Bill Thompson is running for mayor of New York City. His campaign document criticizes the current policy of stop and frisk, saying it requires police to treat young black and Latino men with suspicion based solely on their skin color. It references past incidents of unarmed black men being killed by police in New York and elsewhere. Thompson believes communities can be kept safe without residents feeling unsafe around police through community policing, after-school programs, anti-gang initiatives, and tougher gun laws, with police who listen to community concerns.

weve institutionalizeda policy that all but requires our police officers to treat young black and Latino men with suspicion, to stop and frisk them
BECAUSE OF THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN.

WE KNOW THE TRAYVON TRAGEDY HERE IN NEW YORK.
WEVE LIVED IT, over and over again, from Amadou Diallo to Patrick Dorismond to Ramarley Graham. And each time we hear of another innocent young black man killed, with our hearts torn open we hang our heads and pray, PLEASE LORD, NOT AGAIN. NOT AGAIN. that keeping communities safe from crime doesnt have to come at the expense of feeling unsafe around the police. We need REAL COMMUNITY POLICING, and more cops on the beat. We need to EXPAND AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS to keep kids on the right path. We need stronger anti-gang initiatives, tougher gun laws and POLICE THAT LISTEN TO COMMUNITY CONCERNS.
