who has the authority to hire or
supervise a person with your skills.

They may or may not have a job


opening at the time of the interview.

You are looking for a particular type of


job. The interviewer may or may not
have an opening. But he or she is likely
to hire someone with skills similar to
yours– or can refer you to someone who
does.

Know Who Will be Interviewing You

You want to know if it will be a 1 on 1 or


panel interview (you need to know how
many resumes to bring) It is always
wise to bring a few extras just in case.
Also, you want to know the
interviewers name and the correct
pronunciation.

references, portfolio (if applicant has
one), master application, questions to
ask the interviewer, and two ink pens
(Blue or Black Only)

Review and familiarize yourself with your resume prior
to the interview
Make Multiple Copies of Resume
Have References Available
Submit a copy of your reference page along with your
resume
There should be between 3 and 5 references listed on one
page

When using personal references, DO NOT use a close
relative with the same last name, someone who is not
employed or has never been, or someone who does not
have a contact number
A professional reference is someone you
have worked with such as, a supervisor or
co-worker either present or past

Dress For Success

Dress appropriately and professionally.


Find out the dress code for the
company you are interviewing with
and dress one step above what the
company policy is.

You DO NOT want to over dress or


under dress for the interview

Make sure hair is clean and combed
Brush teeth and use mouthwash for
fresh breath
Hands should be neat, clean, and nails
well groomed
Shower or bath prior to interview
If you wear make-up use sparingly;

When answering questions speak clear and


concise so the interviewer can hear and
understand what you are saying. Be kind &
courteous. Do not mutter or use slang during
your interview

Before answering a question think about your


answer. Knowing how to answer questions before
hand makes you more prepared and relaxed

You should have 3 to 5 questions ready to ask


the interviewer

Know when the interview is over.

Confirm your interest in the position, address


the interviewer by name once again, give a
firm handshake, thank them for their time
and consideration before leaving.

Send A Thank You Card or Letter
You should write a thank you note or card immediately after
the interview. Be sure to send one to each interviewer if
there was more than 1. It can be typed in letter format,
emailed or mailed. Hand written thank you cards are more
personal, but all are acceptable

Follow Up Phone Call

You should follow up by phone 3 to 5 days after


the interview. When you call ask the interviewer if
the position has been filled or if a decision has been
made regarding the hiring. This will reconfirm your
interest in employment. BE PERSISTENT!!!! NOT
PUSHY!!!!
