He was guillotined in 1793. Louise was born at Versailles on 23rd August 1754. In 1770, he married Marie Antoinette, daughter of the emperor and empress of Austria. In 1774, Louis succeeded his grandfather Louis XV as king of France. Louis initially supported attempts by his minister Jacques Turgot and later Jacques Necker to relieve Frances financial problems. Frenchs support for the colonists in the American War of Independence had brought the country to the verge of bankruptcy. Meanwhile, accusation of frivolity, extravagance and scandalous behavior against the queen, Marie Antoinette, further discredited the monarchy. In 1789, to avert the deepening crisis, Louis agreed to summon the Estates-General (a form of parliament, but without real power) in order to try and raise taxes. This was the first time the body had met since 1614. Angered by Louis refusal to allow the three Estates the First (clergy), Second (nobles), and Thirds (commons) to meet simultaneously, the Third Estates proclaimed itself a National Assembly, declaring that only it had the right to represent the nation. Rumours that the king intended to suppress the assembly provoked the storming of the Bastille prison, a symbol of repressive royal power, on 14 th July 1798. In October, Louis and his family were force by the mob to return to Paris from their palace at Versailles. In June 1791, they attempted to escape, which was considered proof of Louis treasonable dealings with foreign powers. He was forced to accept a new constitution, thereby establishing a constitutional monarchy. Nonetheless, against the background of military defeat by Austria and Prussia, the revolutionary leadership was becoming increasingly radicalized. In September 1792, the new National Convention abolished the monarchy and declared France a republic. Louis was found guilty of treason and executed at the guillotine on 21st January 1793. Marie Antoinette was executed nine months later. 30. The text is about . . . .

Mangrove Trees A mangrove is a tropical marine tree or shrub of the genus Rhizhopora. Mangroves have special aerial roots and self-filtering tap roots that enable them to thrive in brackish water (brackish water is salty as sea water). There are several species of mangrove trees found all over the world. Some prefer more salinity, while others like to be very close to a large fresh water source (such as a river). Some prefer areas that are sheltered from waves. Some species have their roots covered with sea water every day during high tide. Other species grow on dry land, but are still part of the ecosystem. Mangrove need to keep their trunk and leaves above the surface of the water. Yet they also need to be firmly attached to the ground so they are not moved by waves. There are three types of mangrove roots that play an important role for it: 1. Support roots which directly pierce the soil 2. Level-growing roots which twist upwards and downwards, with the upward twists emerging on the water surface. 3. Level-growing roots whose downward twist (sub-roots) appear on the water surface.
