the ill effects of excessive use of pesticides, insecticides in farming. He had also tried to
highlight how the MNCs are targeting even the small farmers in making them use its
products.
"We are holding workshops and are teaching at local schools in different areas about
climate change, pollution, deforestation and all other problems nature is facing. We also
try to find solutions and actions we can take to help and care for nature", said Om
Sunisa, who is a teacher and youth empowerment trainer. Sunisa, 33, teaches how to
design eco houses and village in Thailand and more than 600 students are working
under her stewardship.
We hope to continue to do so and bring awareness about our changing climate and the
importance of nature to children in Asia, said Om Sunisa. I found that after teaching
children in Thailand most of them got understood of global warming and climate change
and they felt strong need to plant trees and this is what we wanted elsewhere in Sri
Lanka, India, Bangladesh. We decided to also start the "1000 Trees Campaign" in which
we will plant 1000 trees with the children we have been teaching, she said.
When Tom meets Om
During one of his sojourns to Thailand while working for climate change and to get
training for eco village design education in February 2012, Tom Deiters happens to visit
the Wongsanit Ashram at Ongkhark village of Siam in Thailand, which is at about two
hour journey from Bangkok.
Om Sunisa was living there for about 7 years while teaching eco village design. Tom met
Om at the Ashram, actively involved in many community projects and known in Thailand
for simple living and for engaging in social action, spiritual practice. Both felt strong
connection for each other and started working together for climate change. Both said it
was like a spiritual meeting and we decided to take it for long. Tom said it Om made me
to meet many activists there in Thailand and we decided to spread awareness about
planting trees.
