Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact Rationale/Reflection InTASC Standard: Standard #6: Assessment The teacher understands and uses

multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learners progress, and guide the teachers and learners decision making. Brief Description of Evidence: I observed an individual at the Kindergarten level, by giving her concepts of print assessment. This is an assessment of each childs level of understanding with emerging literacy concepts. When assessing concepts of print, I sat down with the child, one-on one, and read an engaging early level text, asking the child to help with the reading. As we were reading together, I asked a series of questions for the child to answer throughout the book. While asking questions, I was monitoring the individuals learning progress by documenting the outcome on the assessment paper in front of me. I developed a presentation over the ISTAR assessment for Kindergarten, supporting evidence of engaging learners in their own growth, how the teacher can monitor their students learning progress, and the different areas and levels of assessment for decision making.

Analysis of What I Learned: I have learned that using multiple assessment methods with students will help enhance students knowledge about emerging literacy concepts, identify the learners progress, and determine which assessment seems to work better. Just by assessing one individual child, I learned that many children will have different understandings about the conventions that we use to communicate meaning in print. Overall, using multiple methods of assessment with students will help guide teachers and learners decision making.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the InTASC Standard: This artifact demonstrates my competence on the standard, because I have researched multiple methods of assessment in order to get a better understanding of which assessments will work and help engage learners in their own growth. Both assessments I completed and researched, have given me a professional example of how to properly monitor learners progress. These two assessments will also help guide teachers and learners on decision making.
