Algebra

Introduction Most likely anyone who teaches calculus would agree that a good knowledge of algebra is essential for a course in calculus. However, that is not the only reason we should learn algebra (Usiskin, 1995). Like, reading, writing, and other practical skills, it is easy for teachers to convey to students the importance of numeracy. Algebra on the other hand is more abstract, making it difficult to get students to see the value of it. When it comes to providing the grounds for learning mathematics further than arithmetic namely algebra, geometry and their extensions most people tend to say something about needing it for college. It is true, but why is it so important? In the next couple of examples we have some answers to this question. Some features of algebra are: Algebra Is the language of generalization (it describes in a very simple way what you are doing that applies its abstract feature) Is a tool for soloing certain kind of numerical problems(linear equation , slope, quadratics, exponents) Enables us to answer all the questions of a particular problems (quadratic formula, area of rectangular, circumference of a cylinder, etc ) Algebra is the relationship between quantities
