Distillation

Distillation involves boiling the water to produce water vapour. The vapour controls a cool surface where it condensed as a liquid. Water boils at 100 0C. The vapour collected and allowed to cool and condense in a Liebig condenser.

Porcelain chips are added to the distillation flask to ensure even boiling and to prevent excessive bubbling in the flask.

Distillation of Sea Water

Aim: To purify water from sea water by distillation. Material: Sea water Apparatus: Distillation flask, thermometer, Liebig condenser, wire gauze, beaker, Bunsen burner, retort stand and clamp, tripod stand.

Method
1. Set up the apparatus. 2. Fill the Liebig condenser with running tap water. 3. Heat up the sea water in the flask. 4. The distillate will collect at 100 0C. 5. Observe the characteristics of the distillate.
