ZigBee - based on IEEE 802.15.4 wireless protocol. The ZigBee Alliance aims at key design requirements of wireless networks such as low costs, reliability and less complexity.
It works in the RF range- 2.4 GHz worldwide,868 MHz is the European standard and 916 in the US.

Heavy lines show a signal from a reduced function end device passing through multiple routers to reach a gateway functioning as a coordinator; lighter lines show possible alternative signal paths

Key ones include: Energy Management and Efficiency Home Automation Building Automation Industrial Automation Thus the technology can be used in myriad ways without the concerns of power consumption, costs, security, reliability and complexity.
