Preface

This Test Bank is designed to accompany the sixth edition of Probability and Statistics for Engineering and the Sciences by Jay L. Devore. Throughout this Test Bank, I have attempted to provide a good mix of difficulty level versus question type. In its entirety, this Test Bank contains 430 fill-in-the blank questions, 430 multiple-choice questions, and 290 applied and computational questions, for a total of 1150 questions. If you have any comments, corrections, or suggestions, please communicate with me via e-mail at Elsaidim@ferris.edu. In producing statistics exams, I try to satisfy several goals. These are: 1. Clearly differentiate between students of different ability. 2. Test several different aspects of the material covered. 3. Require no memorization. 4. Make it easy to mark. With these goals in mind, this Test Bank is organized by section within each chapter and to some extent by the type of technique or concept. For each chapter, there are numerous fillin-the-blank questions, multiple-choice questions, and applied and computational questions followed immediately by the answers. Some of the questions are fairly straightforward, primarily requiring students to demonstrate their ability to perform various types of computations. Other questions describe an experiment or research study and require students to recognize and apply the appropriate statistical technique. I usually assume that students will be supplied with statistical tables and are allowed to bring in a formula sheet containing any information they choose to include. I usually allow one eight-and-a-half by eleven inches two-sided formula sheet for each exam. My daughters Abby, Lily, Heidi, and Jessica deserve more than thanks for their patience during the preparation of this Test Bank. I extend my deepest regards to my parents Ahmed and Zenuib, my brothers Naguib and Emad, and my sister Laila in Egypt, and to my brother Gamal in US, for their continual love, encouragement and support. Many thanks are due to a very special friend, Margaret T. Morrow, for her help in typing this Test Bank. Last, but certainly not least, I am grateful to Ann Day, Assistant Editor of Duxbury, for her patience, assistance, and great help and cooperation in the preparation of this edition of the test bank.
