8.2.2 Although most elements are found in combinations on Earth, some elements are found uncombined 2.

1 Explain the relationship between the reactivity of an element and the likelihood of its existing as an uncombined element.

The more reactive an element is, the less chance there is of finding it in Earth as an uncombined
element.

2.2 Classify elements as metals, non- metal and semi-metals according to their physical properties Metals Shiny High electrical conductivity High heat conductivity High strength Highly malleable and ductile Semi-metals Low sheen Semi-conductor High heat conductivity Variable strength Moderately malleable and ductile Non-metals Dull Electrical insulators Thermal insulators Low strength Brittle

Noble gases , most unreactive elements, exist as single atom molecules Also Au, Ag and Pt, are native metals exist uncombined.

2.3 Account for the uses of metals and non-metals in terms of their physical properties Element Copper Iron Zinc Gold Carbon (graphite) Uses Electrical wiring Structural building materials Galvanising of iron Ornaments Jewellery Lead pencils and lubricant Electrode in batteries Jewellery Properties related to use Ductile High electrical conductivity High tensile strength High reactivity so it can corrode to protect iron Lustre Not reactive Softness and layer structure Conducts electricity Transparent High refractive index and strength Unreactive dont corrode Light weight and dont corrode
