Columbia University Medical Center (2010, February 24). Stem cells restore sight in mouse model of retinitis pigmentosa. ScienceDaily.

The main idea of this article is to show how we can decrease the number of blind people in cities all over the world. Retinal pigment epithelium- this is a cell layer just outside the neurosensory retina that nourishes retinal visual cells. Ophthalmology- medical science that deals with the anatomy, etc, of the eye. Article opinion

My opinion on this article is that it was an interesting and informative article. I think so because it included my two favorite subjects: animals and helping people across the world. The content on the article astounded me that finally, something could be done about the people who cant see. In all, I really liked this article because it explained how they were going to spread the cure of blindness to the world, and going by my friends experiences, I hope they do.

Summary This article was about how advanced our technology is today. It shows how we use genetics to cure something that was thought impossible, it is called being blind. The scientists have successfully found a way of transforming stem cells into retinal cells. The first few times, it only restored sight to of the mice, but there were tumors in some of the mice after the procedure so they arent going to let it go public just yet. They decided to put the experiment on pause for a little while longer, just so they can be 100% sure that it works. There are already some clinics that offer a treatment like this but they are only a 30% success rate. By transforming stem cells into retinal cells, the supply of vaccine is unlimited. Dr. Peter Gouras, Dr. Gouras, Dr. Elizabeth J. Robertson, Drs. Goff and Virginia E. Papaioannou, Dr. Victor Chyuan-Sheng Lin, Dr. Takayuki Nagasaki, were some of the doctors who contributed a big part to this huge project. Unfortunately,

Columbia is one of the few places that the experiment can be conducted in.
