COMPARISON OF THE ACIDITY OF FRUIT JUICES I. Introduction Fruit juices contain different organic acids.

One of the acids present is citric acid. Acid-base titration is used to determine the concentration of acidic or basic solution by neutralizing the solution with an acid or base with known concentration. In order to detect of the reaction is complete, an indicator is added to the solution being titrated. It is a compound which changes its color depending on the pH of the solution. Apparatus 50-mL burette 10-mL pipette 250-mL volumetric flask 250-mL Erlenmeyer flask 250-mL beaker Electronic top loading balance Iron stand Iron clamp White background

III. Procedure

A. Preparation of NaOH solution Calculate the amount of NaOH pellets to be used in 250 mL of 0.05g NaOH solution. Prepare amount of NaOH pellets on 250 mL beaker.

Add about 25 mL distilled water and stir until dissolved. Transfer NaOH solution to 250 mL volumetric flask then fill the flask with distilled water up to 250 mL mark. B. Standardization of NaOH solution Weigh two 0.150 g of potassium acid phthalate in two Erlenmeyer flasks. Dissolve each with 30 mL distilled water and add 3 drops of phenolphthalein

Rinse and fill the burette with the prepared NaOH solution. Titrate each potassium acid phthalate solution and determine acidity. C. Determination of acidity of fruit juices Prepare four samples of 5.00 mL of two different fruit juice drinks into four Erlenmeyer flasks. Dilute with 20 mL distilled water and add 3 drops of phenolphthalein.

Titrate each sample and determine acidity. IV. Data and Observations Table 1. Standardization of NaOH solution
