    Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that causes itchy, purple-colored bumps or scaly patches on the skin. It can affect the skin, scalp, nails, genitals and mucous membranes of the mouth. The cause of lichen planus is unknown, but it is considered an autoimmune reaction where the immune system attacks its own tissues. Treatment options include topical corticosteroids, oral corticosteroids or immunosuppressants depending on the severity and location of symptoms. Prognosis is generally good, but lichen planus involving the mouth or genitals can be persistent and difficult to treat.
