T o r o n t o , O N Novels set in the world of baseball have generally focused on leaving readers with a feel-good image of the world of America's favourite pastime. From Shoeless Joe to Bang the Drum Slowly, authors have typically favoured following the exploits of a cast of characters which, while slightly flawed, are generally likeable. But David Evans' new novel, The Arkansas Connection, turns that tradition on its head, creating an almost psychedelic baseball romp that is more akin to Irvine Welsh than W.P. Kinsella.

The Arkansas Connection is a fictional account of one of baseball's biggest 'heart-breaker' teams, the New York Mets. It's an almost nightmarish vision of the team and its management, with an equally scarybut fascinatingcast of characters.
Included in the team roster are an anesthesiologist-cum-right-fielder working where the proverbial lunatics are running the asylum, a mathematical genius whose investment advice to the dysfunctional team manager places the team in the realm of another classic, The Godfather. In his realization of a 'Bad News Bears on steroids' vision of the team, Evans has created a book deliberately designed to hold broad appeal. "My goal here wasn't necessarily to write a book about baseballeven though I enjoyed that elementbut to write about some absolutely fascinating and quirky characters that happen to exist in that world. It makes the characters far more relatable to non-baseball fans." David Evans' debut novel, published by Jemsdal Publishing, is available in a variety of e b o o k f o r m a t s .
