Mumps

Mumps is an Acute disease characterized by non-suppurative enlargement of parotid glands Other organs may also be involved

Natural history

Agent Mumps virus Source of infection case of mumps including sub-clinical cases Infective material saliva and respiratory secretions Period of infectivity 16 days before and 13 days after the onset of disease

Natural history

Host factors Mumps is a disease of children and young adults Mode of spread droplet infection Incubation period 2-3 weeks

Clinical features

Main feature is swelling of parotid gland (one side or both sides) Pain on opening the mouth Complications

Pancreatitis, mycarditis, orchitis etc

Prevention

Avoid( )close contact Live attenuated vaccine is available to prevent Mumps In Libya Mumps vaccine is combined() with Measles and Rubella (MMR = Mumps, Measles and Rubella) Two doses are given

First at 12 months Second at 18 months
