12th Grade Honors English Course Outline: British Literature 2013-2014

Welcome to Mr. Prettymans 12th Honors British Literature class! This is a rigorous, fast-paced survey course that will be taught using a variety of instructional methods. Class reading, lecture, small group activities, debate, role playing, and large group discussions will all promote student achievement and a positive learning environment. Course Description 12th grade Honors British Literature is an upper level course that provides a textual and chronological survey through the past fifteen centuries of British Literature. This journey will include the introduction of numerous noteworthy authors, important literary movements, and various ways to analyze novels, short stores, drama, and poetry. Throughout the course of the year, cadets will learn to demonstrate proficiency through literary analysis, oral presentations, examination of text, and through persuasive and research-based essay writing. These skills and strategies will enable cadets to not only study British literature, but to re-live and experience the topics we discuss in a personal and profound way. I. TEXTS 1. Language of Literature: British Literature Anthology a. Anglo-Saxon/ Medieval Period: Beowulf, Selection from The Canterbury Tales b. The English Renaissance: Macbeth, select sonnets c. Romanticism: Poetry by Blake, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, Keats d. Victorian: Poetry by Browning, Hardy, Houseman e. Modernism: works by Yeats, Lawrence, Joyce, Eliot, Thomas, Churchill, Huxley 2. Twelfth Night by Shakespeare 3. 1984 by George Orwell 4. Vocabulary Workshop: Honors Level H II. SUPPLIES FOR 12th GRADE HONORS BRITISH LITERATURE It is expected that cadets will be prepared with all of the following materials each time we meet for this class by the third English class. 1. 1 (at the smallest) 3-Ring Binder This binder should be devoted to English class only * 4 divider tabs for binder - Starters - Notes - Handouts - Exit tickets 2. Looseleaf filler paper 3. 1 marble composition notebook 4. 2 different colored highlighters 5. 2 blue or black ink pens and a pencil (every class) 6. #2 pencil (at least 1) for ScanTron assessments

III. GRADING POLICY The English Department at DMA calculates grades (individually and for the marking period) by dividing points earned by points possible on all assignments, assessments, projects, papers, homework, etc. We do not determine grades using weighted percentages for different types of work. Each Marking Period is worth 20% of your final grade, while the midterm and final exam grades are each worth 10% of your final grade. The letter grades can be found in your DMA Handbook. Summative assessments will be a major determining factor in your Marking Period grade. IV. ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS- All students should be: * Ready - Prompt: Seated and ready after muster is called - Prepared: Paper, sharpened pencil, binder, textbook - Positive: participate often and take an active role in the classroom - Productive: use time wisely * Responsible - Make good choices - Read and follow directions * Respectful - Value and appreciate others work and ideas - Use appropriate language with peers and teachers V. BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS * Respect - Enter class silently, call attention on deck, be attentive as muster is called, and begin immediately working on starter warm-up - Be courteous when others are speaking * Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself * Make sure your desk and area around your desk are tidy when leaving the room. * Avoid bringing food or drink to class, with the exception of bottled water. * Be open-minded and tolerant in regard to others backgrounds, viewpoints, and differences. There is a zero tolerance policy for bullying. VI. MULTIMEDIA IN THE CLASSROOM This notice serves as a permission slip to allow your cadet to view PG-13 films in English class with recognized literary merit for the purposes of classroom instruction. Very few films will be shown throughout the course of the year, but the ones that are watched will thoroughly enrich classroom instruction and supplement the lesson we are currently covering. VII. TURN-IN POLICY: All work must be turned in the appropriate class box at the front table of the room. Homework from the previous night must be turned in at the very beginning of the next class. Homework that is completed during class time without permission will not be accepted. Late work will not be accepted, As a rule in the English Department, late work is not accepted. Senior year, THERE WILL BE NO MAKE UP DAY FOR CADETS. Most cadets are preparing for college and career life, and there are no make up days in college nor in the workplace. Accordingly, this new policy will give cadets a more realistic perspective on what is expected of them-- that ALL assignments are to be turned in ON TIME.

VIII. TURNITIN.COM Throughout the school year, cadets will be required to submit assignments electronically via Turnitin.com. More information on how to submit these assignments will be given to cadets at a later date. IX. ABSENCES Excused Absences: Cadets must make up work as soon as they return to school. It is the responsibility of the cadet to find out what was missed during the time of absences. If the absence is unexcused, the cadet will not be able to make up any missed work. This includes tests. In short, come to class!

X. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY All work that is assigned is to be done on an individual basis unless otherwise indicated by the instructor. Learning involves taking the time and effort to put forth ones best work. Any cadet caught plagiarizing, heating, or copying another cadets work will receive an F on the assignment and will require a parent-teacher conference regarding the matter. Incidents of academic dishonesty will be recorded in the cadets permanent file. This class will run on a foundation of honesty, integrity, and strong personal character.
