ABSTRACT: Field investigations were undertaken to study the influence of sowing dates on growth, flowering seed yield and quality of French Bean Viz., Arka Komal and Burfee Stringless in red sandy clay loam soils at GKVK, Bangalore during 2000-2001. Crop sown in September 15th produced significantly higher growth and yie4ld attributes leading to higher seed yield (19.96 q/ha) followed by August 15th sowing (18.16g/ha). Seed yield drastically reduced with delayed sowing to October 15th (13.93q/ha0 and November 15th (11.69q/ha) which accounts 30.21 and 41.43 per cent reduction in seed yield over September 15th sowing. Variety Arka Komal produced significantly higher seed yield (16.19q/ha) tham Burpeestringless (15.58q/ha). However, 100 seed weight and seed yield in terms of germination and field emergence increased with delay in sowing from August 15th to November 15th although seed yield reduced considerably in later sowings. However, September 15th sowing could be ideal for obtaining economical seed yield with least scarifies on seed quality.
