TOPICAL CRYOTHERAPY ANALGESIC


Topical cryotherapy analgesic is a pain reliever for those who suffer from back and neck pain, sore muscles and arthritis, which is greaseless and stainless. Although topical cryotherapy analgesics are available over-the-counter, you: 1) need physician orders to use this product on your patients 2) must include it in your care plan. 3) must add this to the green medication schedule in the home 4) must add this to the medication list in BTI 5) must update the green medication schedule and the medication list in BTI as indicated, including discontinuation if/when applicable.

TOPICAL CRYOTHERAPY ANALGESIC POLICY


SUBJECT: Modality - topical cryotherapy analgesic OBJECTIVE: To define the proper procedure for performing topical cryotherapy analgesic applications. TEXT: Definition: topical cryotherapy analgesic is formulated to provide pain relief, exercise/training and overall comfort. It is a fast acting, deep penetrating pain reliever. Apply a small amount 10-15 minutes prior to rehabilitation exercises, ultrasound treatments, massage therapy, soft tissue trigger point therapy, and pre- and poststretching exercises. Effect: Pain relief from: Sore muscles, muscle sprains, back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, arthritis, ankle pain, knee pain, hip pain, elbow pain, and muscle strains. Contraindications: External heating pads Tight wraps (only breathable wraps are recommended) Pregnancy and nursing mothers Caregiver training for proper use must be given prior to application of topical cryotherapy analgesic. The topical analgesic should not be left in the patients home. However, if it is found to be effective the patient/caregiver can purchase the product over-the-counter.
