Educational Technology Original Contribution Lesa Kay Atkinson June 19, 2013 Original Contribution: STAAR Professional Development Part 1: Presentation Details During the 2011-2012 school year, my state implemented a new state assessment. The new assessment meant that our state would gradually phase out the current TAKS assessments. Changes in the new STAAR have been plentiful and frequent, which left most districts confused. Last school year was a dress reversal; scores did not count against or for any district during this phase in year. This school year with the STAAR administration upon us, my facilitator requested that I provide my department, special education, with training. I created a power point presentation as my training. On December 10, 2012, I presented my power point to my colleagues. I was apprehensive because we have a testing coordinator and I do not hold that position. My colleagues surprised me with their feedback; both my colleagues, facilitator and diagnostician were amazed at the amount of information and enjoyed the personal touches I integrated into the presentation. I included pictures of my colleagues as past STAARs and their kids, or grandkids as future STAARs. My presentation/training assisted the case managers, facilitator and diagnostician with decisions at ARD. The case managers were provided enough information to make informed state assessment recommendations to ensure their students success. My colleagues received enough training to educate their student's parents, so they could better understand the ARD committee decisions that affect their child's education. assessment, can influence the student's graduation plan and post secondary goals. Therefore, my goal was to create a presentation that was informative, accurate and valid.
