Osmosis “dry” lab

Questions

2. In the four scenarios (A, B, C and D), we notice that with time, the mass of the
“sausage” increases. Moreover, in either cold or warm water, the mass of the undiluted
corn syrup increases more in the same amount of time than the diluted corn syrup, and the
mass increase of diluted and undiluted corn syrup (respectively), is more significant in
warm water.

3. Temperature affected the results of the diluted corn syrup. In the same amount of time,
the mass of the “sausage” increased faster in warm water than in cold water. In cold water
the mass increase is of 3.2 grams, in warm water the mass increase is of 5.4 grams (in the
same amount of time). We observe the same trend with the undiluted corn syrup. The
temperature affects the speed of mass increase, the speed of osmosis. Temperature has
this effect because it gives particles more kinetic energy and osmosis will occur faster.

4. Concentration affects the results. The speed at witch the mass increases is correlated to
the concentration of solute. In scenario A (corn syrup diluted therefore lower
concentration of solute) the mass increase in 35 minutes was of 3.2 grams. In scenario B
(corn syrup undiluted), the concentration of solute was more significant than in A and in
the same amount of time, the mass increase was of 10.5 grams The same trend is
observed with warm water. We can conclude that the higher the concentration of solute
the faster the osmosis.

5. The higher the temperature, the faster the rate of osmosis

6. The higher the concentration of solute, the faster the rate of osmosis

7. A concentrated solution of fertilizer will destroy plant root cells if placed too close to a
plant. The solution of fertilizer is hypertonic to the plant cell therefore; the water
diffuses out of the plant cell, causing it to shrivel. If the fertilizer is
placed further away from the cell, its concentration gradient will go
down. As a result it wont destroy plant root cells
