Orcad Capture CIS PCB Design Steps

By
Net weavers
This is an honest effort to help people who are madly looking for
Ways to create PCB layout of the design created using the Orcad
Capture CIS.
Version used in this guide is Orcad 9.1 for designing the PCB
layout. With this design steps you will able to create the design &
its PCB layout within few minutes.
This document is created using many sources over internet; there
are few peoples who used this document in their project
documentation and also corrected some of the bugs in this
document. So many thanks to these peoples.

Step 1: Click on Start Button and move to -‘Programs-Orcad Release
9.1 and click on Capture CIS’

Step 2: Now, go to ‘File’ menu bar and under ‘New’ click on ‘Project’
i.e ‘File-New-Project’
Step 3: Now in the ‘New Project’ window, Give the File Name,
location and click on ‘Ok’

Step 4: Click on ‘Next’, Project simulation can be taken up later!!

Step 5: Select one by one, all the PCB part symbol libraries and click
on ‘Add’ to include them in your project

Step 6: After this, all the libraries will added to your current project.
Click on ‘Finish’
Step 7: This Schematic page will displayed.

Step 8: Now, in this schematic window go to the ‘Place’ menu bar,

click on ‘Part’ i.e ‘Place -Part’.
Step 9: You will find the ‘Place Part’ window, Type the part name you
need and click on ‘Ok’.

Step 10: For placing every new symbol, go through the same steps i.e
from slide No. 1 to 10 and place all the symbols on the schematic
page.
Step 11: Now, in order to connect the Parts, go to ‘Place’ menu bar
and click on ‘wire’ i.e ‘Place -Wire’. Now with the aid of the mouse,
connect all the parts with wires as desired, to represent a circuit.
Complete all the connections properly with ground connections also.

Step 12: After this, in order to specify the actual device values to all
symbols, go to Menu Bar and click on-‘Edit-Select All’. All the
components in the circuit will be selected, In order to edit the
property of component, go to the Menu bar and click on- ‘Edit-
Properties’.
Step 13: At the left corner below, click on ‘Parts’ to display the value
and Reference of all symbols. Here, we can give a Value and the
corresponding PCB Footprint for all symbols.

Step 14: After closing this window, in the schematic page you will find
all the References and Values of all symbols. Now this circuit is
completed. So save and close this window from -‘File-Close’.
Step 15: When you close that window, this window will open, select
‘PAGE1’

Step 16: For checking errors and warnings, go to Menu bar and click
on Tools- ‘Design Rules Check’. On this ‘DRC’ window, select the
following options only and click on ‘Ok’.
Step 17: The tool will give a detailed report of design rules and will
create a ‘.drc File’.

Step 18: If there are no errors and warnings, close that report and go
to Menu bar and click on-‘Tools-Create Net list’. In this ‘Create Net
list’ window, select the following options only and click on ‘Ok’.
Step 19: The tool will create a ‘.mnl File’ which is must for the PCB
Design.
Step 20: After that, Click on Start Button-‘Programs-Orcad Release
9.1-Layout Plus’.
Step 21: Go to Menu Bar and Click on -‘File-New’.

Step 22: It will need ‘_DEFAULT.TCH’ File.

Step 23: So give it the path and click on ‘Open’.

Step 24: After that it will need ‘.mnl’ File.

Step 25: Open the file, which we have created in ‘Capture’.

Step 26: Give it the Location, File Name and save it wherever you
want.

Step 27: Now the design page will be opened, in which you can find
the footprints of all the components.
Step 28: When a ‘Add component’ window opens, on ‘Footprint’.

Step 29: Select a proper footprint and click on ‘Ok’.

Step 30: For placing every footprint go to menu bar and click on Tool-
Component- ‘Place’ and place all the footprints in this block properly.

Step 31: After this, close the window and go to menu bar and click on
‘Auto-Autoroute-Board’. It will complete the routing and will give you
message as shown:
Step 32: For checking errors and warnings, go to Menu bar and click
on-‘Auto-Design Rules Check’

Step 33: Select all the options for design rules check and click on ‘Ok’.
Step 34: If there are no errors it will give you the ‘No error’ message.
Step 35: After this go to menu Bar and click on-‘Options-Post Process
Settings’.
Step 36: In this window double click on Top Layer.
Step 37: In this window select these options only and click on ‘Ok’.
Step 38: Now double click on Bottom Layer.
Step 39: In this window select the following options only and click on
‘Ok’ and close other windows as well.
Step 40: Now, go to menu bar and click on -‘Auto-Run Post
Processor’.
Step 41: It will create a Gerber Design File with a file extension as
‘.gtd’ file.
Step 42: It will also create a ‘THRUHOLE.tap’ file, which is must for
CNC drilling i.e when PCB is actually being manufactured.
Step 43: When you click on previous window it will give you ‘Post
Processor Report’ then close this window and main program also.
Step 44: After closing all programs, go to Start Button and click on-
‘Programs-OrCAD Release 9.1-Layout Plus’.
Step 45: Go to Menu Bar and click on-‘Tools-Gerb Tool-New’.
Step 46: On this Gerb Tool window go to Menu Bar and click on-‘File-
Open.
Step 47: Give the path of ‘.gtd’ file, wherever it was saved earlier, and
open it.
Step 48: Select these files only .top, .bot, .smt, .smb, .sst files cut the
other files and click on ‘Ok’.
Step 49: Here all layers will be displayed .
Step 50: On right side select red blocks only and click on goggle, then
it will display only Top side of PCB.
Step 51: Put the mouse cursor on above right corner and check a X &
Y direction size of PCB.
Step 52: After that go to Menu Bar and click on-‘File-Export-Post
Script’.
Step 53: In this window, give X & Y Media size, select Fill mode and
click on ‘Browse’.
Step 54: Select a location and give the name of this layer as a file
name. Click on ‘Open’ & ‘Ok’.
Step 55: Repeat the same procedure for yellow, orange, dark blue,
light blue
Step 56: Now close all the windows. These 5 Files are (TOP,
BOTTOM, SMT, SMB, SST) compulsorily needed for the Positive &
Negative Films, which were created as a Post Script Files. With this,
we complete all the procedures of PCB Design.
