K-W-L Reading Strategy

Evaluation of Effectiveness: - Compare scores before and after using KWL tehnique It combines: -prereading -during-reading -postreading to help students get a better grasp of the book or text

Purpose of KWL techniques: - elicits prior knowledge -sets purpose fo reading -helps monitor their comprehension -assess your comprehension of the text -provide an opportunity to expand ideas

How to use this reading technique? 1- Draw three column (K-W-L) 2- Activate prior knowledge with what you already know about the topic of the text (K column)

KWL is an introductory strategy that provides a structure for


recalling what you know about a topic,noting what you want to know and finally listing what has been learned and is yet to be learned

Identify what you think you know about the topic
> generate background knowledge > brainstorming and writing ideas

Generate a list of questions about what you want to know


> use 6W 1H to confirm/verify questions > make prediction of the organization of the topic > focus on the ideas and the questions you have raised

Aware of what you have just learned
> make notes for new ideas and interesting facts >answer the questions listed in column W
