A Promotion may be defined as an upward movement or advancement of an employee in the organization to another job, which commands better pay or wages, better status or prestige, and higher challenges, and responsibilities and better opportunities.
Better working environment, hours of work, facilities and location may accompany the change.
PURPOSE OF PROMOTION It is recognition of a job well done by an employee. It is a device to retain and reward an employee for his years of service to the company. It is to increase the employee and organizational effectiveness.
It is to promote job satisfaction on the part of the employee. It is to build loyalty, morale, and belongingness on the part of the employee.
It is to impress upon others that opportunities are available to them also in the organization if they perform well on their jobs.
Make a definite allocation of responsibility for selecting individuals for promotion at various job levels. Have overall co-ordination by some central agency. Announce the openings for promotion and invite the interested employees to apply within a specific period. Prepare the employee for promotion through provision of some type of training
Systematises promotions. Builds employee morale. Builds employee loyalty. Permits a more rational allocation of manpower, benefitting both the employer and the employee. Enables the company to retain the employees.
UPGRADING
Upgrading is used to connote a minor promotion or a promotion from within a grade.
