which had changed little. A few more houses perhaps, and an area where there had been a large fire destroying many acres of pine trees but mostly remaining green and forested overall. We came to the small village of Agnondas where there are a few small hotels and a tiny, secluded harbor for fishing boats and where the ferries can come if the weather is very bad. There are still only 2 tavernas overlooking the water and the food is as wonderful as I had remembered it. Fresh caught fish, fresh garden tomatoes and homemade food. And such a lovely view as the sun went down and cruise ships passed in the distance. I have always found that the Skopelites are quite a thoughtful and intellectual bunch, and they are very active in their local government. They seemed to have worked very hard to preserve the old ways of life of

Skopelos while encouraging positive changes to be made slowly. Whatever they have done, it has worked. The atmosphere was relaxed. It was as if the island lived its life and welcomed tourists to visit them but not to change them. They are satisfied with what is. In my eyes they have saved themselves. We took a ferry from Skopelos to Volos and then caught a bus to Kalambaka to visit the Monasteries of Meteora. We stayed in the village of Kastraki which when I visited 18 years ago comprised just a few houses. Meteora is almost indescribable. It is made up of peaks which rise into the air like spindles with at least nine old monasteries and nunneries perched on top of each of them. From the bottom looking up it seems impossible that anyone could get up to the top of one of these pinnacles much less build a huge building there. Most of them were built by monks hauling materials and themselves up in baskets with pulleys. Now, there are roads and bridges and winding staircases to enter. The views are fantastic and places to stop and clammer about on rock outcroppings are numerous with great vistas. I loved it 18 years ago and I loved it on this trip. Sure there were changes, but not nasty ones. The tiny village below had grown, but was tasteful; the larger city looked like any Greek city. My only complaint was that the tour buses came and were lined up and the stream of tourists blocked the interior views, the chapels, the gardens and made the enjoyment of the place less. But, hey, I was a tourist, too and even though I would prefer to be alone at these sites to enjoy them at my leisure and in silence, I knew that in reality it wasnt possible. So when it was unpleasant, we got out quickly and when it was fairly empty we roamed about exploring the monastery. This was the second revisit which I found enjoyable and not disappointing. All things change and nothing stays the same. We can make choices about what we want the changes to be, and can choose to leave when we dont like what is happening. Of course, even I have changed. And often my memories get mixed up and remade like an old film. When the changes fall into the not so pleasant category, then I feel sad. So my visit to Greece had its positive aspects and those which were not so positive. Overall it was all worthwhile. Greece always beckons to me like a long finger drawing me back. I will heed that fingers call and return although perhaps to new, yet unvisited islands.

Im open-minded. Protestant, Mormon, Muslim, Catholic, Buddhist.

[Editors note: The following letter was sent to the Claremont City Council with a copy forwarded for publication. KD]

El Roble crosswalk
Dear Councilmembers: Earlier this summer, council considered the possibility of placing a crosswalk on Mountain Avenue between Foothill and El Roble. The Traffic and Transportation Commission had already turned in a negative report on the crosswalk so the invitation for public participation was pretty hopeless. I read the commissions report online and was certainly not surprised by their reasoning. The crosswalk would be contrary to their crosswalk policy based on research. Of course, in their typically unprofessional manner, the commission report included no references to actual research. I am confident, in fact, that they continue to depend upon the ridiculously flawed research done at Chico State, years ago, that brought about this war against crosswalks. If the citys engineer and the commission would only update their reading they might find that things have changed in the last 20 years! The bottom line in all of this discussion of pedestrian safety, in my opinion, is that cities that care enough to provide for pedestrian safety and to develop a culture of pedestrian access DO in fact succeed. The key is that they have to think beyond mere crosswalks, something that our city engineer seems incapable of doing. The early research directed attention only to crosswalks and mid-block passages. It never bothered with a host of devices that could be used in addition to crosswalks.

readers comments
New research that I have read makes it clear that research results can change dramatically when a city uses its imagination beyond just painting crosswalks. This summer has been a great learning experience for my wife and me. We have seen communities in California, Washington, and British Columbia where pedestrian access is taken seriously and where safety records are high. Perhaps the city engineer and the commission should be offered the chance to do some traveling of their own. Just one example. We spent a day in Sonora, California. The main street in town is Hwy 49. There are numerous crosswalks. All you have to do is look in the direction of a crosswalk and traffic comes to a stop! There arent even any extra gadgets; yet somehow the culture of pedestrian access has been successfully implanted. Please tell me why a forward-looking city like Claremont cant do something better than just rest its hind end on 20year-old fallacious research. I would love to hear the answer.

Ways to cut spending

Dear Editor: Government in America has become too expensive. To wit: deficit spending at the federal level and budget shortfalls at the state and local levels. Republicans think government is

spending too much and taxing too much. Democrats think more government is good even if it means more taxes. There is a stalemate between the 2 camps and the normal reaction is to blame each other. No more blame game! There are ways to cut government spending while still meeting the needs of all citizens. What is needed is some chutzpah! Eliminate the police and let all citizens arm themselves. After all the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution gives citizens the right to defend themselves. No need for police departments! Restructure the military for defensive purposes only. No interventions abroad for nation-building or strategic and offensive activities! Eliminate public schools so that all children are home-schooled, if not in private schools! No bail out of mismanaged corporations. Let them fail; it is cheaper that way! Get rid of Social Security. It is too costly and socialistic. Family members can take care of each other better. It is a family values thing. If one has no family members, their church, synagogue or mosque and other charity organizations should take care of them. Money that government does not take away from the people for Social Security will be abundantly available to the families and charity organizations to take care of the seniors and others with special social needs! No public mass transportation facilities. This is America. Everyone must have a

right to privately owned automobiles. It is one way of keeping families together in their own extended private space! Stop government subsidies to farmers. Most farms are now owned by big corporations anywaythey can afford it on their own. They are too big to fail! Stop government subsidies to small businesses. Granting such incentives interferes with the free enterprise system, and it is socialistic! Do not spend any money on research. What we do not know cannot hurt us! Do not spend money on space exploration. Look at what space exploration has contributed tothe Internet with too much information to cope with! Unemployment benefits? They cost too much. Let the unemployed find jobs. Giving them free money makes them lazy, and that is un-American. Instead, give more tax breaks to the rich so they can employ the unemployed and foster increased government revenues! Make fewer laws because too many regulations require regulators who cost too much and take away our freedoms! Obviously some of these are drastic proposals. How would you do it? And tell your elected officials.

he term Hell Week in football can inspire images of players bent over a trashcan, heavy breathing and exhaustion. But the Claremont High School football team viewed Hell Week as a golden opportunity.

usually because there are 2 practices in one day. Were allowed to get 25 practices in before the first game and every day that our kids are not in school, it counts as 2 practices on those days [during the week]. According to Coach Collins, the challenge for coaches is to properly prepare their players while avoiding injury when conducting practices leading to the beginning of the season. Coaches have to get their teams prepared within those times without hurting their players bodies, he explained. All

the time we have is needed in order to teach them the things they need to know. So we have had light practices in the morning without having full pads on but the implementation comes in the evening practices. We do our heavier running and conditioning at night. Both the morning and evening practices were approximately 2 hours each. The team endured the increasing temperatures from 90 to 100 degrees this week in order to complete its Hell Week. tices were more difficult when Hell Week first began. The first week was a lot harder because we were running a lot to get in shape, Manus said. This [past] week was easier and we worked on getting in shape to start scrimmaging. Were ready to make a mark this year and if we play hard, well have a really good team. This year, I feel well do really good. This season will be Claremonts first in the restructured Sierra League. The Pack will be one of 3 newcomers into the league with Charter Oak and South Hills being the other schools. Ayala, Chino Hills and Damien round out the rest of the league. Senior receiver Tanner Kuramata looks forward to the

different competition his team will encounter in the Sierra League this year. Im excited to play against new teams and to have the chance to get out there and show the other teams what we have to offer, he said. Its been a while since the season and Im loving getting back into it. Its time to do it. The Wolfpack will host Cajon at home this Friday at 7 p.m. The stadium will feature more seating this year on the home team side with extra levels of bleachers added during the summer. Claremont will not begin Sierra League play until October 15th against Chino Hills at home. The homecoming game will take place 2 weeks later against Ayala.

CHS defensive standout Brandon Tuliaupupu believes experience will play a factor in his teams success this season. I think were going to have a good season this year because we have a lot of returning offensive players and defensive players, Tuliaupupu said. Tuliaupupu, Kuramata, Manus, Daniel Kessler and Darius Andres represent a sample of the returning players to CHS this year. The Wolfpack also landed former Pomona High School running back Taj Teague as a transfer. Teague, currently injured, rushed for 802 yards last year on just 81 carries. Like his players, Coach Collins is also optimistic about the upcoming season. Last year, I was very happy with our team. We played aggressively and our offense was prolific, he said. And we have quite a few of those seeds back this year. I think this year its exciting to be in the Sierra League and for football, I think it is almost as strong as the Baseline League. Charter Oak and South Hills have definitely made the Sierra League stronger than it was.

A passion for jazz

is walls are hidden behind performance photos, album covers and pictures of Louis Armstrong. A piano sits in a raised area in the corner and other instruments are scattered around the room.
Chet Jaegers living room tells the story of a man whose passion for jazz spans many decades. His north Claremont home serves as homage to jazz music and a practice studio for his band, The Night Blooming Jazzmen. Since it was formed in 1975, Mr. Jaeger has been the one constant in the band, which is set to perform at the Claremont Monday Night Concert Series on August 30. At 85 years old, Mr. Jaeger is the only surviving member of the original 7 who got the group together 35 years ago. These guys are a bunch of kids, he said, referring to newer band members like trombonist Dick Doner, 74, and string bass player Don Richardson, 75. Despite his age, those who know him best say Mr. Jaeger hasnt missed a beat. Playing-wise, hes just as good as he was 30 years ago, if not better, said Mr. Doner, who joined the band in 1978. Mr. Jaeger has been playing the cornet, similar to a trumpet, for over 70 years. He described how he first came across the instrument at an early age. My parents put me in piano lessons and it was a total failure, Mr. Jaeger said. They figured Id do better with a trumpet since it only has 3 buttons. I loved it from the start. As he began to fall in love with the music as a teenager, he would sneak into jazz clubs in Los Angeles. His passion for the music only grew with each performance he saw. The Night Blooming Jazzmens music is known as Dixieland jazz or traditional jazz but the group also plays swing, marching band and Latin rhythm, depending on the crowd. During a practice at Mr. Jaegers home on Tuesday, band members showed their versatility. Saxophonist Jim Richardson

played both the alto and tenor sax at the same time. Pianist Les Deutsch plays the tuba, sax and piccolo while Mr. Richardson can also play the banjo and guitar. Their love of music has given them the opportunity to travel around the world to perform. The Night Bloomington Jazzman has played in Europe, Asia, South America and in 24 states across the country. It must be fun because were not getting rich, Mr. Jaeger said. But we certainly do enjoy it. You meet a lot of nice people at jazz festivals and you get to sit in with other bands. Theyve also recorded 24 albums and several DVDs. The group has beefed up its practice schedule ahead of a studio recording session planned for next month. All their recordings are sold at performances and on their website at www.nightbloomingjazzmen.com. Mr. Jaeger said he knows his time to perform is limited, but hopes to keep on playing as long as possible. God has been good to me to let me play this long, he said. There arent many people on the circuit at my age. But Ill keep going as long as I can, 2 or 3 more years, maybe even 5. The Night Blooming Jazzman will perform on Monday night at Memorial park beginning at 7 p.m. The following week will be the final performance in the Monday Night Concert Series featuring classic rock band The Answer.

Claremonters attend National Scout Jamboree

At the 2010 National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia there were over 48,000 Scouts in the arena and there were cases of bottled water that ran across from one side to the other. Out of the 48,000 Scouts, there were two representing the city of Claremont, Jacob Babineau and Joshua Cross. It is great to be at this amazing event to celebrate the Centennial year of Scouting in America and to represent Claremont Jacob said. We were pleased when Burton Roberts and Alex Boylan showed up from the popular TV shows Survivor and The Amazing Race. The show began with and F16 flyover and a speech from the Secretary of Defense of the United States, Robert Gates, who earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1958. He said: I speak to you as leaders of one generation speaking to the future leaders of another generation. For most of you, your Scouting experience is the first step to becoming men. Mr. Gates also said that Scouting thrusts boys into the wilderness to prove themselves and to learn about the power of the soul. Im an Eagle Scout from 2009, and I thought that it was a very impressive speech and very well executed. Riding in on a M1126 Stryker Infantry Carrying Vehicle, the 2 millionth Eagle Scout Anthony Thomas, of Burnsville, Minnesota, welcomed participants to the greatest Scouting event of the century. Following a rousing cheer, 860 Scouts carrying American flags representing the 860 Jamboree troops lined the aisles to the front of the arena in the Parade of Flags. Others appearing as part of the arena program included Miss America Caressa Cameron, Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca and Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell. Mr. Mazzuca urged everyone to have an exciting, safe and adventurous Jamboree. He led a large Scouting applause to thank the military for their service to the Jamboree. Mr. McDonnell presented a state proclamation wishing the Boy Scouts of America a happy 100th birthday. Other appearances that added to the patriotic event were National Order of the Arrow Chief Brad Lichota, who led the Scout Oath, and the U.S. Air Force Drill Team which demonstrated precision as the 16-man team hurled rifles with fixed bayonets and created spinning gantlets of bayonets. Broadway performer Natalie Weiss, who opened the show with the National Anthem, joined the Jamboree Band and U.S. Army Herald Trumpets to close the show as flags waved and the artillery sounded. As Scouts filed from the arena, a parachutist with an American flag dropped through the air, declared the worlds largest flag jump. The Scouts, excited about the fun-filled day ahead of them, made their plans and headed for the activity centers. The Fort is so big and there are so many people here that they had to have four activity centers. Each activity center offers identical program events and activities, including: air-rifle shooting, obstacle courses, archery, biking, buckskin games, shotgun shooting, climbing towers, conservation activities, fishing, mountain boarding, pioneering, and a rappelling tower. Fishing was held at Fishhook Lake where more than 20,000 bass, channel catfish, and bluegills are stocked. I was very pleased to catch a

two pound catfish, which I got to clean, cook, and eat on the spot. Jacob reeled in two prize bass. Along with all of the activities, there is a historical recreation of the first Boy Scout camp, conducted by Robert Baden-Powell in 1907 on Brownsea Island, off the coast of England. It featured demonstrations, games, and activities conducted by Scouts dressed in the costumes of the time. The Jamboree was fun, educational, safe, and very well organized. My thanks to all of the adults that donated their time, knowledge, and skills in making it an event I will never forget. I was very proud to represent Claremont and look forward to helping as an assistant at the next one in 2013.

Art in unexpected places

hirty year Claremont resident, Jim Coffman has been sculpting for over 10 years, specializing in rock sculpture design. Most recently, Mr. Coffman opened Altered Stones, which specializes in custom, solid rock sculptures, where no 2 are the same. Many of Mr. Coffmans rock sculptures can be seen in several yards of Claremont residents including Indian Hill Blvd., 12th Street and on Via Padova Ave in Claraboya. Mr. Coffmans newest ambition is to integrate rock sculptures with water features, which create a soothing and bold centerpiece for any home or garden. Mr. Coffman will be holding sculpting demonstrations at the Millard Sheets Gallery during the LA County Fair this September. To contact Altered Stones, see page 23.
