POSITIONING

Semi-Fowler's position

Semi-sitting position with head elevated to a 45 angle Used with respiratory or cardiovascular problems. Used for eating.

High-Fowler's position

Sitting position, head raised 90 angle Used for respiratory or cardiovascular problems. Also used for eating.

Dorsal recumbent position

Client lies supine with legs flexed, and rotated outward. Both feet should be flat on the table, knees flexed Used for digital vaginal or rectal exams. Gown is opened in the front.

Sims' position

Semi-prone position Client lies on the side with weight distributed towards the anterior ileum, humerus and clavicle with pillows supporting flexed arms and legs. Examination/treatment of the rectal area & enemas.

Prone position

Client lies face down/on the stomach, head to one side Examination of the spine/back

Lithotomy position

Lies supine with hips flexed, and calves and heels parallel to the floor using stirrups. Used during pap smears and vaginal births Also used for vaginal and rectal examinations and procedures.

Knee-chest/Genupectoral position

Lies prone with buttocks elevated and knees drawn to the chesr Used during rectal exams, proctological exams and occasionally a sigmoidoscopy.

Trendelenburg position

Lies supine with head30-40 degrees lower than the feet Used for syncope, shock, postural drainage, promotion of venous return

Jackknife position

Used for examine of the male urethra. Has to be a special table for this position.
