Summary. In the districts which came within the Roman Patriarchate`s jurisdiction
parallel to the spread of Christianity there originated a great number of different, local
liturgies which are classified in several elementary groups which are altogether called
the western liturgy type. Gallic liturgies belong to one of these groups and they existed
up to the eighth century i. e. until the reforms of Pippin the Short and Carlo the Great
when the Roman liturgy type was introduced in the whole Empire and other types
were driven back. The very origin of the Gallic type of liturgy and the conditions under which it had developed remains a mystery because we lack the relevant sources.
Namely most sources are dated to the later period of time so that the texts they contain
abound the ingredients of the Roman liturgy type. There didnt exist a one and unique
liturgy which was served in entire Gallia liturgies differ in the place and the date of
their origin. Nevertheless some general attributes which all the liturgies of Gallic type
had in commom could be singled out.
The importance of Gallic liturgies is huge because they bear witness to an ancient and to a large extent authentic Christian tradition. Besides, in the districts distant
from the big Christian centers a certain conservativism was predominant. The influence from Syria, Antioch and Alexandria which dates to ante-nicean period are preserved almost intact so that even in the texts from the fifth and sixth century we have
written evidence about the oldest liturgy language from the period of its developmental stage.
