DSS Components

1. Database Management System 2. Model Management System 3. Support Tools

The Data Management System

To solve a problem the necessary data may come from external or internal database. In an organization, internal data is generated by systems such as TPS and MIS; external data may come from variety of sources such as newspapers, online data services. Some examples of external data are competitors, government regulations, economic indicators. The data in DSS are managed by DBMS which covers compilation of data, manipulation of data, data generation, updating, maintenance, and dissemination of data.

Model Management System

This system stores and accesses models that managers use to make a decision. Such models are used for designing a manufacturing facilities, analyzing the financial health of an organization etc. Decision maker use qualitative models to take decisions. Some models that decision maker use to make decisions are statistical models, financial and accounting models etc. These models are extensively used in different functional areas of a business.

Support Tools
Support tools like online health, pull down, user interface, graphical analyses, facilitates the user interactions with the system. Better the interface greater will the chance of system being accepted by the user.

MODEL BUILDING GOAL SEEKING

WHAT IF ANALYSIS

RISK ANALYSIS

GRAPHICAL ANALYSIS

MODEL BUILDING

This allows decision maker to identify the most appropriate model for solving the problem on hand.

This is the process of assessing the impact of changes to model variables ,values of variables or the interrelationship among the variables. WHAT IF This helps manager to be proactive rather than ANALYSIS reactive.
It is the process of determining the input values required to achieve the certain goal.

GOAL SEEKING

RISK ANALYSIS

It is a function of DSS that allows managers to access the risk associated with various alternatives.

GRAPHICAL ANALYSIS

This helps managers to quickly digest large volume of data and visualizes the impact of various courses of action

COMPARISON- MIS and DSS

MIS
1. The focus is on structured tasks and routine decisions. 2. Identifies information requirements. 3. Delivers system bas on frozen requirement. 4. Provides only indirect access to data by managers. 5. Reliance on computer expert. 6. MIS manager may not completely understand structures of decision.

DSS
1. Focus is on semi/ unstructured tasks, which required management judgment. 2. Establishes tools to be used for decision process. 3. Follows interactive process hence current data can be used. 4. Managers have direct access to data. 5. Reliance on managerial judgment. 6. Manager knowing nature of decision and decision making environment.
