Nomenclature of Terminology

Print
The following terminology is used to describe belt conveyors and their components. Item Name / Term Used Angle of repose Angle of surcharge Head/drive/discharge pulley Material trajectory Tail pulley Snub pulley Take-up pulley Bend pulley Feed/loading chute Skirt plates Skirt rubber Impact idlers Impact bed Transition idlers Troughing/carrying idlers Troughing angle Return idlers Carrying-side/strand belt Return-side/strand belt Load stream Head/discharge chute Primary belt scraper Secondary belt scraper Return belt plough Take-up carriage Take-up trolley Belt splice Low speed coupling High speed coupling Reducer/gearbox Drive motor Baseplate Drive unit Torque arm Pulley bearings Bearing assemblies mounted on pulley shaft. Structural frame onto which drive motor, gearbox and coupling are mounted. Conveyor drive assembly incorporating motor, gearbox, high and low speed couplings, baseplate. Function / Description Angle to the horizontal which a freely formed pile makes when poured from above. Angle to the horizontal which a material assumes win at rest on a moving belt. To introduce power to the belt; material is discharged over this pulley. Arc scribed by material discharged over head pulley. Belt support. To increase belt angle of wrap around drive pulley. Mounted on sliding frame to maintain required tension in belt. Deflects belt around angles greater than 40 degrees. Contains feed material; centralises load on belt; imparts material velocity in direction of belt travel. Integral part of feed chute; contains material on belt while accelerating to belt speed. Adjustable wearing strips attached to skirt plate; seal between belt and skirt plate. Closely spaced idlers at load point; supports belt and absorbs impact. Continuous low-friction wearing strip at load point; supports belt and absorbs impact. Supports belt through transition from flat pulley to full idler trough angle. Supports loaded belt; maintains desired belt profile and required trough angle. Angle of wing idlers to horizontal viewed in cross-section through carrying side belt. Supports return belt; maintains desired belt profile. Upper or top belt profile which carries transported material. Lower or bottom belt profile, not usually loaded. Material in transit on carrying side of belt. Collects , contains and guides discharged material to downstream equipment. Contact scraper mounted across head pulley; removes product from belt. Contact scraper mounted after head pulley; removes residual product from belt. Contact scraper mounted before tail pulley on return belt; prevents material being caught between belt and pulley. Structural frame incorporating guides; retains and guides moving takeup assembly. Moving structural frame supporting take-up pulley; vertical or horizontal orientation. Method of joining two belt ends; hot or hold vulcanising or mechanical splice. Mechanical component connecting gearbox output shaft to pulley shaft. Mechanical /hydro-mechanical component connecting motor to gearbox input shaft. Torque converting device connecting drive motor to drive pulley.
