Bavaria brewery S.A. is the Colombias biggest brewery, one of the biggest of Latin America and the tenth worldwide. It was founded on April 4th 1889 by the German immigrant Leo S. Kopp under the name of Sociedad Kopps Deutsche Brauerei (Kopps German brewery society). Its products are well known not only along the whole country but also internationally. It has been recently acquired by the British multinational brewery company SABMiller.

Bavaria was founded by Leo Siegfried Kopp, a German with Jewish origins born in Offenbach, Germany in 1858. He moved to Colombia with his brother Emil in 1876. Here he knew his wife Mary Castello and his brothers in-law Santiago and Carlos Arturo whom he began a society called Kopp and Castello, Later in 1889 he acquired a small zone in the neighborhood San Diego of Bogota for building a beer factory. A year later the company changed its name to Bavaria Kopps Deutsche Bierbrauerei and adopted the eagle as its logo in 1891.

In order to get economic resources for beginning a new project in Colombia, Leo Kopp established a society with his brothers in-law Santiago and Carlos Castello called Kopp and Castello Society whose main economic activity was to trade, export and import goods. Ten years after establishing the society Kopp could gather enough money for acquiring a lot in the sector of San Diego in Bogota, there he began his own business, a brewery. A year later the society was dissolved and Kopp started up his factory under the name of Bavaria Kopps Deutsche Bierbrauerei.

Bavaria is a Colombian brewery founded in 1889by the German immigrant Leo S. Kopp. Is one of the most important companies in the country, given the fact that it is the second biggest brewery in South America and tenth worldwide. It has production plants along the country as well as in several countries such as Panama, Peru and Portugal. In 2005 the company was acquired by the British brewery SABMiller.
