UNITED INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY (UIU) Dept.

of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE) Exam: Midterm, Trimester: Summer, Year: 2012 Course: EEE 207 (Sec-A, B), Title: Electronics II Marks: 60, Time: 1 Hour 45 Minutes There are 5 (Five) questions. Answer any 4 (Four). Figures in the right-hand margin indicate full marks. Symbols used have their usual meanings. 1. (a) An analog computing machine requires the solution y(t) of a 3rd order constantcoecient dierential equation of an input f(t) expressed as f (t) = ea0 t sin(t) at + a2 [09]

Design and program a prototype of this circuit that can give the solution of the dierential equation given by 5 d3 y d2 y dy e3t 11 3 + 17 y = sin(100t) dt3 dt2 dt 5t 4 with y (0) = 10, y (0) = 5, y (0) = 12 [06]

(b) Briey answer the following questions based on the circuit mentioned in Q. 2(a). i. Does the circuit operate, if initial conditions are not provided? Why? ii. How can you operate this circuit to solve a second order dierential equation? iii. Suppose f(t) is changed to f(t)+10. How can you accommodate this change in the above circuit? 2. (a) Design a circuit using OPAMPS and necessary components that can implement the following arithmetical expression a3 (b c) 3 ea log (b) f (t) = + d4 (c d)2 where a, b, c and d are input signals. (b) Design a circuit using only one OPAMP to evaluate the following expression: f (t) = 3a 4b where a and b are input signals. 3. (a) One day you asked an electrician to design a 2nd order high pass lter circuit. He designed and implemented the circuit, but failed to operate. His circuit diagram was shown in Figure 2. As an expert can you nd out the errors in the circuit diagram? (b) One of your friends implemented a second order low pass lter using R-L combination. Do you think that this circuit is wisely designed? Justify. (c) The Q-factor of a bandpass lter is 25. If the center frequency is 20 KHz, what is the bandwidth of this lter. Do you think that this lter can be used as a tuning circuit? Justify your answer.

In an application you need to design a lter based on the following ndings given in Table 1: (a) What type of lter it is? (b) Draw the Bode-plot for this lter. (c) What will be the order of the low-pass and high-pass section of the lter? (d) What will be the gain of the low-pass, high-pass and the whole lter for best Butterworth lter performance? (e) Design the lter. [01] [02] [02] [02] [08] [3.5]
