To that end, and especially for anyone
visiting this site as a result of the negative
publicity about the case, I present the following
photo comparison and explanation.
Meier’s Earliest Photos
These are some of Meier's earliest UFO photos,
taken by him in India, in 1964. (They are black
and white but these prints have a yellowish tint.)

attacks and claims against Meier and the case.
However, after CFI-West/IIG failed to be able
to duplicate Meier’s UFO photos, and failed to
submit any film or video version as they had
promised, James Randi withdrew his claim that
the Meier case was a hoax.
It is the standard operating procedure
for these skeptics to debunk hoaxes, and some
of them take particular delight in utilizing their Photo 9 © FIGU
skills as magicians in exposing the "tricks" used
to create and perpetrate the hoaxes. Therefore,
they take pride in knowing and explaining just
how these hoaxes were perpetrated. These
skeptics have all indicated that, at the very least,
Meier used models and/or hubcaps, pie pans,
etc., having finally conceded that he had no
access to computers, special effects,
PhotoShop, etc. when the majority of his photos
were taken, i.e. from 1964-1979.

Model UFO Photos

This photo below is the classic "sun
shot", from 1975, which has the sunlight
glinting off of a UFO next to a large, known
object, the tree, which helps confirm that the
UFO is indeed a full-sized object. (Note from
James Deardorff: When Stevens' prints, one-
copy removed from the originals, were
carefully examined by Stevens and his crew,
they could see that a tree branch was in front of
the craft's left edge in photo #164 <Stevens,
1982, p. 352> and in #175 <Tom Welch, p. 37
of the 1979 photo-album>. Further copies that
the rest of us have had available to examine no
longer had quite enough contrast to make a
definite discernment.)

The Origin of the Skeptical Challenge
The skeptics have long claimed that
Meier's UFO photos, films and video are all
hoaxes using models and special effects, forced
perspective, etc., so let's see if they can prove it.
But first, the whole notion of having the
skeptics duplicate Meier's photos, films and
video came about when Vaughn Rees, then a
case investigator for CFI-West/IIG, referred to
the evidence as an "easily duplicated hoax". I
we've seen, by skeptic / model maker /
photographer Jeff Ritzmann, including a photo
of the model he used. His photos can be said to
create a similar visual "effect" to some of
Meier's photos, which doesn't mean that they
are the same as photos of real UFOs. The main
distinguishing difference, which invalidates
claims of duplication, is that Ritzmann’s photos
are of discernibly small objects close to the
camera, while Meier’s photos show large
objects a greater distance from the camera.
Here below you have a photo of a model
of a Boeing 747. It looks very similar to the real
thing and is, in comparison, considerably more
detailed than the model UFO Jeff Ritzmann
made. As good as the model of the 747 is, it's
obviously not the same object as the real 747 in
the aviation photos. And, if photographed next
to large, known objects it would be all the more
obvious that it was a model.
And here are the two photos referred to
by James Deardorff, Meier's #152 and #153.
One can see the poorer quality of focus of the
branches consistent with the reported setting of
Meier's camera. Photo #153 is a blow-up, which
caused the branches there and the beamship to
have about equal degrees of slightly fuzzy
edges. It's the branches lower down in #153 that
were quite a lot closer to the camera that were
strongly out of focus.

So duplicating (or, in the case of the
Ritzmann photos, partially duplicating) an
"effect" does not mean that it is a photograph of
the same actual object, nor does it prove that
Meier used models in his photographs. And,
since this is what the majority of skeptics claim,
it's been up to them to both prove that Meier did
indeed use models (which they haven't been
able to) and that they can truly duplicate his
evidence with photos of models of their own.
But as Deardorff points out, only Ritzmann's
own photos can clearly be seen to be of models.
Comparing the Photos
In comparing Jeff's model photos with
Meier's, there's also another crucial detail that
further, and irrefutably, establishes the UFOs in
Meier's photos as full-sized objects (some 21' in
diameter). This is quite simply and effectively
accomplished by the placement of the UFOs in
many of Meier's photos next to large, known
objects such as trees. It's already perfectly clear
and obvious that Jeff didn't - ever - photograph
his model directly next to large trees because to
do so would simply and conclusively show how
tiny the model is, unlike the large, real UFOs
that Meier photographed and filmed. (Gee, why
is there no film from the skeptics?)
On the following page we have another
example of what the skeptics didn't attempt to
duplicate, three UFOs with an object in the
foreground, a photograph made all the more
complex by the slightly different angle of each
of the UFOs! Does anyone really think that a
one-armed man trudged into the windy Swiss
mountains and "hoaxed" this photo by throwing
three "models" into the air? Could you do it
with the same known equipment under the same
circumstances?

Here we have three UFOs, again at

different angles to each other with a tree branch
in the foreground. But this isn't merely one
photo; it's one frame from a film of the three
UFOs...two of which disappear leaving the
other one hovering! Now the skeptics would
have to explain, no they would have to prove,
how a one-armed man threw three models into
the air…and managed to keep them there long
enough to film them. While the skeptics are full
of unsubstantiated theories, they have only
demonstrated their complete and total inability
to prove them by any means.

of photos that follows. Please note that the
opinions he refers to are those of forestry
experts, who know the difference between
models and real, full-sized trees, something the
skeptics seem stubbornly unable to understand.

THE TREE'S MATURITY. In 1985 I

professors of Forest Science at Oregon State
University to determine if they could identify the

to duplicate the films, video and sound

the camera and why similar tests of the model
photos will reveal that they are small objects
close to the camera. Anyone still think that
Meier was using a tiny model?
The Wedding Cake UFO
Here is a photo of Jeff Ritzmann's model
of Meier's Wedding Cake UFO (WCUFO).
Ritzmann claims that Meier's WCUFO is really
a model, made from a garbage can lid and other
household items. We are waiting to see his
version of the WCUFO using those items, to Photo 31 © FIGU
prove his claim, but for now he is using cake
pans, perhaps because it's called the Wedding
Cake UFO?
NOTE: To avoid actual comparison with
Meier’s UFO photographs, Jeff Ritzmann will
not allow this photo to be displayed. Despite his
claims that he has duplicated Meier’s
photographs, he has threatened a lawsuit if the
photo is posted. This effectively ends his
challenge to the Meier UFO photos. (Please see
* above for more information.)

man, who's approximately 6' tall, in basically
the same location. You can see that neither he,
nor the box, is of sufficient height or length to
fill the scene, as the WCUFO did.
average growth (and this is just an educated
guess) of 1-2 feet between whorls." (March,
2006)

appreciable. From the estimate of tree size, one
may then estimate the size of the wedding-cake
craft. Now, according to Professor of Forest
Management, J. D. Brodie of Oregon State
University, who gave me his opinion in 1986,
the tree's height was only 3 to 7 meters (10-23
ft) tall. On the other hand, if the annual top
growth is a typical 0.3 to 0.4m (12 to 16 inches;
see Fig. 8), the tree's height comes out to be 5.5
to 7.3m, (plus whatever portion of the lower
trunk lies unseen below the brow of the ridge).
Hence a 7m height seems reasonable for the
tree.

This 6-10 ft estimate of the height of the

portion of the tree above the craft then translates
to a height for the craft of 4 to 7 feet, and a
diameter of 8.8-15.4 ft, or from 2.7 to 4.7
meters. This suggests that it was the same 3.5m
craft as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 above, and
hovering very close behind the tree.
Another opinion on the tree in question
comes from Professor Emeritus Doug Brodie of
the College of Forestry, Oregon State

"The tree is one of the European true firs
-- Abies species. The picture has only a portion
of the top of the crown 10 to 15 feet. There
could be anywhere from 10 to 50 feet of tree
bole below the picture." (March, 2006)

Wedding-cake craft partially eclipsed by
large fir tree. Only after the English version of
Meier's Fotobuch came out did I become aware
of his photo #850 as published in Through
Space and Time: A Photo Journal of "Billy"
Eduard Albert Meier (Tulsa, OK: Steelmark
LLC, 2004), p. 114. See Fig. 10. This was in the
hills in the general vicinity of the villages/towns
of Auenberg, Egg, Girenbad and Hinwil, some
15 miles ESE of Zurich. Meier shot it around
2:30 pm, April 3, 1981 while standing on the top
of his van, according to his 1999 Verzeichnis.
One can see 5 or 6 separate main branches of
the tree eclipsing most of the right-hand side of
the craft, with more of its branches extending
out to the tree's left side above the craft on up to
the tree's top. According to Dr. Edward C.
Jensen, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs,
Elizabeth P. Ritchie Distinguished Professor,
Forest Ecology and Natural Resources
Education, Oregon State University:
"The portion of the tree above the
potential UFO appears to me to be in the range
of 6-10 feet. Although it's pretty fuzzy, there
appear to be 5 or 6 whorls of branches with an

controlled craft hover in front of an isolated
Norway spruce (picea abies) estimated by Meier
as 15m in height. That day, again in the early
afternoon, he utilized both his Ricoh camera
and his Saba video camera. Fig. 11 on the left
shows one of the Ricoh camera shots. Figs. 10
and 11 below show the scene from a different
viewing angle and from video-camera frames
when the zoom lens was not employed and
when it was fully employed, respectively (focal
length of the video camera going from 12 to 75
mm). The videotaping lasted about six minutes,
and the time for the lens to advance from no
zoom to full zoom was between 3 and 4
seconds. This zooming, and Figs. 10 & 11, ROB McCONNELL

The first photo has been attacked as a
"deliberate hoax" by two skeptics, David
Biedney and Gene Steinberg:
"Michael, seriously, these photos are so
completely faked, it's sad to read your words
trying to establish that they're real..."
"A photo enlarger circa that era would
have served nicely to produce the picture in
question from two negatives placed one atop the
other…"
"The photos are fairly amateurish. I
think movie professionals would have done a
much better job faking those pictures. They
would work more carefully to eliminate the
blatant flaws that so many have discovered."
"While I realize most people, while
perfectly intelligent, aren't skilled in photo
trickery, I'm surprised there isn't more
skepticism here. Holding models on a string and
photographing them against a background of
trees or buildings is old school."
"Taking ALL the "evidence" into
account makes it so clear to easily and quickly
make the case that the Meier story is a
contrived, planned case of disinformation and
outright lies…."
"Mr. Meier is positioned as a prophet,
seer and wise being, and while he is cunning,
the weakness of the photos, videos, sound (a
blatant use of vintage analog synthesizers, any
true audio expert recognizes analog oscillators,
filters and delays, it just so happens that I'm an
_experienced_ synth guy) is damning…"
"In short, Meier is lying, and you're a

Now, consider the amazing quality, and
quantity, of the rest of Meier's photographic
evidence, as well as all the other still
irreproducible physical evidence. Thinking
people should ask themselves just why Meier
would publish such unusual (and certain to be
questioned) photographs as those of the alleged
light/energy ship. Really, why would he risk the
ridicule of being revealed as hoaxing them -
unless he didn't hoax them and, strange as they
may be, they are genuine? And, when a "why"
question like this is asked, it begs a
substantiated, proven answer, rather than just
the aspersions cast by frustrated and defeated
debunkers.
As a final note about these unusual
light/energy ships, I include the following, as
reported by Wendelle Stevens, on page 521 of
"UFO contact from the PLEIADES", published
in 1982, long before the controversy over some
kind of trick photography on Meier's part was
alleged by the two disgruntled skeptics
(emphasis added):
"The whole story seems extremely
bizarre and would be difficult for us to believe
except that my co-investigators, Lee Elders and
his wife Brit, were staying on the property at
Hinterschmidruti in the course of an
investigation follow-up during 1979, and
personally witnessed a similar light show by the
same kind of object.
Brit was awakened about two o'clock in
the morning by an extremely bright light outside
the trailer they were sleeping in. She awakened
Lee and together they watched a light display
and pattern of events similar to the one
described by Billy. There was no evidence that
anybody else in the household observed the
activity watched by Lee and Brit. One has to
wonder how much real activity passes
completely unobserved by anybody."***

But just in case there is still even the
smallest doubt, please consider that these six
forestry experts, Prof. J.D. Brodie, Prof. D.
Hanley, Prof. E.M. Hansen, Richard. K.
Hermann, Prof. Holdenrieder and Dr. Edward
C. Jensen, have recently established, beyond
even a shadow of a doubt, that the trees in the
photos are full-sized, mature trees of
determined heights and, therefore, the UFOs in
Meier's photos, films and video are large objects
a considerable distance from the camera and not
small models close to it.
Perhaps now, as I suggested in the
beginning, we can focus on the really important
information and teachings in the Meier case and
bid a fond farewell to those parties who, for
whatever reasons, are firmly invested in living
in denial and launching unsubstantiated, clearly
envious attacks against Meier and his - still
irreproducible - evidence.
With indisputable proof that Meier is,
and long has been, in touch with more
advanced, space traveling human beings, the
Meier case is clearly the most important story in
all of human history…and the key to our future
survival.
*The skeptics, lacking better arguments,
are fond of making personal attacks against the
highly qualified professionals associated with
the Meier case and the investigation. One of the
people that they target is photographic expert
Jim Dilettoso. Here is an excerpt from a letter
by Wendelle Stevens (lead investigator) wherein
he addresses this issue, "…We chose Jim
Dilettoso to lead our scientific research on the
Meier case because he was head and shoulders
above all the other degreed scientists we had
gone to, who were afraid to speak out because
of 'peer pressure'.
"Jim was a 'professional student' so to
speak. He liked college, was a straight 'A'
student, and his father allowed him to stay in
college until he was 28, I believe. Jim had taken
all the scientific courses college had to offer,
and some at post-graduate level. He could have
gotten a degree in any of a number of fields had
he written the paper, but he did not want to
become locked in any 'peer' group with its risks,
and so he remained apart. But he learned all the
separate lingo of all the scientific fields.
"He also had a number of classmates
who graduated and had risen to Chief
Engineers, Managers and even Owners of
advanced tech research companies, and was
able to get us into any of them. Whenever we
had our introductory discussions with the
management in a new tech facility, he was
easily handy with that particular lingo and
spoke in that familiarity, which led many to
address him as Dr. because of his familiarity
with the field, and they had assumed that he had
his doctorate. He usually corrected them, but
some thought he was just being modest. He in
fact had not written any treatise and had no real
Doctorate and we well knew this…"
**In addition to the investigative team
led by Wendelle Stevens and Lee and Brit
Elders, author Gary Kinder (Light Years) did an
extensive investigation into the Meier case,
even interviewing the then current, and past,
owners of Bar Photo, the photo shop where
Meier bought the only photographic equipment
he ever used, i.e. cameras and tripods. He not
only never bought an enlarger or other
equipment, he never bought dark room
equipment or supplies for developing film,
since all of his photographs and films were
brought to (and then sent out to separate labs
by) Bar Photo. The owners personally handled
and inspected all photos, negatives, slide
positives and films of Meier's (with the
exception of the hundreds of photos he took
while on the 5-day space trip)and attested to
there not being any signs of models,
manipulations, effects, etc. - although they
admitted that they were initially quite shocked
by the UFO subject matter but got used to it
over time.
***It should be noted that, on the same
page in the book, Stevens comments on Meier's
publication of the then as yet not discovered

Experts said a UFO spotted over Arizona was a
research balloon launched by the U.S. space
agency to measure gamma ray emissions.
Bill Stepp of the Columbia Scientific
Balloon Facility in Palestine, Texas, said the
UFO reported Monday was a 4,000-pound
balloon sent to measure the gamma ray
emissions at high altitudes by the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration, The
Arizona Republic reported Tuesday.
Stepp said the balloon was sent out at
about 7:30 a.m. Sunday from Fort Sumter in
New Mexico and drifted over parts of Arizona
Monday before landing at 9 p.m. near Kingman,
Ariz.
He said the balloon can be seen from a
distance of about 170 miles on a clear day due
to its usual altitude of 130,000 feet, causing
reports of UFOs Monday from Albuquerque to
Phoenix.
"It's something unusual," Stepp said.

A New Jersey UFO case is now closed -
with a final report from Field Investigator
Kristen Ann Winslet, according to a report
Winslet recently released.
The original report of a UFO was filed
with MUFON on Feb. 14, 2009, and includes
the following description. This witness
statement is unedited.
"At approximately 7:30pm while sitting
on my front porch I witnessed the most beautiful
color appear in a southern sky. It covered the
width of three streets and was roughly
rectangular in shape and coverage of the sky. It
was a bright turquoise in its center with darker
vivid blue and green at its edges and lasted for
approx. 2 seconds. There was a plane
approaching at the time which veered off to the
left of this illuminated area of sky. I thought I
was seeing things, called to my son and waited
for a reappearance which did not occur. I then
googled what I had witnessed and found similar
stories of recent sightings. It was truly
breathtaking, I hope an explanation can be
provided for what I was lucky enough to have
witnessed."

of the UFO as "Brilliant bright turquoise blue
flash in a foggy, damp, low visibility
sky.overhead in Newark, NJ."
There was a single witness, with the
following UFO description: "Bright blue flash

was a bright turquoise in its center with darker
vivid blue and green at its edges and lasted for
approx. 2 seconds."
Winslet entertained two theories. First,
that this was an IFO or Identified Flying Object,
a natural phenomena, specifically lightning.
"The possibility that the witnesses may have
seen lightning in the skies is very plausible. The
NOAA had documented that the sky was
overcast with temperatures in the low to mid
40’s F. the possibility of lightning was included
in the forecast by weather services in the area."
The second theory is that the sighting is
an Unknown - Other - of UFO. "The possibility
that the witnesses may have seen an
Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) in the skies
cannot be substantiated. As no other reports of
such an event have been reported in the area as

Winslet's conclusion: "As no other
witness(s) to this specific event has been

believe that the evidence afforded by the
witness is conclusive. The theory that the
‘Flash’ sighted by the witness was Lightning is
quite plausible.
"As a result of this analysis and
evaluation of all the evidence provided, I
believe that this case file # US-NJ-2009.02.14

According to claims in a rare video,
George Adamski met with President Kennedy at
the White House in late 1961 and passed on a
letter to him from human looking
extraterrestrials. In addition to giving advice on
the Cuban missile crisis, the alleged letter also
contained an invitation for Kennedy to meet
with the extraterrestrials. If Kennedy did attend
such a meeting, it may explain why he was
certain about human looking extraterrestrial
life; made undisclosed trips to Air Force bases
to deal with the UFO issue; and why he
instructed NASA to cooperate with the USSR
on joint space and lunar missions, and to release
classified UFO files.
Lou Zinstag, Carl Jung’s niece describes
what she was told by Adamski concerning
Kennedy’s alleged meeting with
extraterrestrials:
I still remember his [Adamski’s] White
House story. He told me that he had been
entrusted with a written invitation for President
Kennedy to visit one of the space people’s huge
mother ships at a secret airbase in Desert Hot
Springs, California, for few days. In order to
keep this visit absolutely secret, Adamski was to
take the invitation directly to the White House
through a side door. Still glowing with
excitement and smiling happily, he explained
how the row of cars in which his taxi was
traveling had to stop because of a red light just
in front of this particular door where a man he
knew - a spaceman, he said - was standing
ready to let him in. Adamski later learned that
Kennedy had spent several hours at the airbase
after having canceled an important trip to New
York, and that he had a long talk with the ships
crew, but that he had not been invited for a
flight."
The quality of witness testimonies,
photos and film evidence presented in the rare
video (see part one of this investigative series),
all lead to the conclusion that George Adamski
was largely telling the truth about his flying
saucer sightings and contacts with human
looking extraterrestrials. There is however no
direct physical evidence that Kennedy met with
the extraterrestrials Adamski was in contact
with. There is, however, circumstantial
evidence that such a meeting did happen, and it
influenced Kennedy’s policies on space
cooperation and UFOs.
The first set of circumstantial evidence
concerns Kennedy’s certain knowledge of
UFOs and human looking extraterrestrials. A
former flight steward and loadmaster on Air
Force One, Bill Holden, confirmed that
Kennedy was aware of UFOs and human
looking extraterrestrials. In a June 2007
interview, Holden explained that in June 1963,
while flying to Germany on Air Force One, he
placed two newspapers before Kennedy where
UFOs were clearly pictured on the front page.
In response to Kennedy’s question of what he
thought of UFOs, Holden said: “For us to
believe that we are the only intelligent beings in
the world is unbelievable. So, yes, I believe that
there is such a thing as other human species as
well as UFOs.” In response President Kennedy
said: “You're right, young man.” The
unqualified nature of Kennedy’s response
revealed his knowledge that both UFOs and
human looking extraterrestrials were real. This

A second set of circumstantial evidence
concerns a leaked document that claims that
Kennedy knew, while serving in the U.S.
Congress, about UFO crashes and the recovery
of alien bodies. As a former Naval Intelligence
officer, Kennedy was deemed reliable to receive
such highly classified information. While the
authenticity of the document in question,
"Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit Summary," is
disputed, the U.S. Army did finally
acknowledge through FOIA responses that the
Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit did at one time
exist and was abolished in the late1950s. The

If the leaked document and/or the
military whistleblower are accurate, then
President Kennedy was aware of the reality of
extraterrestrial life and technology. If Kennedy
was so interested in seeing dead alien bodies
during the early part of his administration, then
it is very plausible that he would have accepted
an invitation to meet with live extraterrestrials
as Adamski claimed.
The third set of circumstantial evidence
concerns President Kennedy secretly traveling
to an undisclosed Air Force base to watch
UFOs. A reliable source, according to UFO
researcher Timothy Cooper, said that Kennedy
"did fly out to an air force base to personally
watch an unidentified bogie track from an
aircraft under tight security which got no press
coverage sometime in 1962." If Kennedy did
travel to a secret airbase in California to meet
with live extraterrestrials, then the incident
described by Cooper offered at least one
opportunity for such a meeting to take place.
Kennedy's alleged meeting with
extraterrestrials, would have made him the
second U.S. President to meet extraterrestrial
ambassadors in the California desert. The first
allegedly occurred on February 20, 1954 with
President Eisenhower at Edwards Air Force
base.
So far, the circumstantial evidence
reveals that President Kennedy had been briefed
about UFOs and extraterrestrial life earlier in
his political career. Also, Kennedy knew that
some extraterrestrials looked similar to humans.
Finally, Kennedy secretly traveled to one or
more undisclosed Air Force bases to view UFOs
in action in 1962. The circumstantial evidence
considered so far, does make plausible
Adamski’s claim that Kennedy secretly traveled
to California to meet with extraterrestrials
sometime in 1961/1962. More circumstantial
evidence for such a meeting is found in
Kennedy’s initiative to get the USSR and USA
to cooperate in joint space and lunar missions,

I once knew a guy who, if plied with
enough rounds of bourbon and Coke, would
regale you with the tallest of tall tales.
He's encountered Bigfoot, you see. The
sasquatch in all of its nine-foot-tall, shaggy
glory was as plain as the nose on his face, he'll
say. He's even got a footprint. Well, it's a photo
of a vaguely foot-shaped blob. It might also be
Sir John A. McDonald in profile. I can't really
tell.
And may the Flying Spaghetti Monster
help you if you so much as doubt his word that
a giant ape-man once sat in his backyard and ate
garbage.
"I know what I saw!" he'll say and shoo
you off with a broom.
It's the same all over I suppose. Here in
Niagara we have our own cadre of ghost
hunters, psychics and assorted UFO
buffs who peddle the same nonsense as Bigfoot
aficionados. These are the types wearing "I
want to believe" Xfiles T-shirts and think the
moon landings were faked.
But while venting about believing
improbable things, I will admit a good monster
myth helps ye ole' tourist trade.
Unfortunately, we don't have a
Sasquatch or a Loch Ness Monster. Heck, we
don't even have an Ogopogo or a Blair Witch.
The best we in Niagara have cooked up
is a cougar. Not a giant cougar, or a cougar that
can sing and dance to Ragtime Gal. Just a plain,
black cougar. Or sometimes it's brown. Or tan.
But mostly it's invisible.
It doesn't even have a cool name like
Bagheera, or Cougarific Jones, or Lance. It's not
even THE cougar. In fact as far as urban legends
go, the never-photographed cougar is pretty
lame.
The evidence for the existence of this
feline is only slightly better than the evidence
suggesting that Paul McCartney really isn't the
shoe-less guy on the cover of The Beatles'
Abbey Road album.
The fact of the matter is there has only
ever been one scrap of evidence found to
indicate the possible presence of a cougar --
DNA found in Wainfleet in 2004. But even the
scientist who confirmed it points out nothing
conclusive has been found since.
But why worry about that when there is
public money to burn? The Ministry of Natural
Resources is spending $12,000 on motion and
heat cameras to try and capture images of an
animal there is very little reason to think is
actually out there.
But that doesn't stop people from
insisting it's real. And I fear this fine newspaper
has a hand in it.
Years ago, to my continuing chagrin, we
ran a photo from a freelancer of what is clearly
a chubby house cat waddling about in some tall
grass under the headline: "Panther or fat house
cat?"
For weeks after that, it was all cougars
all the time. People were calling in claiming
they were seeing cougars everywhere. On the
highway. In their backyard. At ladies' night at
the local pub.
But like Bigfoot sightings, there wasn't
any evidence.
Odd, no? I mean, you can go into the
deepest jungles of Africa and photograph the
most elusive predators on Earth, but apparently
cougars can move around Niagara without a
trace. We find cats, dogs, deer and coyotes, but
not a single cougar.
Also odd that in Alberta, where I'm
from, there are no problems finding cougars.
One of the first news stories I wrote was about
a 175-pound cougar that was killing the
livestock of local ranchers.
But then perhaps in Niagara they are
noncorporeal, invisible cougars that subsist on
field mice and pine cones.
The point being that until there is some
solid evidence, our tax dollars can be better
spent elsewhere and we can all take a deep,
rational breath and realize the truth -- there is no
cougar.
Unless we can give him a cool name for
tourists. How does "Niagara: Home of
Snagglepus the Magic Cat" strike you? []

On May 12, 1949, Donald Menzel, a
leading astronomer from Harvard University,
reported seeing a UFO. He was driving through
New Mexico at about 9.30pm when he saw a
small, round, white light low on the horizon,
followed by another identical light alongside.
Both lights grew brighter “as if possibly rising
above a haze layer”, and turned from fuzzy into
sharp focus. Dr Menzel watched the lights for a
few minutes before each light suddenly
disappeared one after the other.
In 1953, though, Menzel wrote Flying
Saucers, the first book to debunk UFOs. In this
he claimed to have explained the 1949 sighting
as a “reflection of the Moon off haze”. And he
reviewed every other significant UFO sighting
since the first flying saucer report in 1947,
explaining them as hoaxes, mirages, weather
balloons or some other “conventional”
phenomenon. In fact, Menzel described UFOs
as a “myth of the space age”.
The weather can, indeed, play some
strange tricks with lights in the sky, especially
when a temperature inversion of warm air
sitting on top of colder air can distort an image
of a star. Most famous was in 1969, when
Governor Jimmy Carter, before he became
President, saw an apparent UFO just after
sunset — a bright light that changed from blue
to red to white. “We were trying to figure out
what in the world it could be, and then it
receded into the distance,” he recalled. But it
was Venus. []

May 17, 2009 these pictures were taken
from a mobile phone camera. They capture a
black disk shaped object that stayed in middle
of the sun for over 2 hours this afternoon. We
first noticed it and took a picture around 12:50
PM and the last picture was taken around 3 PM.
Several times during this encounter we saw 3
military jets flying directly at the object which
remained stationary. We also noticed another
light nearby that you can see changed directions
and always had a nearby halo. You can see the
streak in the sky from the military jets that were
flying in the area.
The photos were taken on Kent's East
Hill. What military jets would spend the
afternoon over Kent and Renton for and what a
large black object would be doing staying
stationary for over 2 hours is a mistery.

distraction and has been blamed on

submarines. A scientist claims he's found the
cause. Our man (who's heard it) listens in...
To the unaffected, it sounds suspiciously
like a case of mass hysteria. It is the stuff of
dark conspiracies, cover-ups and general
spookiness. But to 'sufferers', if that is the right
word, this mysterious throbbing noise, which
never goes away and exists right on the brink of
perception, is real and concrete enough to ruin
lives.
I have only experienced 'The Hum' - at
least, I assume it was The Hum - once. I was
about eight or nine years old, and I remember
becoming aware of a rumbling noise, half-way
between a distant pneumatic drill and a badly
tuned diesel engine. It happened in the dead of
night, and kept me awake for hours.
I opened my window and turned my
head this way and that in a futile attempt to
locate the origin of the sound, which seemed to
be emanating from the end of our quiet street.

They describe it as a persistent, low-
level and low-frequency noise. It is not audible
to everyone and, most importantly, has no
obvious source.
Until now. After exhaustive research, a
doctor in Cambridge says he has finally solved
the mystery.
Unfortunately, few are likely to be
satisfied by his solution (more of which later).
Over the years, dozens of explanations
have been put forward for The Hum. Some
sensible, some mundane, a few downright
crazy. Many have fallen by the wayside.
Either way, The Hum has been the
subject of conspiracy theories galore - and has
driven a few to the edge of madness.
Hums - this is clearly a multiple
phenomenon - come and go. In the Seventies,
the city of Bristol was afflicted, with hundreds
of people complaining of a persistent sound that
caused sleeplessness, headaches and even
nosebleeds.
When a local newspaper asked people to
write in if they had heard the throbbing,
rhythmic sound, nearly 1,000 did so. No official
explanation was ever found.
So what does cause The Hum? It is
generally described as being a low-frequency
sound of a few tens of hertz (around 20 hertz, or
20 vibrations per second, forms the lower limit
of normal human hearing).
This would appear to rule out the most
obvious cause: the ear disorder, tinnitus, which
usually manifests itself as high frequency
'ringing in the ears'.
What's more, many people report that

sensitive or advanced. Which is where we stray
into the dark world of conspiracy theory and
spook story.
Many Hum 'victims' blame covert
military activity, secret submarine
communication devices, nuclear experiments
and even orbiting satellites for the nuisance.
There are even paranoid theories that
The Hum is some sort of sinister psychological
experiment being performed by dark forces in
the government or the security services. Aliens
and UFOs also inevitably stray into the frame.
And some Hum victims are clearly lunatics. I
used to get letters from a man convinced that the
noises he was hearing were the result of a secret
military experiment whereby radio receivers
had been implanted into his brain, a relatively
common delusion in the radar age.
But what does our Cambridge doctor
have to say on the subject? Well, Dr David
Baguley, of Addenbrooke's Hospital in
Cambridge, thinks that in many cases, The Hum
can be explained by boring old oversensitive
hearing.
He says that our hearing has evolved to
become especially acute at times of extreme
danger or stress, times when, quite literally, you
can hear the proverbial pin drop.

Hum. For some cannot be picked up by

HONOBIA — Some 25 to 30
researchers will be braving the southeastern
Oklahoma woods this weekend in search of the
reclusive Bigfoot.
The Kiamichi Mountains provide the
apelike creature a habitat that's rich with deer,
berries, honeysuckle and plenty of woodsy
cover, believers say.
"You could hide an army in there and
never know it," said D.W. Lee of Stilwell,
global director of the Mid-America Bigfoot
Research Center.
In October in Honobia, the researchers
saw "eye shine" from a creature standing about
8 feet tall, he said.
"They would get close enough that the
campfire would shine in their eyes and it would
show green," Lee said.
Like ghost hunters, the Bigfoot
researchers will be equipped with night-vision
goggles and scopes, along with an array of
audio and video equipment. They will record
hours of footage from the trail for viewing after
their trip.
Lee said the creatures typically throw
rocks at them when they're sitting around a
campfire.
"If they wanted to hit you, they would,"
he said. "It's like they just want to see how
you'll react. Other times you may get in areas
where you're not welcome. If you're close to the
little ones — the young Bigfoot — they're
going to make sure you leave."
The only time Lee said he became
fearful in the woods was during a trip to the
Chelsea area in northeastern Oklahoma.
"I saw three groups of Bigfoot going
across a field in front of me," he said.
About a year ago in the Chelsea area,
the researchers poured a cast of a footprint, 15
inches long and 5 inches wide, that they believe
was made by a Bigfoot.
They've photographed other footprints
along logging roads in the Kiamichi Mountains
of southeastern Oklahoma.

track followers are familiar with what they say
are the creature's distinctive screams and
whoops.
Lee said Bigfoot is intelligent and can
mimic the sounds of other animals.
"We do hear a lot of owl calls, but you
can tell it's not an owl because it's like an 800-
pound owl hooting at you," he said.
About five years ago, Lee's group
received a report from a man hunting deer in a
tree stand in the Kiamichi Mountains. It seems
that his pager went off, and after he turned it off,
he heard something in the woods mimicking its
beep-beep sounds.
"When he turned around, he saw
Bigfoot standing there," Lee said. "His words
were that it was a 'big something' that he just
didn't want no part of."
Perhaps Jane Goodall gives skeptics
some pause.
In a 2002 interview with National
Public Radio, the primatologist said she
believes that the creature could exist. She said
she based that assessment on descriptions given
to her by American Indians, who reported two
sightings and described sounds they'd heard.
Some people have dismissed Bigfoot
sightings in Oklahoma as actually black bear
sightings. But unlike bears, Lee said, a Bigfoot
walks upright exclusively and — at 7 to 8 feet
tall — is much taller than a black bear.
"We're not just a bunch of country
hicks," said Lee, a network administrator.
Hundreds of people attend the Honobia
Bigfoot Festival and Conference each year. This
year it will be held Oct. 2-3 and sponsored by

When Josh Buhs sent an e-mail in the
fall of 2006, I was initially more than a little
dubious.
"I am a historian, currently working on a
cultural history of bigfoot," he wrote. "I saw
your recent article, 'I've Always Believed There
Is a Bigfoot,' and liked it very much.
"As it happens, I have just finished a
chapter that concerns Ron Olson, and I was
wondering if you could pass on my e-mail and
home address to him, and tell him I would be
interested in having his reaction to the chapter,"
he added.
He was referring to a Sept. 3, 2006, "Off
the Beaten Path" column about Eugene resident
Ron Olson who, with his father and a friend,
built the bigfoot trap near what is now
Applegate Lake in 1974. As the headline
indicated, Olson was — and is — a bigfoot
believer.
My skepticism was twofold: First, the
big fellow with the size 18 footprint has been
known to attract a few oddballs. Secondly, as
one who has been inching toward completing a
book for years, I know how difficult it is to
finish the marathon.
Turns out my dubiousness was
unfounded.
"Bigfoot: The Life and Times of a
Legend" was published Friday by the
University of Chicago Press. Written by Buhs,
36, of Vacaville, Calif., the 279-page hardback
is available for $29 at a bookstore near you, as
well as at amazon.com. A reviewer's copy
arrived here two weeks ago.
The skillfully written book isn't about
debunking the legend or proving the big guy
exists. Rather, Buhs, whose other book, "The
Fire Ant Wars," was published by the same
printing house in 2004, explores the cultural
phenomenon created by the Sasquatch lore.
Buhs takes us around the world, from
Olson's bigfoot trap on the upper Applegate
River to the search for Yeti in the snowy
Himalayan peaks with Sir Edmund Hillary. You
will read about Roger Patterson, who shot the
grainy film footage of an alleged bigfoot along
Bluff Creek in the Klamath River drainage and
Washington State University professor Grover
Krant, who sought to give gravitas to what
cryptozoologists have dubbed Gigantopithecus
americana.
The stories are invariably interesting,
sometimes strange, often humorous and always
entertaining. It's a good read, particularly if
you've ever camped in a wilderness and
wondered what lurks in the darkness just
beyond the dying campfire light.
The writer, who has a degree in history
and the sociology of science from the
University of Pennsylvania, lets readers make
their own conclusion.
He does note in the preface that he
doesn't believe the big boy exists. Yet you won't
find that bias in reading his book.
"I'm willing to concede people out there
might see something they otherwise can't
explain," he said in a telephone interview
Friday. "I personally don't believe it is a big
hairy beast. But a lot of people are very sincere
about what they've seen.
"There are the hoaxsters out there," he
continued. "But there is also a real core group of
people who are very sincere and earnest, just
trying to understand what their friends have
seen or they have seen themselves."
Reared in California, Buhs recalled first
learning of the bigfoot legend as a youngster.
He also has camped throughout the Northwest.
"The approach I wanted to take was not,
'Yes, it does exist' or 'No, it doesn't,' but to look
at how Americans think about nature and our
ideas about wilderness, particularly in the 19th
century," he said. "I also wanted to look at the
different ways the bigfoot legend has spread. It
is very ubiquitous."
He also explores why there was so much
interest in the creature at different times in our
history, including the 1970s.
"I didn't expect to find this many people
involved or the detailed information that was
out there," he said. "When you get into the
microscopic anatomy of a footprint cast, that's
very specific ... I had a blast writing it."
He is now researching a book about the
Forteans, folks who follow the work of Charles
Hoy Fort, an early 20th-century writer who
devoted his life to phenomena on the thin edge
between fact and fantasy.
"I think that could be very interesting,"

17 different calendars, some of them charting
time accurately over a span of more than ten

drawn global attention since 1987 is called the

Let me be very clear here: Nancy
Lieder, Mark Hazlewood and the rest of these
Planet X people (hereafter referred to as
"PXPs") are completely wrong. No rogue giant
planet is about to destroy the Earth, in May
2003 or otherwise. The webpages on this and
other sites give lots of details, but I thought it
might help if I made a brief synopsis of the
arguments I and others make to debunk this
pseudoscientific silliness. Listed below are the
major points against the claims of the PXPs.

contemplating the Dark Side.
Ancient texts do not discuss the
existence of a tenth planet.
Zechariah Sitchin bases his entire
theory of the existence of a tenth planet on
ancient texts, including Sumerian and biblical
writings. However, he is known to misinterpret
Sumerian, sometimes grossly. His key finding
is based on a seal that shows a diagram that
looks like the solar system, with the Sun at the
center. It appears to have eleven planets around
it. Since Sumerians counted the Sun and Moon
as planets, Sitchin says the extra one must be
some unknown planet. He also says it has aliens
on it who communicated with the ancient
Sumerians.
But there are two major problems with
this. Well, three, if you count having alien
visitations as a problem (and I certainly do). But
ignoring that, there are still two biggies. Sitchin
claims that the picture shows Uranus, Neptune
and Pluto. But the Sumerians didn't have
telescopes, and therefore could only have
known of them if aliens told them about their
existence. But if aliens told them about those
planets, why not about the moons of Jupiter and
Saturn, or Saturn's rings? The seal doesn't show
any of these features. And the Sumerians
thought the Moon and Sun were planets, when
they aren't. Certainly aliens would know that the
Sun and Moon are not planets! Sitchin is
picking and choosing things in the picture to
support his arguments, and ignoring things that
don't support it. That isn't science, it's fantasy.
It's also wrong.
Worse, his interpretation of the picture is
wrong. The Sumerians have an unambiguous
symbol for the Sun: a circle with four triangles
around it like rays, and squiggly lines between
the triangles. That is emphatically not the
symbol in the seal. The symbol used is that of a
bright star, but not the Sun. So even Sitchin's
basic premise is wrong. Michael Heiser, a
Sumerian scholar, outlines all this on his
website.
Conclusion: Sitchin's ideas are wrong,
and so there is no reason to even introduce the
idea of a tenth planet that passes by the Earth.
There is no astronomical indication of
the existence of another large planet
in the inner solar system.
In my opinion, this is the biggest
problem with the Planet X myth. Simply put:
where is it? We don't see it optically, and we
don't see any effects gravitationally.
Look at Jupiter. Literally! It's about ten
times the diameter of the Earth, and it's on
average about 750 million kilometers (450
million miles) away. It is easily visible to the
naked eye, and in fact is usually the fourth or
fifth brightest object in the sky (the Sun, Moon,
and Venus are brighter, and Mars can
sometimes be brighter than Jupiter).
Yet, for Planet X to be here in less then
a decade, it can't be farther than a billion or so
kilometers away. Even at that distance, it would
be one of the brightest objects in the sky. Even
if it were too faint to be seen with the naked
eye, it would still be seen easily even if it were
billions of kilometers away. Remember, tiny
Pluto is 5 billion kilometers out, and can be
easily detected using modern equipment, and
Pluto is way smaller than Planet X is supposed
to be. There is simply no way a big planet so
close to Earth could have escaped astronomers'
detection-- even amateur astronomers, who
even Lieder and Hazlewood must realize have
no reason to lie-- all these decades.

affect their orbits, and we'd see that. We don't.
Some of the Planet X proponents talk about how
the outer planets' orbits are indeed affected, but
they are relying on very old data. In fact, the
planets are exactly where they should be given
the nine planets we know about.
A lot of PXPs talk about a couple of
scientific papers published which talk about
perturbations in comet orbits indicating a
possible tenth planet. I have read both papers,
and found them to be interesting, but unlikely.
They are more speculation than hard science, in
my opinion. But even if they are correct, they
would indicate a planet that is way, way farther
out than Hazlewood and Lieder claim for Planet
X, and in fact would indicate there is no massive
planet closer to the inner solar system. As usual,
by pointing out scientific evidence they think
supports their position, the PXPs are actually
highlighting evidence against them.

Hazlewood is that NASA found the tenth planet
back in 1983, and even announced it. This is
patently untrue. What really happened was that
a satellite used to make astronomical
observations in infrared light found several
objects that were previously unidentified.

made a list of potential sources, including (but
not limited to) a tenth planet. Of course, the
headline in the Washington Post zeroed in on
the planet possibility, but science is generally
not done by headlines. Sure enough, follow-up
observations made later showed clearly that
most of the objects were distant galaxies, and
another was a gas cloud in our own Galaxy. No
planet.
Of course, Hazlewood and his ilk claim
that NASA got wise and quickly covered up the
discovery of the tenth planet, but let's face it,
that claim is pretty dumb. This was a NASA
press conference in the first place, and if they
were this ultra-competent super-secret
organization that Hazlewood makes them out to
be, or even if they were middling-competent
bureaucrats, the press conference wouldn't have
been held in the first place! And at the very
least, the astronomers involved would have
been briefed not to reveal anything secret. The
PXPs want it both ways: they want NASA to be
so good they can change journal articles, web
pages, astronomical catalogs and more with
iron-clad authority, but so bumbling they
couldn't keep two astronomers and a DC
reporter shut up. Puhleeze!
Conclusion: Planet X has no physical
effects, has never been seen, and therefore
doesn't exist.
The Sun is not acting in any way
abnormally.
The PXPs love to scream every time the
Sun undergoes an eruption, whether it's a flare
or coronal mass ejection (or CME for short).
They say that the peak in the 11 year solar cycle
was two to three years ago, and therefore the
Sun should be quiet now. Any eruption is
therefore evidence of effects from Planet X.
This is wrong. The Sun did indeed peak
in the year 2000, but these peaks are not sudden;
they grow and fade slowly, over years. In fact,
each peak actually has two sub-peaks; solar
activity rises, then declines, then rises again a
year or so later, as can be seen in the plot shown
(click on it to bring up a bigger version of the
image). We are just now finishing up the second
peak, and as you can see we should expect
plenty of activity on the Sun. I talked to a couple
of solar astronomers, and they both told me that
the flares and CMEs in the second peak tend to
be more violent than in the first, so we actually
expect more energetic activity in the second
peak, that is, now.
The PXPs neglect to mention the history
of the Sun, and just want you to think about
what's happening right now. By doing that, it
makes it seem like the Sun is undergoing all
sorts of undulations, when in fact it's doing
exactly what is expected of it. The Sun is in no
way acting abnormally, despite their claims.
Conclusion: the Sun is acting
normally, and its behavior does not support the
existence of Planet X.
There are not more earthquakes than
normal.
This claim is similar to the one about the
Sun. The PXPs say that earthquakes are on the
rise, which indicates effects by Planet X. Every
time there is a large earthquake, the PXPs say
this is evidence for Planet X.
This is wrong. The table displayed here
(click on it to bring up a bigger version of the
image) shows earthquake activity over the past
13 years. The quakes are divided by strength
(vertically) and year (horizontally). The data are
complete for 2002, meaning every earthquake
measured is there.
If Planet X is nearly here, then you'd
expect to see an increase of major earthquake
activity over time, with 2002 having the most.
Surprise! It doesn't. In fact, 2002 is usually
average or even below average in the number of
major earthquakes for a given magnitude that
occurred.
You may notice that the actual total
number of earthquakes does appear to increase
with time, but that is not because there are more
earthquakes. It's because we're getting better at
detecting them! As instruments become more
sensitive, more earthquakes are detected. Note
that the increase is mostly in the number of
small quakes, which are usually harder to
detect. Better instrumentation naturally detects
smaller quakes more easily, increasing the total
number found without changing the number of
big quakes found, because those are easy to
detect and we catch them all with less sensitive
equipment. Supporting this is the last line of the
graph, which shows only a few very weak
earthquakes in the 0-1 range. There are probably
more of those than any other earthquake, but are
far harder to detect unambiguously (a car
driving by might look just like a magnitude 0.1
earthquake to a seismograph). The United States
Geological Survey has a webpage describing
exactly this finding. So, if Planet X is real and
affecting us, it must be suppressing earthquakes,
not causing them.
There were two big earthquakes in
January 2003, both over 7 on the Richter scale.
The PXPs went nuts about them. But look at the
plot! Two magnitude 7 earthquakes in one
month means you'd expect 24 in a year, right?
Well, you can see that 24 magnitude 7
earthquakes per year is just about right given the
earthquake history. So once again, by bringing
this data to everyone's attention, the Planet X
people are shooting themselves in the foot.
Conclusion: there no more
earthquakes than usual, and therefore
earthquakes cannot be used to support the
existence of Planet X.
There has been a lot of weird weather
lately.
Another big claim is that there has been
a lot of unusual weather going on; tornadoes,
droughts, storms, etc. Like earthquakes and
solar flares, every time it rains it seems like it
must be due to Planet X.
First off, surprise! The weather isn't all
that weird. We are coming off of an El Nino,
which is a weather pattern that disrupts climates
across the world. Also, we are now into
springtime, when things like tornadoes are
common. Seeing tornadoes in Texas and
Oklahoma is not only not unusual, but is
expected!
There have been some records broken
this year, but there are weather records broken
every year. This is exactly the same sort of bad
logic used in the earthquake argument, and is
just as wrong. Even a cursory web search yields
lots of pages about the odd weather we get as El
Nino departs.
And even if it were true, how could the
weather possibly be to tied to an incoming
planet? If you assume electromagnetic forces,
we'd see huge changes in our aurora before we'd
see changes in the weather, and we see no such
changes. If it were gravitational, then there
would be countless other, far larger effects.
Long before the weather were disrupted, we'd
see changes in the Moon's orbit that were so big
they would be unmistakable. They would
certainly throw off the timings of eclipses, and
we'll see on May 15th that there will be a lunar
eclipse right on schedule.
Conclusion: the weather isn't any
weirder than it usually is at the end of an El
Nino, so the claims of weird weather are
wrong.

Brown dwarfs are not at all the way
Planet X people describe.
A brown dwarf is an object that is
something bigger than a planet, but smaller than
a star. An object with more than about 0.077
times the Sun's mass (about 80 times Jupiter's
mass) will ignite nuclear fusion in the core,
making it a full-blown star. The lower mass
limit is somewhat less clear, but we can safely
say that Jupiter is below it. Even if we call
Jupiter a brown dwarf, it is still far larger than
what Nancy Lieder and Mark Hazlewood say is
the mass and diameter of Planet X. Nancy says
it's 4 times the radius of Earth (Jupiter is 11
times Earth's radius) and about 20 times as
massive (Jupiter is 310 times as massive as the
Earth). Hazlewood's claims are similar. Neither
of them describe anything even close to a brown
dwarf.
Also, even an old, dim brown dwarf puts out
light. A typical dim brown dwarf would still be
a very bright object if it were anywhere near the
inner solar system, or even located way out
beyond Pluto. I even show my math! Remember
too that a brown dwarf will still reflect sunlight
(like Jupiter and the other planets do), making it
even brighter. So if Planet X were a brown
dwarf, it would have been obvious in the sky
years ago.
Using the term to describe Planet X is
simply wrong. I suspect they might use the term
to sound more scientific, but again, as always,
they wind up making themselves look foolish.
Conclusion: Nancy Lieder and Mark
Hazlewood do not understand brown dwarfs at
all, and saying Planet X is a brown dwarf is
actually further evidence that they don't know
what they are talking about, and that Planet X
doesn't exist.
Observatories are not being closed
suspiciously.
Many of the PXPs (notably Mr.
Hazlewood) have been claiming that
observatories around the world are being closed
"suspiciously" (ever noticed how nothing can
just happen in a conspiracy theory?). They
claim to have a long list of them, though I have
yet to see them actually post such a list. They do
mention such observatories as Griffith in Los
Angeles. Why are they closing? Because, claim
the PXPs, they don't want the public to see
Planet X through these observatories. If the
public demands to see this planet through the
powerful telescopes, then the jig, as they say, is
up. So the government is closing them down.
But this makes no sense whatsoever. First, as I
have shown, Planet X, if it existed, would be a
pretty bright object. If we believe Nancy Lieder,
then it should be so bright it would be visible
even if you wear sunglasses. Mark Hazlewood
claims it's still far away, but even if it were years
away, it would be easily spotted in a telescope
of very modest size; certainly in the range of
thousands of amateur instruments. So closing
public observatories makes no sense.
Moreover, the only way to keep this
quiet would be to close all telescopes with
public access. Every single one. Yet there are
hundreds of observatories still open. I recently
used some 'scopes at the Buehler Observatory in
Fort Lauderdale, for example, when it was open
for public night. Chabot Space and Science
Center in Oakland, California, has several
telescopes the public can use. The list goes on
for hundreds of observatories that are not only
open, but actively showing the skies to the
public.
I expect PXPs will then claim that the
observatories remaining open simply won't
show Planet X to the public. Then why close
any at all? Again, it makes no sense. Either all
observatories get closed, or none does. They
might claim that only observatories with big
enough 'scopes were shut down, but that's not
true. Plenty of observatories with pretty big
'scopes remain open.
Conclusion: Observatories are indeed
closing, but only for renovation. Plenty of
observatories with public access and large
telescopes remain open. Therefore there is no
government conspiracy to close telescopes
down to prevent people from seeing Planet X.
The pictures that have been posted
are either outright fakes or being
misinterpreted.
Nancy Lieder has several pictures on her
website which claim to be of Planet X. She is
wrong. Many of her pictures are clear fakes, like

this one, which is so easy to reproduce in photo-
manipulation software like Photoshop that
people have actually gone out and done it. In
fact, the person who made the fake linked above
has admitted it, and has even shown how he did
it!
Some are such simple misinterpretations
that it's hard to believe people don't understand
what they are seeing. There are several
examples of what have been called "second
suns", which supposedly show Planet X as a
reddish disk near the Sun. Here's a good one
from Ms. Lieder's site. But it's clearly an
internal reflection; the sunlight bouncing off the
lenses inside the camera. The giveaway is how
it moves from picture to picture as the camera
itself is moved and rotated. A regular
contributor to the Bad Astronomy Bulletin
Board who goes by the name "Deepspacegirl"
has a website which shows a similar picture
taken in 2002! Obviously, it's not Planet X.
Some of Ms. Lieder's acolytes have
gone out and taken digital images of the night
sky through telescopes, and claimed to have
found Planet X. They are wrong. Digital images
are not as simply processed as a roll of film, and
in fact takes weeks of training to understand the
details. I studied digital cameras for years
working on Hubble data, and have a pretty good
insight into this. The basic problem with Ms.
Lieder's images is in how the calibration data
were processed. Unlike a point-and-shoot
camera, an astronomical detector needs lots of
pictures taken under controlled circumstances
so that you can understand what is real in the
image and what isn't. I bet you can see where
this is going.
When charged particles hit an electronic
detector, they leave a bright spot in the image.
These kinds of particles are produced by the
Sun, and can hit the detector in the camera.

numerous occasions that Planet X would be
naked-eye visible months before its passage, yet
she also claims it appears as a faint dot in the
images she herself supplies. Which is it? She
says lots of contradictory things, which is yet
another good reason to disbelieve what she is
saying (another example, not to be indelicate, is
that she said (through her channeled aliens) that
the then-missing Washington intern Chandra
Levy was alive and well and living in Mexico.
Ms. Levy's remains were found shortly
thereafter in Washington, DC).
Remember, we are dealing with people
with zero experience in astronomy, let alone
astronomical imaging. They are easily fooled;
don't forget that Mr. Hazlewood mistook a
Hubble image of Jupter's moon Io for an image
of Planet X! So you might want to think twice
before believing what they say. They don't want
you to think twice; from the evidence I have
seen, they don't want you to think at all.
Conclusion: fake pictures and real
ones that are misinterpreted do not support the
existence of Planet X.

many physicists and astronomers, we have a
pretty good idea of how it's probably going to
end. Superstitious myths about our origins and
ultimate demise still abound among the
religious and anti-scientific secularists, but they
do little damage to the progress of science.
Those doing science either reject the religious
myths of our ancestral storytellers as products
of creative minds that tried to understand the
universe using little more than their
imaginations and the feedback they got from
equally ignorant folks sitting around a campfire,
or they have figured out a way to interpret the
myths to make them seem compatible with
modern science. Those who attempt to force
modern science into the mold of their religious
myths are not doing science and are little more
than a constant nuisance.
(Mythmakers still sit around the
campfire telling tales to their ignorant
audiences. Some of these mythmakers are as
ignorant as their camp followers. Some are
scientists trying to lure camp followers to
donate money to their implausible or impossible
projects, like the free energy hucksters. They
call it an investment, but it's a donation. I think
Bob Park said that.)
Many myths report doomsday events,
but they usually provide no way to test their
claims. If they do, the claims don't stand up to
scientific scrutiny. When scientists claim that
there have already been doomsday events on
Earth, such as being hit with a giant meteoroid
some 65 million years ago, they produce
evidence and counter-evidence, and argue until
the claim is either rejected or accepted by the
majority of those in the field. When scientists
tell us that we could get hit again by another
huge object from outer space, we take them
seriously and do not wonder if their revelation
came from an all-knowing being from the Great
Beyond. In fact, there have been several mass
extinctions of species (more than 99% of all the
species that have ever existed on Earth are
extinct). We could be rendered extinct from
solar flares, gamma ray bursts, super novae, or
black holes, to name just a few of the ways
nature could get rid of us. Our whole galaxy
could be swallowed up by some other galaxy.
We could be blasted by another huge meteoroid.
We could see our species depleted to the
(metaphorical) Adam and Eve stage from a
massive plague caused by the release of some
mighty microbe or by massive poisoning of our
air, water, and food as globalization leads to
universal deregulation of all industries in an
attempt to expand world markets indefinitely.
We could blow up the planet with nuclear
bombs. The odds of any of these things
happening are small, but they are not
impossible. Whether you should worry about
them is up to you. But you might want to think
twice before scaring your children into thinking
that the end is at hand. One plausible scenario is
that our sun dies and the planet becomes a
frozen mass some five billion years from now.
Nobody will be around to observe it, however,
since all life on Earth will have been
extinguished millions or billions of years
earlier.
(My sage and cheerful editor, John
Renish, adds: It is more likely to be the pre-
human or pre-biotic world than the Adam & Eve
world, should some of these things happen.*
Astronomers generally believe that the Sun will
expand to a tenuous red giant whose outer
atmosphere might well engulf the Earth before
shrinking to a white dwarf. If it expands
enough, the Earth will spiral into the
atmosphere, but in any case will be burnt to a
cinder. At least we wouldn't have to worry about
freezing to death. On the other hand, nobody
who reads your site will ever have to worry
about something that happens in 5 billion years.
Most species die out in a few tens of million
years at most, so none of your readers or their
descendants will likely see the end, either.)
Most end-times doomsayers seem to be
unmoved by the enormous amount of scientific
data available to anyone truly interested in the
end of the universe. Instead, when an event
seems to them like an end-time event—such as
the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center
and the Pentagon on 11 September 2001, or the
recent (October 2008) collapse of world
banking—they turn to the Bible or someone like
Nostradamus for guidance. There have always
been people who see catastrophic events as
signs that the end is near, yet an understanding
of history and science should console us: every
generation has seen catastrophic events, some
generated by nature and some generated by our
fellow human beings. There has never been a
time when things weren't uncertain and
dangerous for human groups, from families to
tribes to nations.
saviors
Associated with some doomsday beliefs
is the notion that before the end comes some
sort of savior will arrive to warn everybody.
These saviors have been many, but the best-
known is Jesus of Nazareth (or Bethlehem)
known as the Christ and Savior to a billion or so
Christians. Jesus seems clearly to have taught
that the end of the world and the Second
Coming was at hand. That was 2,000 years ago.
Some are still waiting for the messiah. In the
meantime, several messiahs have come and
gone.
In the seventeenth-century, for example,
it was widely believed in England that the end
of the world was at hand. One of the leading
rabbis of the time and a teacher of Spinoza,
Menasseh Ben Israel, let it be known that 1666
was the year the messiah would come.
According to tradition, before that could happen
the Jews had to be spread to the "four corners of

the earth." Ben Israel convinced Cromwell to
let the Jews back into England on these
grounds. Perhaps he hinted to the
megalomaniacal Cromwell that he himself was
the chosen one. In any case, several people
announced they were the messiah, but we'll
mention just one: Sabbatai Zevi (1626-1676?).
According to another Jewish mystical
tradition, the year of doom was predicted to be
1648, the year Sabbatai announced his
messianic nature. His power grew as more and
more Jews and Christians joined in the chorus
singing the praises of the new messiah and the
glorious end of all things human about to come.
Their joy turned to sadness, however, when, in
1666, their hero traveled to Constantinople and
was arrested. His messianic nature was
challenged and it wasn't long before he
converted to Islam. As is always the case when
a prophet or messiah is shown to be wrong, the
faith of some of his followers became even
stronger. They rationalized that the conversion
was part of Sabbatai's messianic plan to bring
Jews to Islam or Islam to Jews or maybe both.
He was eventually banished and died alone in
Montenegro. Even so, there are people alive
today who await Sabbatai's second coming.*&*
In the nineteenth century, the Baptist
preacher William Miller (1782–1849) said the
world would end on 22 October 1844. Miller is
credited with being the inspiration behind the
Adventist movement of the 1830s and 1840s in
North America and other movements that
emphasized Biblical prophecy. Being wrong is
rarely considered a fault by the faithful. Miller's
followers called the failure of the world to end
as predicted "The Great Disappointment." A
Millerite named Hiram Edson wrote: "Our
fondest hopes and expectations were blasted,
and such a spirit of weeping came over us as I
never experienced before....We wept, and wept,
till the day dawn." Miller thought there might
be some error in the Biblical chronology, but he
never gave up his belief that the Second
Coming was imminent. He wanted to keep that
happy thought alive, as does preacher Ronald
Weinland, who predicts the world will end in
2010. If so, that would undoubtedly upset those
who think they have until 2012.

The continued popularity of doomsday beliefs
is illustrated by the popularity of the Left
Behind series of books and films, based on a
Biblical interpretation that involves something
called the rapture. Millions of copies of the
novels have been sold. And despite the
preposterous nature of the belief, millions of
people apparently expect to have their bodies
separated from their clothes and jewelry as they
are teleported to some supernatural dimension.

As noted above, however, not all
doomsayers are religious prophets. Some look
to science as the likely cause of the end of the
world. I grew up during the so-called Cold War,
when the United States and the former Soviet
Union tried to outpace each other in developing
nuclear weapons. What began as a race to
develop the most powerful weapons of mass
destruction in history gradually gave way to a
philosophical position known as nuclear
deterrence. Even though both sides eventually
had enough weapons to destroy our species
many times over, neither side would use its
weapons because to do so meant extinction for
them as well. Now the great fear is that nuclear
material will get into the hands of terrorists or a
rogue nation like Iran, which might use the
weapon against Israel. Some end-times
doomsayers might long for such a day, because
they believe that Israel will be the site of the last
battle on Earth, at Armageddon, mentioned
above. In fact, despite the widespread
destruction terrorists or Iran might cause, it is
unlikely that they will bring about the end of the
world. In any case, if they do, the irony will be
that the only reason some obscure passage in
one book of the Bible had anything to do with
the end of the world is that some people, in their
zest for the end of life on Earth, hastened the
event by rationalizing that their bad behavior
was God's will.
A recent example of the belief that
science will bring about the end of the world
concerns the Large Hadron Collider (LHC),
buried in the mountains on the Swiss/French
border. Before it was turned on, some non-
scientists feared it would create a black hole that
would devour us. A lawyer in Hawaii named
Walter Wagner sounded the alarm. According to
Bob Park, Wagner "read far too much science
fiction as a youth" and "fantasizes that he is a
physicist by virtue of an undergraduate biology
degree with a minor in physics." Wagner
worries that the LHC is "a doomsday machine
that ... is posed to destroy the world by creating
a black hole." How? By smashing particles into
one another. Scientists aren't too worried, since
nature has been smashing particles into one
another on Earth and on the Moon for billions of
years with much greater energy than the LHC
will be able to muster. So far no black holes
have occurred on either the Earth or the Moon,
and last I checked, both were still floating in
space with one orbiting the other.
Some people think that the attraction of
doomsday thoughts is linked to the desire to
find meaning and significance in life.*
Apparently, some people's lives seem worthless
unless they can die and live some other sort of
existence in a dream world populated by spirits
who spend eternity worshipping their maker. I
think we can safely ignore the religious end-
times doomsayers.
The same can't be said for all those who
warn us of impending doom if we don't change
our ways. Some of our behaviors may turn out
to lead to truly catastrophic destruction of our
planet and our species. Nobody can see that far
into the future, however, to know for certain
which of the doomsayers are right. We should
be able to weed out the Chicken Littles like
Richard Noone and Walter Wagner rather easily
and without much controversy. The task is more
difficult when evaluating the claims of those
who see a future of catastrophic destruction
from climate change, genetic engineering,
various forms of pollution, or depletion of
natural resources. We have to be careful of the
bandwagon effect from consensus viewpoints,
as well as of contrarian claims masquerading as
significant objections to the consensus. There
will never be universal consensus among
scientists and other informed people regarding
these controversial issues. Any action taken will
have to be based on probability and carry with it
some degree of uncertainty. We need fear being
wrong much less than we need fear having ideas
stifled because they don't fit with someone's
political agenda. We may make the right
decisions for the wrong reasons, but that hope is
not a principle the future of our planet should
depend on.
HEAVEN'S GATE
Christian / UFO believers
Heaven's Gate is a destructive,
doomsday cult centered in California. 21
women and 18 men voluntarily committed
suicide in three groups on three successive days
starting on 1997-MAR-23. Most were in their
40's; the rest covered an age range of 26 to 72.
1 Two months later, two additional members,
Charles Humphrey and Wayne Cooke attempted
suicide in a hotel room a few miles from the
Rancho Santa Fe mansion; Cooke succeeded.
Humphrey tried again in the Arizona desert
during 1998-FEB and was successful.
"Heaven's Gate" was the latest of three
organizations founded by Marshall Herff
Applewhite and Bonnie "Ti" Lu Trusdale
Nettles, a.k.a. "The Two." The first was Human
Individual Metamorphosis (HIM) which they
organized in 1975. They traveled to the
Colorado desert to wait for the arrival of a UFO.
None came. Bonnie Nettles died of cancer in
1985. Applewhite organized a new group called
Total Overcomers Anonymous or "TOA" in
1993. They placed an ad in USA Today,
announcing that the Earth's present civilization
was about to be "recycled." Applewhite
originally went by the nickname "Bo", and more
recently was called "Do" (pronounced "Doe").
Marshall moved to San Diego County CA with
the group, now renamed "Heaven's Gate", and
lived on to become one of the 39 suicides.
They followed a syncretistic religion,
combining elements of Christianity with
unusual beliefs about the nature of UFOs. They
interpreted passages from the four gospels and
the book Revelation as referring to UFO
visitation. In particular, they emphasized a story
in Revelation which described two witnesses
who are killed, remained dead for 3 1/2 days,
were revived and taken up into the clouds. They
look upon earth as being in the control of evil
forces, and perceived themselves as being
among the elite who would attain heaven. They
held a profoundly dualistic belief of the soul as
being a superior entity which is only housed

temporarily in a body. Applewhite said that
bodies were only "the temporary containers of
the soul...The final act of metamorphosis or
separation from the human kingdom is the
'disconnect' or separation from the human
physical container or body in order to be
released from the human environment."
They believe that about 2000 years ago,
a group of extra-terrestrials came to earth from
the Kingdom of Heaven (the "Next Level").
One of these was "Do". He was given
instructions by "Ti", his female companion,
whom he referred to as his "Heavenly Father."
He left his body behind, transported to Earth in
a space-ship, and incarnated (moved into) a
human body, that of Jesus Christ. A second
group of extra-terrestrials returned to earth,
starting in the 1920's. Do was the Captain of this
expedition; Ti was the Admiral. They each
moved into a human body, but somehow
became scattered. Do and Ti held public
meetings to disseminate their beliefs. They were
pleasantly surprised to find that most of their
converts were the long-lost crew members.
Members called themselves brother and
sister; they looked upon themselves as monks
and nuns; they lived communally in a large,
rented San Diego County (CA) home which
they called their monastery. Most members had
little contact with their families of origin or with
their neighbors. Many followed successful
professional careers before entering the group.
Some abandoned their children before joining.
They were free to leave at any time. They
dressed in unisex garments: shapeless black
shirts with Mandarin collars, and black pants.
They were required commit themselves to a
celibate life. Eight of the male members,
including Do, submitted to voluntary castration.
This seems to have been a form of preparation
for their next level of existence: in a life that
would be free of gender, sexual identity and
sexual activity.
The group supported themselves
through a commercial effort called Higher
Source which designed WWW pages for a
profit. They also used the Internet as a
recruitment tool; they have a site called
Heaven's Gate. On their site, Applewhite
(calling himself the "Present Representative")
drew parallels between himself and the spirit
from Heaven that occupied the body of Jesus
Christ. Their main page says: "As was promised
- the keys to Heaven's Gate are here again in Ti
and Do (The UFO Two) as they were in Jesus
and His Father, 2000 years ago". They
discussed their task is "to work individually on
our personal overcoming and change, in
preparation for entering the Kingdom of
Heaven." Their web site was taken over by the
FBI, but some individuals were able to
download the site files and create mirrors at
various locations.
Marshall Herff Applewhite was gay.
There are rumors that he had one or more affairs
with male students when he was a music
teacher. He is believed to have checked himself
in to a hospital over two decades ago in order to
overcome his homosexual feelings. This
occurred when many therapists believed that a
person's sexual orientation could be changed.
Needless to say, the therapy was unsuccessful.

One theory being proposed is that he
was unable to accept his sexual orientation
because of the homophobia that he had
adsorbed during his youth. This motivated him
to live an celibate life and to create a group
which also suppressed their sexual behavior.
Another theory is that among UFO groups,
there is a widespread belief that extra-
terrestrials have no vocal cords, an atrophied
digestive system and no sexual organs. This is
symbolic of three common religious disciplines:
silence, fasting and celibacy. Perhaps
Applewhite was attempting to emulate both the
UFO inhabitants and ancient Christian tradition.
In common with many other UFO
groups, they believe that UFOs are inter-stellar
space ships operated by extra-terrestrial beings
who are attempting to bring humanity to a
higher level of knowledge. However, they have
a belief not shared by other UFO groups: that by
committing suicide together at the correct time,
they will leave their containers (bodies) behind.
The soul goes to sleep until it is "replanted" in
another container. Eventually, the soul will be
grafted onto a representative of the "level above
human." The latter will be on-board a UFO
space ship such as the one that they believe is
currently hidden behind the Hale-Bopp comet.
A video tape taken shortly before their suicides
showed them to be excited about the future. The
timing of the suicide was apparently triggered
by the arrival of Easter, and by the closest
approach to earth of the comet, which they
regarded as a celestial "marker". The timing was
apparently unrelated to the Spring Equinox of
MAR-20. They feared persecution, death,
arrest, physical torture or psychological torture
while they remained on earth. They felt that this
persecution would come from outside their
group - either from "some irate individual or
from "the powers that control this world." There
is one report that the group had a large cache of
weapons and ammunition.
A couple of the surviving members of the group
who did not "leave" have been maintaining their
web site at http://www.heavensgate.com and
distributing materials and information that the
group left behind. During the 1980's the group
made over 500 audio tapes of their secluded
classroom teachings. They also made 11 video
tapes and wrote a large anthology of their
teachings. The survivors have digitized over
200 hours of those audio tapes, and about 20
hours of Video material and stored the entire
archive on three CD-ROM's which can be
played on a computer using the RealPlayer
technology. They feel it is important to offer this
world a permanent record of this groups
activities. They are making the CD's themselves
available at no charge, asking only that the
shipping charges be covered by the recipient.

TRADITION)
The International Chivalric Order Solar
Tradition was a destructive, doomsday cult
founded by Luc Jouret in 1984. It absorbed the
Foundation Golden Way led by Joseph Di
Mambro (1926-1995). While Jouret assumed
much of the public leadership, Dimambro
convinced members that he was a member of
the 14th Century Christian Order of the Knights
Templar during a previous life and that his
daughter Emanuelle was "the cosmic child."
Together, Jouret and Dimambro convinced
followers that they would lead them after death
to a planet which revolves around the star
Sirius. 1 They regard death as an illusion and
that life continues on other planets. Solar
Temple groups were organized in Quebec,
Canada, as well as in Australia, Switzerland,
and other countries. They follow a form of
Christianity mixed with New-Age philosophy,
homeopathic medicine and high finance. Jouret
believed himself to be Christ. He ran into legal
difficulties in Canada and was convicted of
illegally possessing gun silencers.
The leadership felt that the Solar Temple
was being persecuted by various governments.
They anticipated the imminent end of the world
due to an environmental catastrophe, and felt
that they were to play a major role in the
collapse. They decided that some members
should leave the earth prematurely and "transit"
to a better world. Fire forms an important part of
their belief. They believe that the world will end
in fire. In order for them to transit to another
world, they must die in a fire.
For many months prior to the
murder/suicides, rumors of financial
mismanagement had circulated within the Solar
Temple. An infant, aged three months, was
killed in 1994-OCT at their Canadian site by
driving a wooden stake through his heart.
Former group members explained that Di
Mambro ordered the killing because the baby
was believed to be the Anti-Christ described in
the Bible. A few days later, Di Mambro and
twelve followers had a ritual Last Supper
together. A few days later, mass suicides and
murders were conducted at two villages in
Switzerland and in Morin Heights, a ski resort
north of Montreal, Quebec. 15 inner circle
members (called the "awakened") committed
suicide by the use of poison. 30 (called the
"immortals") were killed by bullets or
smothering. 8 others (called the "traitors") were
also killed.
On 1995-NOV-16, close to winter
solstice, 16 of the remaining members of the
group disappeared from their homes in France
and Switzerland. Four left notes which hinted at
a second mass suicide and expressing a desire to
"see another world". 13 adults and 3 children
were later found dead in a remote forest on the
Vergers plateau, in southeast France.
Investigators concluded on 1996-NOV-15 that
at least four of the 16 did not die willingly.
Three were children. The fourth, Ute Verona,
34, had her jaw fractured before she died; this
indicates a struggle had occurred. Most had
been given sleep-inducing drugs. During the
trial of Solar Temple leader Michel Tabachnik,
French magistrate Luc Fontaine stated that two
members -- policeman Jean-Pierre Lanchet and
architect Andre Friedli -- shot the others,
including three children aged 18 months, two
years and four years. The two poured gasoline
over their bodies, set them on fire, shot
themselves and fell into the flames. 2
Five additional adult members, and
three teenage children apparently tried to
committed suicide on the day of the spring
equinox 1997-MAR-20, in St. Casimir, Quebec,
Canada. The attempt failed due to faulty
equipment. The teenage sons and daughter of
one of the couples convinced their parents that
they wanted to live. They were allowed to leave,
while the adults made their second, successful,
attempt to burned down the house with
themselves in it. Four of their bodies were
arranged in the form of a cross. The teens were
found drugged and disoriented, but otherwise
safe, in a nearby building. A note was found
there which described the group belief that
death on earth leads to a transit to a new planet
where their lives would continue.
Members of this religious group appear
to synchronize their mass murders/suicides to
follow shortly after the solstices and equinoxes.
The Quebec police carefully monitored the
Queze family during the summer solstice in
1996. But there was no unusual activity at that
time, or following the 1996 fall equinox in
September or winter solstice in December. So,
the deaths just after the spring equinox came as
a surprise to the authorities.
The police decided on 1997-APR-25 to
not charge the three teen-age survivors of the St.
Casimir mass suicide with arson. They are aged
13, 14 and 16. Although they triggered the
incendiary device, they were under the
influence of sedatives at the time, and had been
psychologically affected by living with
members of the Solar Temple group. Other
factors considered by the prosecutor were that
they tried to persuade the adults to not commit
suicide, and that they chose life for themselves.
The Solar Temple group continues to
exist; it is believed to have over 30 surviving
members in Quebec and from 140 to 500
worldwide. Additional mass murders and
suicides in Quebec, France or Switzerland are
possible following future solstices and/or
equinoxes near the end of March, June,
September and December. The Canadian police
are limited by the country's Charter of Rights
and Freedoms; they cannot investigate religious
groups that are registered as such with the
government. They can only investigate
individuals.

the brain, which fire both when a person
engages in an activity or merely witnesses
someone else who is engaged in the same
action.
Researchers suggest that when we see a
homeless person begging on the street or an
emaciated child in Darfur, we feel emotionally
moved because we are hardwired to directly
share their experience. Thus many experts
contend that mirror neurons form the physical
basis for altruism, empathy and compassion.
Vilayanur Ramachandran, director of the Center
for Brain and Cognition at University of
California-San Diego, says, "Mirror neurons
dissolve the barrier between you and someone
else." Ramachandran therefore calls them
"Gandhi neurons."
Others disagree. Alison Gopnik, a
developmental psychologist at University of
California-Berkeley's Institute of Cognitive and
Brain Sciences, considers mirror neurons a
myth. She thinks their significance "is blown
way out of proportion." Huge ensembles of
different kinds of neurons are involved in any
cognition, she says. "The idea that a kind of
neuron alone could explain empathy or behavior
or self-consciousness simply makes no sense.
It's just as likely that those neurons are
mirroring because people a re imitating each
other and feeling empathy, not the other way
around." Let's look further.
Experts say that in order for mirror
neurons to fire and trigger empathy and
compassion, an individual must see the
suffering person. But this is a shortsighted view
(no pun intended), because it cannot account for
instances of profound empathy and compassion
in which vision or any other physical sense
plays no role.
Consider the experience of Larry
Kincheloe, MD, an obstetrician-gynecologist in
Oklahoma City. I received a remarkable letter
from him, in which he described how
premonitions and bodily sensations sometimes
set the stage for compassionate, empathic
patient care. His experiences have led him to
propose a new field he calls "intuitive
obstetrics."
After completing his training in
obstetrics and gynecology, Kincheloe joined a
very traditional medical group and practiced for
about four years without any unusual events.
Then one Saturday afternoon he received a call
from the hospital that a patient of his was in
early labor. He gave routine orders, and since
this was her first baby he assumed that delivery
would be hours away. While raking leaves, he
experienced an overwhelming feeling that he
had to go to the hospital. He immediately called
labor and delivery and was told by the nurse that
everything was going fine; his patient was only
five centimeters dilated and delivery was not
expected for several more hours.
Even with this reassurance, the feeling
got stronger and Kincheloe began to feel an
aching pain in the center of his chest. He
described it as similar to the feeling one has at
sixteen years old and loses their first love -- an
achingly sad, melancholy sense. The more he
tried to ignore the sensation the stronger it grew,
until it reached the point where he felt he was
drowning. By this time he was desperate to get
to the hospital. He jumped into his car and sped
away. As he neared the hospital he began to feel
better. When he walked onto the labor unit,
there was an overwhelming sense of relief.
When he reached the labor and delivery
area, the nurse was just walking out of his
patient's labor room. When she asked why he
was there, Kincheloe honestly admitted that he
did not know, only that he felt he was needed
and that his place was with his patient. She gave
him a strange look and told him that she had just
checked the woman and that she was only seven
centimeters dilated. At that moment a cry came
from the labor room. He rushed to the room just
in time to deliver a healthy infant. Afterward,
when the nurse asked how he had known to
come to the hospital after being told that
delivery was hours away, he had no answer.
After that day, Kincheloe started paying
attention to his feelings. He's learned to trust
them. Having experienced these intuitive
sensations hundreds of times, he routinely acts
on them. Usually by the time he gets a call from
labor and delivery, he is already getting dressed
or is in his car on the way to the hospital. He
often answers the phone by saying, "I know. I
am on my way," knowing that it is labor and
delivery calling him to come in. This is now
such a common occurrence among the labor and
delivery staff that they use his chest sensations

as a clinical tool in predicting when his patients
will deliver.
Dr. Kincheloe's experiences suggest that
physical sensations can mediate empathic
connections with others, beyond the range of
the physical senses. These physical symptoms
are like psychic cell phones uniting a distant
individual who is in need with someone else.
A classic example, reported by the
English social critic John Ruskin (1819-1900),
involved Arthur Severn, the well-known
landscape painter. Severn awoke early one
morning and went to the nearby lake for a sail.
His wife Joan, who remained in bed, was
suddenly awakened by the feeling of a severe,
painful blow to the mouth, of no apparent cause.
Shortly thereafter her husband Arthur returned,
holding a cloth to his bleeding mouth. He
reported that the wind had freshened abruptly
and caused the tiller to hit him in the mouth,
almost knocking him from the boat at the
estimated time his wife felt the blow.
Mathematician-statistician Douglas
Stokes reported a similar instance in 2002.
When he was teaching a course on
parapsychology at the University of Michigan,
one of his students reported that his father was
knocked off a bench one day by an "invisible
blow to the jaw." Five minutes later his dad
received a call from a local gymnasium where
his wife was exercising, informing him that she
had broken her jaw on a piece of fitness
equipment.
The late psychiatrist lan Stevenson, of
the University of Virginia, has investigated
scores of comparable instances in which distant,
emotionally close individuals experienced
similar physical symptoms. Most involved
parents and children, spouses, siblings, twins,
lovers, and very close friends. Again, the
common thread seems to be the emotional
bondedness and empathy experienced by the
separated persons.

In a typical example, a mother was
writing a letter to her daughter, who had
recently gone away to college. For no obvious
reason her right hand began to burn so severely
she had to put down her pen. She received a
phone call less than an hour later informing her
that her daughter's right hand had been severely
burned by acid in a laboratory accident, at the
same time that she, the mother, had felt the
burning pain.
In another case, a woman suddenly
doubled over, clutching her chest in severe pain,
saying, "Something has happened to Nell, she
has been hurt." Two hours later the sheriff
arrived to inform her that Nell, her daughter,
had been involved in an auto accident, and that
a piece of the steering wheel had penetrated her
chest.
These events occur in the context of
emotional closeness, empathy, compassion, and
love. They do not depend on physically seeing
another individual, as the mirror neuron
hypothesis requires.
This kind of remote, empathic knowing
is the sort of ability that a survival-oriented
organism might develop, because this ability
favors the physical survival of the person in
need, and therefore procreation. This trait might
eventually be incorporated as part of our genetic
endowment and passed down through
succeeding generations. How might it actually
work?
A host of hypotheses have been
advanced to explain these happenings, all
proposing, in one way or another, new images
of the nature of consciousness, the nature of
time, or extensions of the unity that are possibly
foreshadowed in concept of nonlocality in
quantum mechanics. As I discuss in my recent
book The Power of Premonitions, these views
have been proposed by eminent scientists,
including Nobelists. No one knows which, if
any, of these hypotheses may eventually be
validated. But what is certain is that we have
vastly underestimated the extent of "the ties that
bind" us together through empathy, altruism,
and compassion, and which make us uniquely
human.

in popularity

Amidst the rich wood paneling and the
floral wallpaper at Chaska’s Peacock Inn, some
say a man sits quietly in a cream upholstered
chair on the landing of the stairs. And though
many pass by him each day, few notice his
presence. Kathy Machowski is one of those few.
That’s because the man is not one of the
living. He is a spirit and Machowski is a ghost
hunter.
Machowski said she has had encounters
with the paranormal since she was a little girl.
Back then she didn’t seek out the encounters,
but today, she is among a growing number of
people who do.
Machowski, who lives in Jordan, started
Minnesota’s Beyond the Veil to gather a group
of those who, like her, were interested in
delving deeper into the possibility of ghosts and
using equipment to investigate strange
occurrences in houses, churches, prisons,
hospital and other older buildings.
Buoyed by interest in television
programs like “Ghost Hunters” and
“Paranormal State,” Machowski said her group
is now busier than ever, fielding requests to
investigate possible paranormal activity and
lead ghost hunting classes.
They recently visited the Peacock Inn
and Carver’s Treasure Chest Antiques after
hearing that people at both businesses had been
witness to unexplained phenomena.
“Ghosts are real,” said Machowski. “A
lot of people co-exist with ghosts and don’t
even know it.”
Peacock Inn
Joyce Bohn has been well-aware of
strange happenings at her business for years.
Guests at the Peacock Inn, located in a
historic mansion off of City Square Park, have
told her about rocking chairs rocking empty and
cats jumping up on their beds in the middle of
the night when there are no cats in the house.
Flowers have fallen off of the wall for no good
reason. And silverware has repeatedly gone
missing at meals only to later be found back in
the drawer.
“I’m a pretty logical person,” said Bohn.
“But there are not logical explanations for
everything.”
This spring, Joyce offered to open up the
inn to Minnesota’s Beyond the Veil to see what
they could uncover.
Using standard ghost-hunting
equipment like cameras, tape recorders and
EMF (electromagnetic fluctuation) meters,
Machowski’s crew descended on the nearly
100-year-old building.
“I go in there expecting a ghost,” said
Machowski. “I expect to hear a ghost, see a
ghost. You have to expect the most and if you
get nothing, it’s not haunted.”
A typical session includes a walk
through of the building, identifying and
examining paranormal hot spots. “You’re
looking for things that shouldn’t be there,” said
Machowski.
That can include things like unexplained
levels of energy, random cold spots and
anomalies on photographs. But ghost hunters
also use their basic senses – listening for foot
steps or watching for mists and shadows.
“Anyone can ghost hunt,” she said. “All
you really need is a camera and a tape recorder.”
Machowski noted that there are several
places that are now opening their doors to
welcome ghost hunters. Bohn said she is
considering letting in classes provided her
“spirits” aren’t disturbed. Bohn would like to
keep her friendly spirits in good spirits.
“I’ve been to places where you get hit
with a ‘Get out!’ but here you get a welcome
feeling,” Machowski said, of the Peacock Inn.
Her group got a chance to experience some of
the activity Bohn and her guests have talked
about. While going through the inn, the ghost
hunters picked up some high EMF readings on
a bed in one of the guest rooms.
“Half of the bed had a high EMF and
half didn’t,” said Machowski, noting that spikes
can often be explained by electrical current, but
adding, “I couldn’t find an explanation for that.”
They captured some photographic
anomalies downstairs – several photos taken
during the investigation feature strange crescent
moon-like images in unexpected places.
“I’m not going to say it’s a ghost,” said
Machowski. “But it’s interesting.”
The most exciting part of their
investigation took place upstairs, Machowski
said, where they experienced an unexplained
thump as if something had dropped. They also
report picking up EVPs (electronic voice
phenomena) on their tape recorders with a
man’s voice telling them there were two spirits
in the room and a little girl’s voice saying “yes”
when asked if she liked the room.
Some of their findings didn’t make
sense until after the crew had left though.
During their investigation Kathy’s psychic in
the group said she picked up on a man named
Arthur who kept telling her that the Peacock Inn
was his house and that he greeted people. Later,
Bohn put two and two together as she took
down a photo in the foyer of the house’s
architect. His name was Arthur Klaussen.
“No one could have known that,” she
said.
After reviewing all of their evidence,
Machowski was able to come to a conclusion as
to whether the Peacock Inn was haunted.
“The spirits that are connected to the
house are good,” said Machowski. “They are
protecting it. So I wouldn’t say it’s haunted. I
would call it a spiritually protected house.” []

Early life
Sylvia Celeste Shoemaker was the
oldest of two daughters born to Bill Shoemaker
and Celeste Shoemaker in Kansas City,
Missouri on October 19, 1936. Bill Shoemaker
had many jobs including a mailman, jewelry
salesman and a vice president for a major
freight line. Browne’s maternal grandmother,
Ada Coil, also a self-proclaimed psychic
medium, was a devout Lutheran. Bill
Shoemaker was Jewish and Celeste Shoemaker
was an Episcopalian. In order to establish
stability, the family decided to convert to
Catholicism and they were all baptised together
when Browne was a young girl. Browne says
that her visions started appearing when she was
three-years-old and that her grandmother Ada
Coil helped her understand why she had them.
Browne also had a great-uncle who was a self
proclaimed psychic medium.
Browne taught English in a Catholic
School for seventeen years before working as a
psychic full-time.
Claims of psychic ability
In a 2001 interview with Larry King,
Browne stated that she is Jewish. Her stated
beliefs include the notion of spirit guides:
discarnate spirits who have previously lived
mortal lives and now watch over currently
living mortals. Communication from these
guides might manifest, for example, as the
"little voice in the head" telling a person to go
another way home from work to avoid danger,
or waking up a person in the middle of the night
with news that someone has died. Browne
professes the ability to speak with her spirit
guide, "Francine," and has given details of fifty-
four of her own former lives as divined by her.
She also claims to know what it is like in
Heaven. In her book Life On The Other Side,
she says the temperature is a constant 78
degrees Fahrenheit, that there are no insects
(unless one wants there to be), that pets go to
Heaven, and that one can build one's house
wherever one wants it to be unless it obscures
the view of a river or some trees, in which case
one needs permission. She asserts that the other
side exists approximately three feet above
ground level and at a "higher vibrational level"
and so is difficult for humans to perceive.
However, she claims to have been born, like
other psychics, able to perceive a wider range of
"vibrational frequencies".
Browne declares that she can see angels
and that they look similar to depictions in
paintings, but have different traits depending on
their "phylum". Her grand-daughter who is
purportedly psychic claims to have witnessed
the angels that Browne states come around
humans. She also once claimed on Montel to be
able to tell people the time and method of their
death, and will reveal it if a person wants to
know; she claims most people simply do not
want to know.
History as a psychic
Browne began performing psychic
readings since 1973 and has attracted a large
following. She has performed thousands of one-
on-one readings and with a wide variety of
groups and individuals. Her son, Chris also
claims to be a psychic and Browne's
grandmother made similar claims. Browne
claims to have provided information to police
departments and the FBI, however police
officers and family members say that in all 35
cases she worked on she played no useful role.
She also claimed she has advised former U.S.
presidents; but little evidence exists to support
these claims.

Browne has made many predictions of
varying accuracy, including that Bill Clinton
was falsely accused in the Lewinsky scandal
(proved incorrect), that Bill Bradley would win
the 2000 U.S. presidential election with the
Reform Party coming in second, the "hiding in
caves" of Osama bin Laden and Saddam
Hussein, the death of bin Laden (later reported
by the CIA as incorrect), a verdict of "not
guilty" in the Robert Blake case (later
established to be correct), and the appearance of
alien life on Earth by the year 2010. Browne
failed to predict the September 11, 2001 attacks
but after the fact claimed she had disturbing
dreams involving a lot of fire in the week
preceding the attack.
Browne has been quoted as saying,
"God only shows me what He needs to show
me. Sometimes bad things have to happen in
order for positive change to occur; or in order
for the ultimate plan to be achieved."
Most of her past predictions no longer
appear on her website, but can be found on
Internet archives such as the Wayback Machine.
Browne's predictions for the year 2000,
however, are still viewable directly on her site.
She acquired the surname Brown during the
third of her four marriages, and enhanced it with
a final e for her stage name.
Browne vs. Randi
James Randi has been a frequent critic
of Browne. On September 3, 2001 Browne
stated on Larry King Live that she would accept
the James Randi Educational Foundation's
(JREF) $1,000,000 challenge to demonstrate
supernatural abilities in a controlled scientific
test. However, as of 2006, Browne has failed to
contact the Foundation or respond to Randi's
enquiries.
Over subsequent years Browne has
since offered several reasons for her failure to
take part in the challenge:
•She does not need nor want the
money.•The money is tainted.
•Neither Randi or the JREF has
$1,000,000.
•The tests are rigged so no claimant can
possibly win.
In support of her final claim, Browne
often quotes Randi as saying that he'll never
have to pay the money because "I always have
an out". Randi, in turn, responds that this quote
is taken out of context and his actual words
were "I always have an out - I'm right", referring
to his belief that no one can win the challenge
because no one possesses any kind of
paranormal ability.
Randi also often mocks the logical
inconsistency of her statements that she is not
interested in the money, yet at the same time
requires proof of its existence. He also goes on
to point out that money is held by an
independent investment firm, Goldman Sachs,
and proof of its existence can be obtained by
requesting a copy of the most recent account
statement from the JREF, by telephone, fax,
letter, or e-mail. Though a few persons have

detailing her adventures. She is the head of the
Sylvia Browne Corporation, and the founder of
a church in Campbell, California known as the
Society of Novus Spiritus. According to its

employs forty ministers, and refers to itself as
"Gnostic Christian". It states that it follows the
same traditions and teachings which Jesus
himself followed, yet does not exclude
