3. [Ancient History] Gibbon, Edward; Bury, J.B.; Guedalla, Philip The History of the Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire, in Seven Volumes The Limited Editions Club, 1946. Includes original slipcase. Complete in seven hardcover volumes. Black leather spines, marbled paper over boards, red page ridges. Edited by J.B. Bury with the (extensive) notes by Mr. Gibbon, the introduction and index as prepared by Professor Bury, and a letter to the reader from Philip Guedalla. Illustrations rom etchings by Gian Battista Piranesi throughout. Maps on endpapers. Originally published in six volumes, this work stands as a major literary achievement of the 18th century, and was adopted as a model for the methodologies of modern historians. Gibbon is often called the first modern historian of Ancient Rome. Very good. No jackets. Spine edges rubbed, two seams of slipcase beginning to split but still holding firmly. Schliemanns work lent credence to his belief that the classic epic poems of Homer and Virgil were based on historical events. The text recounts findings that indicate the presence of seven separate cities on the excavation site, and is illustrated with numerous wood engravings. The appendices, containing numerous essays related to Schliemanns research, and the index, are both enormous, together representing nearly one quarter of the text. Very good. No jacket. Large 8vo. Complete in ten volumes, printed on laid paper in a limitation of 1000 copies. The first work to be released by the Shakespeare Head Press, a fine press in Shakespeares hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon which undertook to carry on the sort of printing that the Kelmscott Press made famous. The only complete set of his works to be produced in his hometown, and is often called The Stratford Town Shakespeare. This set was reproduced by Duffield & Company of New York in another limitation of 1000, which is the set offered here. Very good. No jackets. [Rochester School for the Deaf] Adams, E.P.; [Hugo, Victor]; Bell, Mabel Gardiner Story-Sermons from Les Miserables Western New York Institution for Deaf Mutes, Rochester, NY, 1895. 152 pp. The preface explains that after Rev. Adams adapted these stories from Victor Hugos Les Miserables, his daughter Sarah Taylor Adams repeated them to her classmates in the Rochester (N.Y.) school for the deaf. This ultimately led to the publication of this volume, spearheaded by the schools superintendent, Mrs. Westervelt. The work also includes Sarah Adamss illustrations. Sadly, neither Mrs. Westervelt nor Sarah Adams survived to see the books publication, but another copy of this book, which we donated after learning the works history, is now held in the collection of the Rochester School for the Deaf.
