Lesson Plan Character Development in To Kill a Mockingbird

Standards and Objectives: ELACC9-10RL1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. ELACC9-10RL3: Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme. Objectives: The student will: Demonstrate knowledge of character description and development by creating a Voki of an assigned character. Create a Twitter account for an assigned character to demonstrate understanding of character interaction, as well as how these interactions are significant to the plot.

Essential Question(s): How can figurative language and descriptive imagery help us to envision the appearance of the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird? How are character interactions significant to the plot of a story? What do these interactions reveal about the nature of the characters?

Strategies used: During Reading Activities Materials to be used: Laptops Instructional Plan: Time Allowed Specific Plan 1 10 mins Discuss plot events that occurred in Chapters 5-6 of To Kill a Mockingbird, as well as their significance. 2 15 mins Ask students to give descriptions of the main characters (Atticus, Jem, Scout, etc.) and provide specific quotes from the text that justify their opinion. Explain the importance of drawing inferences from the text.

Pass out rubric for Character Twitter and Voki assignment and allow students to get laptops. Explain to students that they will be completing this project over the next several days, and they should be able to point out specific quotes and page numbers to justify their description during the presentation.
