Secret 1: LEARN ABOUT WORD STRESS (B quyt 1: Tm hiu trng m ca t)

Word Stress is golden key number one for speaking and understanding English. Word Stress is very important ... This is one of the best ways for you to understand spoken English especially English spoken fast. (Trng m ca t l cha kha vng s 1 ni v hiu ting Anh. Trng m ca t rt quan trng ... y l mt trong nhng cch hay nht bn hiu ting Anh ngi ta ni - c bit l ting Anh ni nhanh). What is Word Stress? (Trng m ca t l g?) Take 3 words: photograph, photographer and photographic, for example. Do they sound the same when spoken? No! They sound different, because one syllable in each word is stressed (stronger than the others). (H y ly v d 3 t: photograph, photographer v photographic. Khi ni ln, chng nghe c ging nhau khng? Khng! Chng nghe khc nhau v trong mi ch c mt vn c nhn mnh hn cc vn khc). PHotograph phoTOgrapher photoGHRAPHic This happens in ALL words with 2 or more syllables: TEACHer, JaPAN, CHINa, aBOVE, converSAtion, INteresting, imPORtant, deMAND, etCETera. The syllables that are not stressed are weak or small or quiet. Native speakers of English listen for the stressed syllables, not the weak syllables. If you

use Word Stress in your speech, you will instantly and automatically improve your pronunciation and your comprehension. If you have an English teacher, ask her to help you understand Word Stress. Try to hear the stress in words each time you listen to English on the radio, or in films for example. Your first step is to hear and recorgnise it. After that, you can use it! Secret 2: sentence stress (B quyt 2: Trng m trong cu)

Sentence Stress is golden key number two for speaking and understanding English. With Sentence Stress, some *words* in a sentence are stressed (loud) and other words are weak (quiet). Look at the following sentence: (Trng m trong cu l cha kha vng th 2 ni v hiu ting Anh. Vi trng m trong cu, mt s t trong mt cu c nhn mnh cn nhng t khc th c yu. Bn h y nhn cu sau y:)

We want to go
Do we say every word with the same tress and force? No! We make the important words *big* and the unimportant words small. What are the important words in this sentence? Yes, youre right: WANT and GO. (C phi ch no chng ta cng c mnh nh nhau khng? Khng! Chng ta h y vit nhng t quan trng bng ch in ln v nhng t khng quan trng bng ch in nh. Secret 3: listen! Listen! Listen! (B quyt 3: Nghe v hy lng nghe!)

Students sometimes say: I dont listen to the news on the radio because its too fast for me and I cant understand it.. Thats a pity! When its too fast for you, when you cant understand it, that is exactly when you NEED to lesten to it!!! How can you improve if you dont listen and practise? (Cc sinh vin i khi ni: Em khng nghe tin tc trn rai v n nhanh qu i vi em nn em khng hiu. Tht ng tic! Khi n nhanh qu v em khng hiu c chnh l lc cc em cn phi lng nghe ch!!! Nu cc em khng lng tai tp nghe th lm sao m nghe gii cho c?) When you were a baby, did you understand your own language? When you were 3 weeks old, or 2 months, or 1 year, did you understand everything? Of course not! But you learned to understand by listening. Think about it. You learned to understand your own language by listening, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. After that, you learned to speak. Then you learned to read. And then you learned to write. But listening came first! (Khi mi sinh ra , cc em c hiu ting ni ca cc em khng? Lc cc em c 3 tun hay 2 thng hoc 1 nm tui cc em c hiu ht mi th khng? D nhin l khng! Mun hiu c cc em phi lng nghe. Secret 4: dont listen!

(B quyt 4: ng lng nghe!) In the last secret I said LISTEN! LISTEN! LISTEN! Now I say dont listen! What do I mean? (Trong b quyt va ri ti ni: Lng nghe, h y lng nghe! By gi ti li ni: ng lng nghe! ti mun ni g y?) Do you know the difference between the verbs TO LISTEN and TO HEAR? TO LISTEN is active. TO HEAR is passive. Sometimes you can LISTEN too hard. Sometimes you can TRY too hard. Sometimes it is better only to HEAR. Let the radio play. Let the cassette play. But DONT listen. Just HEAR. Your subconscious sill listen for you. And you will still learn. If you listen and try to understand, you may block on one word and get frustrated. Dont worry! Just HEAR!. Let it play. And you - you do nothing. Your brain will HEAR, your subconscious will LISTEN and you will LEARN! (Bn c bit s khc nhau gia hai ng t Lng nghe v Nghe khng? Lng nghe c tnh cch ch ng. Nghe c tnh cch b ng. i khi bn c th lng nghe ht sc chm ch. i khi bn c th c rng sc nghe. i khi tt hn bn ch cn NGHE thi. C mc cho bng ni g th ni. Bn ch NGHE thi. Tim thc ca bn s lng nghe gim cho bn. Secret 5: improve your vocabulary with 5 words a day!

(B quyt 5: Trau di t vng vi 5 t mi ngy) Vocabulary is easy! How many days in a year are there? 365, normally (on Earth). If you learn only 5 new words a day, you will learn 5 x 365 = 1825 new words in a year. ONE THOUSAND, EIGHT HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FIVE WORDS. That is a lot of new words. And we are not counting all the other words you will learn in other ways reading, conversation etc. Buy a notebook and write in 5 new words EACH day, EVERY day. Learn them!!! You will soon have an excellent vocabulary. (T vng d thi m! Mi nm c bao nhiu ngy? 365 ngy, thng thng l nh vy. Nu mi ngy bn ch hc 5 t th mi nm bn s hc c 5 x 365 = 1825 t mi. Mt ngn tm trm hai mi lm t. (B quyt 6: 30 pht mi ngy tt hn 3,5 gi mi tun) In fact, 30 minutes of English study once a day is better than 5 hours once a week! Study regulary. Study often. (Qu tht hc ting Anh 30 pht mi ngy tt hn l mi tun hc lun 5 gi mt ln! H y hc u n. Hc thng xuyn.) LITTLE + OFTEN is better than LOT + SOMETIMES Its easier, too. You can easily find 30 minutes each day. How? You can ger up 30 minutes earlier. Or have a shorter lunch break. Fix a particular time every day and keep it! (iu cng d thc hin na. Mi ngy bn d dng tm c 30 pht. Bng cch no?
