AMBASSADOR LAMAMRA MEETS WITH MR MIKE SMITH, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL COUNTER TERRORISM COMMITTEE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORATE

Addis Ababa, 25 February 2013: Ambassador Ramtane Lamamra, Commissioner for Peace and Security, met today with Mr Mike Smith, the Executive Director of the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED). The meeting is part of the continued collaboration between the Commission and the specialized UN bodies and agencies on countering terrorism and violent extremism on the continent. Mr. Smith informed Ambassador Lamamra about current efforts undertaken by the CTED, including visits to AU member states and capacity building activities in the fields of law enforcement, border security and control, and anti-money laundering/counter-terrorism financing. The meeting further provided Ambassador Lamamra and Mr. Smith the opportunity to discuss the current situation concerning terrorism and violent extremism on the continent, particularly in the Sahel region, and efforts being taken by the Commission and the CTED to address the various challenges at hand. In this regard, Ambassador Lamamra stressed the importance of comprehensive action geared towards achieving sustainable results and impact on the ground, and enhancing the security and stability of all states in the region and beyond. They reiterated their commitment to continue collaboration and coordination in promoting full and effective implementation of the AU counter-terrorism framework, the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
