Deep Ocean

On the back of this sheet, please write ten or more notes as you watch the video Deep Ocean.
Pick one of the following prompts to write a 5 paragraph essay on Google Docs as your homework.
This should be a typical essay with an intro paragraph, three paragraphs for the body, and a
conclusion paragraph. Title your essay Deep Ocean. Please do not turn in your video notes.
#1. The blue whale is said to be the largest creature ever to have lived. A blue whales heart alone
can measure the size of a small sports car and weigh up to 1,000 pounds. In the 1800s,
boats and sailors, called whalers, hunted blue whales for their oil, which was used in lamps. As
a result, their population was drastically reduced. This whale is now listed on the World
Conservation Unions Red List of Threatened Species. Write an essay telling why whales are
important and should be protected. Also, create a 8.5x 11 poster for the blue whale as part of the
Marine Protection Act, urging the protection of the species and explaining why the animals should
be saved.

#2. The stingray feeds mostly on plankton found in the water. Write an essay, explaining how this
animals unusual physical characteristics support its survival. Be sure to include in your discussion
specific features of the stingray. How are the placement of the eyes and the construction of the
mouth helpful to this animal? What other features of the stingray stand out to you?

#3. Do you have some other oceanography idea that youd like to write an essay about? I am
open to your topic as long as you can write a five paragraph essay with an introduction
paragraph, three ideas as the body and a concluding paragraph. Please just clear your topic
with me before you start.
