The Explorers Ted, Leon, and Leons little brother Kyle stood by the side of the road looking at the large, abandoned building in the distance. For two years they had tried to gather the strength and courage to go into the old Branson house on the hill. Like most of the kids at school, they believed the story about the redhatted bandits. Long before any of the boys were born, the towns sheriff had captured two men who had robbed several local banks. Because each of the men wore a ne red hat, it had been easy to nd them. It hadnt taken long for the judge to send them off for punishment. But no one had ever found the $500.00 in coins that had disappeared from First City Bank. This year, Ted, Leon, and Kyle planned to explore every inch of the house and the three sheds that stood just east of the back porch. They knew that if they made specic plans, drew maps, and marked every room, they would nd the coins. They were even ready to explore the famous Branson barn, a place that others were afraid to enter. Spanish Explorers After Christopher Columbuss voyages to the Americas, many Spaniards came to this continent to explore. One Spanish explorer was Ponce de Leon. He traveled through present-day Florida to nd the Fountain of Youth. A second explorer, Coronado, searched for the Seven Cities of Gold. He and his men traveled

for three years. They did not nd the cities of gold, but they did encounter the villages of the Pueblo who lived in the Southwest. They also saw the Grand Canyon. A third explorer was Hernando De Soto. De Soto traveled through Florida and then traveled west as far as the Mississippi River. He and

his men were the rst people from Spain to explore the Mississippi. These three men were only a few of the many European people who explored the Americas.
