Ichangu

One of the four main Narayan temples, Ichangu Narayan lies on the far west side of
the Valley underneath the mountain of Nagarjun. The temple was built by Haridatta, a
king who antedated the king Manadeva by several generations. King Haridatta has
been assumed to be the founder of the four main hilltop Narayan temples in the Valley
(Ichangu, Changu, Sekh - the substitute for the original Lokapalasvamin, and Bisanku).
Assuming they were all consecrated around the same time, this dates Ichangu to
around the 4th century. The present structure is dated to the 18th century.

Ichangu Narayan
Ichangu Narayan temple lies beyond the village of Ichangu, three kilometers northwest of the
swayambhunath stupa. The road from Swayambhunath leas uphill towards a Bhairab shine at the
village of Halchowk at the top of the hill from where there are excellent views of the stupa with
Kathmandu valley in the background. The two-storeyed temple was built in the 18th century.
Attractively set amid trees and open countryside, stonewall surrounds the complex. There is a
small statue of Vishnus vehicle, Garuda, as well as stone images of Vishnus chakra (discus)
and conch shell.
