Product Overview The Solo T1 is a fully-featured, single data port DSU/CSU that connects routers and other data terminal equipment (DTE) to T1 and Fractional T1 networks. Featuring a softwareconfigurable DTE interface, the Solo T1 DSU/CSU provides an RS-449/EIA-530 or V.35 electrical interface. Bandwidth allocation, also software-configurable, allows you to configure the Solo T1 DSU/CSU for data rates from 56 Kbps up to a full T1 data rate of 1.536 Mbps. With support for industry standard Telnet and SNMP MIB II, the Solo T1 also features a device specific enterprise MIB, which enables configuration, monitoring, and control of all significant operating parameters. With Integrated Performance Monitoring (IPM), comprehensive end-to-end performance monitoring via standard RMON groups allows easier troubleshooting and improved network planning for frame relay networks.

Versatile Device Management Embedded SNMP Agent and External Management The Solo T1 DSU/CSU features an embedded Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) agent with the standard Management Information Base (MIB II). It also includes enterprise-wide manageability of network links and unit-specific parameters. You can easily integrate the device-specific enterprise MIB with popular SNMP management packages such as Digital Links WANviewTM Network Management System and HewlettPackards HP OpenView. The Solo T1 DSU/CSU supports RFC 1406, the latest T1 MIB. You can monitor and configure the Solo T1 DSU/CSU through an integral SLIP port, with an ASCII terminal, via a Telnet connection or a dial-up modem. You can also use the Digital Link Management Access Processor (MAP) for Ethernet connection with SLIP access to the Solo T1 DSU/CSU (see Figure 1). In-band Management over Frame Relay and Cisco HDLC protocol The in-band management capability gives you an easy way to manage your Solo T1 DSU/CSU network devices through the data path. You can manage the Solo T1 DSU/CSU by sending management packets through the router connected to the DTE port of the local Solo T1 DSU/CSU unit. You also can manage the remote unit in the same manner because the in-band connection allows you to use the payload portion of the T1 link. Support is available for in-band management over Frame Relay as well as the Cisco HDLC protocol. Using the in-band management feature, you dont need a SLIP connection between the network management station and the Solo T1 DSU/CSU. This eliminates the requirement for a serial cable and for configuring a SLIP port on the NMS station. The in-band management feature offers higher bandwidth for managing both the local and the remote Solo T1 DSU/CSU units. Non-disruptive Downloadable Software A downloadable software function allows you to easily upgrade the Solo T1 DSU/CSU without field visits or changing EPROMs or cards. This download utility supports both XMODEM protocol and Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP). The Solo T1 DSU/CSU stores two images of executable code. The download operation is separate from the switchover to new software, allowing the two operations to be performed at separate times. The unit can be programmed to initialize to new code at a specified time.

Advanced Diagnostic Capability The Solo T1 DSU/CSU offers an extensive suite of diagnostic capabilities for local and remote fault analysis. These include fixed test patterns (e.g., all 1s, all 0s, 1:1, 1:8, 3:24, and QRW) and two user-programmable 24-bit test patterns. The test patterns can be transmitted on the full T1 payload or on the fraction of the payload associated with the DTE port. In addition to front-panel LEDs and test jacks, the Solo T1 DSU/CSU features more than a dozen user-settable alarm parameters and performance thresholds for remote alarm reporting. The Solo T1 DSU/CSU reports these messages to the central site through direct serial connection, a modem connection, or through Digital Links in-band communications link. At the central site, you can display the alarm messages on a printer, terminal, or network management station. Remote Statistics Gathering Communications between the local and remote units using AT&T TR54016, ANSI T1.403, or Digital Link protocols is supported. This enables remote statistics to be gathered and displayed on the local units. Link-based testing and Delay monitoring Link-based testing allows non-intrusive testing of Frame Relay and HDLC networks using ICMP messages to any network addressable unit. In addition, delay monitoring measures and displays the average and maximum network delays experienced by test packets. These features allow network managers to test network links as well as quantify the network delay and are especially useful during network installation and trouble isolation. Frame Relay Performance Monitoring Integrated Performance Monitoring (IPM) provides an embedded probe function to monitor traffic at critical points in the network. Full-time, non-intrusive performance monitoring is available using four standards compliant RMON groups including statistics, history, alarms, and events. Operations can set alarm parameters as well as rising and falling performance thresholds on various frame relay related variables. The Solo T1 with IPM is compatible with NetScout ManagerTM which provides graphical performance statistics for WAN links. The operations manager can use these statistics to verify service level agreements, view trends, and plan capacity tailored to operational needs. In addition, you can monitor the bandwidth utilization to help configure and fine-tune the network (see Figure 2).
