A history of the 126th Regiment of New York State Volunteers in the American Civil War, with biographies of soldiers and officers, and a chronology of the regiments involvement. Very good. No jacket. 3. [Ancient History] Gibbon, Edward; Bury, J.B.; Guedalla, Philip The History of the Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire, in Seven Volumes The Limited Editions Club, 1946. Includes original slipcase. Complete in seven hardcover volumes. Black leather spines, marbled paper over boards, red page ridges. Edited by J.B. Bury with the (extensive) notes by Mr. Gibbon, the introduction and index as prepared by Professor Bury, and a letter to the reader from Philip Guedalla. Illustrations rom etchings by Gian Battista Piranesi throughout. Maps on endpapers. Originally published in six volumes, this work stands as a major literary achievement of the 18th century, and was adopted as a model for the methodologies of modern historians. Gibbon is often called the first modern historian of Ancient Rome. Very good. No jackets. Spine edges rubbed, two seams of slipcase beginning to split but still holding firmly. An extensive history based on excavations Schliemann conducted at Hissarlik, which is now presumed to be the site of Troy. Schliemanns work lent credence to his belief that the classic epic poems of Homer and Virgil were based on historical events. The text recounts findings that indicate the presence of seven separate cities on the excavation site, and is illustrated with numerous wood engravings. The appendices, containing numerous essays related to Schliemanns research, and the index, are both enormous, together representing nearly one quarter of the text. Very good. No jacket. One of two binding variants printed by Scribners in 1910, this often referred to as the Subscribers Edition, and containing illustrations not found in the first trade edition (over 200, from photographs by Kermit Roosevelt and drawings by Philip R. Ella was Newells only daughter by his first wife. Searles writings feature excerpts from her fathers writing, including a poem he wrote for Ella. She includes information about the sources from which the writings were taken, as well (e.g., Lines written by my father to Mr. E.F. Chase of Rochester on his 55th Birthday, January, 1887). George H. Newell was the first commodore of the Rochester Yacht Club, and captain of the yacht Ripple. This volume recounts numerous voyages the Ripple took on Lake Ontario in journal-style entries. Near fine. First edition. 378 pp. One of the later works by the author of Call of the Wild, The Iron Heel, The Sea-Wolf, and many others. A nautical novel in which the crew of a ship is divided in loyalty between the two senior mates after the death of the captain. Londons belief in the superiority of the white race features prominently in the tone of the narrative. Very good. Lacks jacket. Boards rubbed, ink stamps to endpapers, pages lightly toned. $45

Large 8vo. Complete in ten volumes, printed on laid paper in a limitation of 1000 copies. The first work to be released by the Shakespeare Head Press, a fine press in Shakespeares hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon which undertook to carry on the sort of printing that the Kelmscott Press made famous. The only complete set of his works to be produced in his hometown, and is often called The Stratford Town Shakespeare. This set was reproduced by Duffield & Company of New York in another limitation of 1000, which is the set offered here. Very good. No jackets. Spine labels toned with loss from two volumes, boards of a couple volumes lightly soiled. Descriptive label tipped in on front endpaper of first volume. $950 32. A short story collection by the Pulitzer Prize winning author best known for The Age of Innocence and Ethan Frome. Very good. Includes original jacket. A program of a cavalry circus put on by the Geneseo National Guard Troop I, published ca. 1940. Includes lists of names of those involved and ads for businesses. Very good. (Editor); [Mayhew, Henry] The Religious, Social, and Political History of the Mormons, or Latter-Day Saints, from Their Origin to the Present Time; Containing Full Statements of Their Doctrines, Government and Condition, and Memoirs of Their Founder, Joseph Smith. First edition. viii, 460 pp. An early complete history of Mormonism, from the birth of Joseph Smith to the time of publication, detailing the development of the sect despite persecution and internal disagreements, the succession of Brigham Young upon Joseph Smiths death, and the subsequent journey to Utah. Also includes a current state of affairs with descriptions of core beliefs. Mentioned in Sabin 85145 but not separately cataloged. Very good. No jacket. Part of the American Reformers series, edited by Carlos Martyn. Good. No jacket. Boards rubbed, binding repaired. $40 40. [Rochester School for the Deaf] Adams, E.P.; [Hugo, Victor]; Bell, Mabel Gardiner Story-Sermons from Les Miserables Western New York Institution for Deaf Mutes, Rochester, NY, 1895. 152 pp. The preface explains that after Rev. Adams adapted these stories from Victor Hugos Les Miserables, his daughter Sarah Taylor Adams repeated them to her classmates in the Rochester (N.Y.) school for the deaf. This ultimately led to the publication of this volume, spearheaded by the schools superintendent, Mrs. Westervelt. The work also includes Sarah Adamss illustrations. Sadly, neither Mrs. Westervelt nor Sarah Adams survived to see the books publication, but another copy of this book, which we donated after learning the works history, is now held in the collection of the Rochester School for the Deaf.
