Orientation For Freshmen and Transferees: University of Batangas
As the new school year begins, a number of fresh faces and fresh minds were
added to the UB family. To welcome them in the university – their second home, the
Guidance Counseling Office with the help of the student volunteers from Society of
Peer Facilitators, Organization of Psychology Students, Student Assistants, Student
Government and Westernian Advocate once again conducted an orientation for
freshmen and transferees last June 9 and 10, 2009 at the Auditorium from 8:00 am to
12:00 nn. The orientation activity is a bi-annual event designed exclusively for new
comers and it aims to familiarize the students with the surroundings, conditions, rules
and regulations, and the services of the university.
The first day was intended for the students from the College of Education,
College of Business and Accountancy, College of Tourism and Hospitality Management
and Technical Education Department whereas the second day was scheduled for the
students from the College of Allied Medical Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences,
College of Engineering and College of Nursing and Midwifery.

The first part of the program was an amazing race activity focusing on the 12
different departments and offices – Dean’s Office (CAMS, CAS, CBA, Education, CTHM,
Nursing, Tech. Ed., Engineering), Registrar’s Office, Accounting Office, Guidance
Office, Cashier’s Office, Clinic, Security Office, OJT Office, Property, LRC,
Maintenance and SAEP - of the university which the students should be aware of.
Stations were plotted near the original location of the offices/departments.
After the amazing race activity, the program was continued at the Auditorium
where Dr. Abegayle Perez-Chua, VPAA; Dr. Hernando B. Perez, University President and
Atty. Jesus V. Mayo welcomed the freshmen and transferees. Discussions about the
University of Batangas itself from the mission, vision and philosophy of the school
down to the general rules and regulations were also given to the students. Also, for
the information of all it was announced that starting this school year, students
studying in this university will no longer be called “Ubinian.” Instead, they will be
called “Brahmans.” Awards, tokens and prizes from the Office of the VPSEA and
Corporate Communications Office were given to students who actively participated in
the orientation program. The Nursing Department also gave timely and relevant
information about the Influenza A (H1N1) virus, how to keep ourselves safe and to
prevent the virus from spreading.
Before the orientation program ended, an evaluation was given. The students
evaluated the activity using the following scales: 5 – Excellent, 4 – Very Good,
3 – Good, 2 – Fair and 1 – Needs Improvement. The summary of evaluation for the
activity was presented as follows.
This is the second time that the amazing race activity was done and it was again
appreciated by the participants since they learn and had fun at the same time. It
contributed a lot to their learning and familiarization of the school’s surroundings.
Another orientation similar to this one is recommended.
