PQRM: Enhancing Reliability & Maintainability

This document discusses reliability concepts including: 1) Reliability is defined as the probability that a component or system will perform its intended functions for a specific period of time under given conditions. Failure rate is the number of failures occurring in a unit of time. 2) Reliability and probability are related concepts, with reliability being the probability of reliable function and failure being the probability of failure occurring over the same period. 3) Examples are given to demonstrate how to calculate mean time to failure and failure rate from failure data. Different reliability models like series, parallel and series-parallel are also briefly mentioned.

Reliability
Probability that a component / system , when operating under given conditions, will perform its intended functions adequately for a specific period of time. Inherent reliability Achievable reliability

Reliability and Probability

R- probability of reliable function for a specific period of time. F- probability of failure occurring during the same period of time Then R+ F =1

Failure Rate ( )
The number of failures occurring in a unit time is known as failure. It can be calculated during a specific period for a given number of component. e.g. If there are 5 failure occurring during a period of 1000 hours to which 500 components are subjected , then FR = 5/500 * 1/1000 = 1 * 10-5 Failure/hr

e.g.
Mid Frequency (days) values, x , f fx 0-4 2 18 4-8 6 10 8-12 10 13 12-16 14 9 16-20 18 7 20-24 22 5 24-28 26 4 28-32 30 4 32-36 34 2 36-40 38 2 40-44 42 2 44-48 46 1 48-52 50 1 52-56 54 0 56-60 58 1 60-64 62 1 36 60 130 126 126 110 104 120 68 76 84 46 50 0 58 62

The mean time to failure (MTTF) m = fx/f = 1256/80= 15.7 days= 376.8 hrs The mean failure rate 1/m = 1/376.8 failure /hr.
