Fathers

p. 209 Lesson Plan Attention-Getter: Write fathers and circle it in the middle of the chalkboard with chalk. Fathers are so special, they bless our lives by protecting us and teaching us the best way to live. We have many fathers. One is our earthly father. [write earthly father on the upper-left hand side of the chalkboard] and you can draw a line from fathers to earthly fathers. Lead the discussion to include Heavenly Father [write Heavenly Father in the upper-right hand side of the chalkboard, our bishop, the father of our ward [write bishop on the upper-middle portion of the chalkboard], grandfathers, step-fathers, and the father of our country. Write all the others around the word fathers (they will eventually be erased and you want the 3 left on the top to be earthly fathers, bishop and Heavenly Father. We have many fathers. Now listen as I sing [or have them listen to the song on CD] to tell me which of these fathers I am singing about. Erase the others not mentioned, and the word fathers. Then draw 3 vertical lines dividing the chalkboard into 3 sections, one for each verse with the headings of each already written. Teach the chorus using props and randomly selecting children to each come hold a prop. Swap out children each time you sing the chorus with each verse: special badge and a clothes pin: Fathers are so special with a very special love sun glasses: They watch us helmet and knee pads: and protect us flashlight: they guide us Conductor stick or dowel: and direct us Then for back to our home above, helpers can take a step back and look up. Teach verses by gradually adding flip chart pages onto chalkboard in designated sections. Time permitting remove pages as lines are learned.
