Attrition: the ugly word
Understanding online attrition and retention is a critical factor since online student retention has been suggested as one of the greatest weaknesses in online education. Attrition from an online course is approximately 50% of those enrolled nationwide (Palloff and Pratt, 2003). Attrition rates are estimated to be 20-50% higher in online courses than in traditional courses (Diaz, 2009).
